Sony Vegas Pro 9 Review

Sony Vegas Pro 9
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The product description above goes a LONG way into describing Vegas Pro 9's capabilities here, so I won't reiterate these ad nauseum.
However, if you're new to the field, is Vegas Pro 9 for you? If you're looking for the perfect, non-linear editor, and are seriously considering producing multiple DVD's as a business line (say you're a wedding videographer, etc.), then I'd respond with a resounding YES. If you're tired of being faced with restrictions of cheaper offerings (i.e. limited menu lengths, constrained templates, etc.) or if you're frustrated with compatibility limitations (only certain video files are supported, you need something that will read AVCHD video files), then here's another resounding YES. If you're looking into software that gives you full range in creativity, then another resounding YES.
If you're looking for software that simply takes your home movie and plops it onto a DVD with minimal rework, look elsewhere. I, however, use it almost exclusively for home movie use, BUT I edit my home movies heavily and create my own music videos which requires that I often look/listen to them on a frame-by-frame basis, so I appreciate the full range of power that is at my disposal.
I have been using Sony Vegas Pro 8 for quite awhile (you can see my full review on this site), so some of the Pro 8 users may wonder if it's worth the upgrade or not. Here are some points to consider that Pro 9 supports that Pro 8 does not:
* 4K images. 4000+ x 4000+ images are now fully supported for rendering. While some may be entranced by this, I had no use for this whatsoever.
* Lighting effects. Sony Vegas Pro 9 offers Glint, Rays, etc. I love these and I use them quite frequently to offer some additional punch on my title screen sequences.
* Fill Light. This feature alone was worth it for me in the purchase of an upgrade. Do you ever have a shot where there's a bright light source that tends to drown out the rest of your footage (that you want!) in shadows because of the differential exposure? Fill Light will brighten those dark images and leave the brighter portions of the frame alone!! This was highly, highly worth it to me since this type of exposure compensation is usually not available on commercially available camcorders.
Overall, Sony Vegas Pro 9 (which has BOTH 32-bit and 64-bit versions on the same disc) operates just as cleanly as its older brother Pro 8. If anything, it appears to operate even more smoothly and some of the buggy portions of the ProTitler appear to have been fully corrected at the time of this review.
I highly recommend this product. Happy editing!

Corel DVD MovieFactory 6.0 Plus Review

Corel DVD MovieFactory 6.0 Plus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this product for a month on the recommendations of a video forum group. It was for the specific purpose of burning HD-DVD compliant videos onto standard 4.7GB DVD's using a standard DVD burner.
The biggest problem with this product is that importing files take a long, long, long time. Whether you choose your desired file from a dialog box, or drag and drop it onto the open Ulead DVD Movie Factory window, the program basically locks your computer up for the next hour. Note that this is BEFORE you do anything with the file.
It's not just with high definition videos either. Standard definition files also take a long time to load.
Technical support from the Corel website is basically non-existent save for some FAQ's and a users forum. Even if you click on the so-called "Technical Support" link it takes you directly to the FAQ's. You can't even get email support. I at least got that with Microsoft.
Looking through those forums I realize that others who use this product with Windows Vista have the same issues. The label on the box says "Works with Windows Vista", just not how well.
Hopefully I'll have better luck with Nero.

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Version 11 Review

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Version 11
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a studio user since version 9. I have upgraded each time and have continually been searching for one of the programs that will convert my video for use with Flash. Magix I tried (see my review there). When Studio 11 touted it would convert to Flash, I was happy. I promptly ordered.
Initially, I could not even make a video. It would lock up on the rendering process. They recently released an upgrade (if you purchase, ensure you download all the upgrades before trying to use) which finally allowed me to complete a video.
When I went to save my movie as a Flash file, I found, once again, that you have to upload it to a website. Pinnacle offers such a site "free of charge." However, READ THE FINE PRINT before you join.
If you upload videos to their website you are granting them free, unrestricted use of your video without compensation to you. If you don't mind that they may use a family reunion video in something they do, etc, then knock yourself out. However, by law anyone who creates something owns it. If I shoot a video of my pets and then edit it with titles, etc, it is my intellectual property. Nobody is allowed to take my work and claim it as their own or use it for their purposes without my permission. To get that permission, you may need to pay a fee. Pinnacle is offering you a place to post your videos online as compensation I guess. If you sign up for an account, you are granting them use of your property and work with no further contact from you. You don't even get to state if you accept the manner in which they intend to use it.
I opted to decline that even though I am still searching for a way to convert to flash files. Guess I will have to learn how to use flash.
As far as other aspects of editing, it works fantastically. Unfortunately, if you are upgrading from Studio 10 and earlier and have purchased SmartSounds tracks, they won't work in Studio 11. You will lose access to all of those audio enhancements with the upgrade. This was not mentioned in the upgrading either. They do mention an audio track component but DO NOT state that SmartSound no longer is usable.
The three star rating would be higher except they don't state up front that the only way to convert to Flash is by uploading to a website and don't say that SmartSound is no longer used and not compatible. I have purchased over 20 discs from SmartSound and now they are useless and ended up being a waste of money with the upgrade. Scorefitter is the new audio track software integrated with Studio and the selection is pathetically small with no upgrades available.
Also, if you are not familiar with Studio, bear in mind a limited menu and such are available with the program you purchase. Additional menus, etc are available for extra money and can cost several hundred dollars more the get them all if you wish for a variety.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Review

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have worked with Final Cut, Avid, Sony Vegas, and if you want to get old school Media 100 in addition to cut and splice. I used to work with Premiere a while back and found the software too unstable. Having a PC I was unable to switch to Final Cut or the money to upgrade to Avid so I went with Vegas. Vegas is a much more stable program but has a bit of a different interface (the main editing arrangement between the other programs are very simular). I was happy with Vegas, and it companion DVD program is set up quite nicely (very user friendly while still allowing advance users the power to make animated menues).
However I have gotten into DSLR HD recording and I did not like the process of rerendering the native files so they can be used in my editing programs, so when Premiere Pro was released it caught my eye. Having used it for a week heres my 1st impressions.
Once you learn all the functions it will be a great tool but a lot of the advanced features are not user friendly (it will take some learning). My Canon 7D files operate great in the timeline and I like the import and export engine a lot. I do have a fairly new computer (an i5 processor with 8GB of Ram). I do not like the transitions and dissolves on Premiere. Vegas cross fades automatically so Premiere takes me a bit longer to set up the edit. I will try and find if there is a preset that will allow a default cross fade in the options menues later.
I like the auto import to Encore, the DVD authoring program. However Encore is very technical to use, not user friendly at all. To even build a basic menue will be a learning curve. I tend to concentrate on the editing and not the DVD creation as much so I like the "idiot" version of disc making. When I have time I will read and learn more.
I have used and like Adobe Story (I generally write in Final Draft). Story is rather simple, but I am gearing up for a production in the next month so I am eager to explore some on the advance functions in this program. I think it has a lot of potential to be a great tool (as far as script breakdown). I like the online sharing component to this program too. Very useful to just send a link instead of the entire document to my readers.
I have not had a chance to take a look at On Location. I don't have a laptop or a computer on my production, so I am guessing on location may not have an impact on my workflow although I am definately curious about the metadata workflow from script to Premiere. I might try a few clips just for fun.
In the end after a week of working on Premiere I definately think it will be a great worktool. I have not had the stability issues I have had in the past and it makes working with DSLR footage way easier. If you are looking for great books to help you get the basics of the adobe products down I would reccomend the classroom in a book series. Although expensive they are definately the best laid out training tools I have used in the past (Premiere Pro's will not be released until the end of July).
For whatever it's worth I would reccomend it to people that are getting into DSLR shooting (maybe Red too, I have not work with that format on this program yet). If I had my choice I would of course choose Avid first, Final Cut 2nd, and Premiere 3rd. But the 1st two are a lot more expensive and do not work with the REd or DSLR footage natively (yet) so my choice was easy.
UPDATE 8-25-10
I have edited a short that screened in the Sacramento Film Festival (on a big screen) last month with Premiere. I have become a fan of soundbooth for basic audio needs. I had to replace almost 85% of the short film's audio. Soundbooth was great improving all the sound elements and removing noise. For the basics it was very effective.
I absoluetly love the export engine in Premiere Pro. The ease of choosing a default export depending on what it's used for is great (especially exporting HD files to upload to youtube!). Also the set up screen for new projects is well designed. I do not have any stability issues what so ever and I am importing native 7d files shot in full HD 1080p at 24fps. There is a small load time if you are handling a lot of footage, but once it loads everything flows smoothly.
Encore (DVD authoring software) is still a mystery to me in terms of setting up advance menues. I'll admit that I have not spent hardly any time trying to learn the program. The auto import directly from Premiere will set up an autoplay DVD (no menues) and I have been living with that. The blueray version of my short I submitted for the film festival I used the Sony Vegas program's blue ray authoring program and just exported a HD version of the film from premiere. The results were very good. Projected on the big screen the quality did stand out from the 480 entries most definately.
All in all everything is going great. I plan to get in depth with After Effects in the coming months preparing for my next short.

Top new features of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5
Industry-leading performance with the Mercury Playback Engine The ability to edit HD and higher resolution footage in real time without having to first render it or lower its resolution by transcoding or rewrapping it with an intermediate codec is a post-production dream come true. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 brings that dream to the desktop with the revolutionary Mercury Playback Engine.
The Mercury Playback Engine provides native 64-bit, GPU-accelerated support for Mac and Windows, yielding dramatic improvements in performance and stability. You can open projects faster, scrub through HD and higher resolution projects fluidly, and handle long-form content and effects-heavy sequences more reliably. Play through most common transitions and effects without waiting for rendering. Plus, you can usually see results instantly when performing tasks such as keying with the new Ultra keyer, applying Gaussian blurs and blend modes to footage, applying multiple color corrections, and working with numerous other effects. The Mercury Playback Engine also makes rendering for final output much faster than before.
The Mercury Playback Engine works hand in hand with NVIDIA CUDA technology that leverages the parallel compute engine in NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs) to solve many complex computational problems in a fraction of the time a CPU would take to perform the same task.
In addition, the Mercury Playback Engine takes multitasking to a new level. Utilizing the GPU to accelerate effects, rendering, and other processor-intensive tasks frees your system's CPUs to handle background tasks. The enhanced, native 64-bit system architecture in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 lets you use all available system RAM (up to 128GB in today's computers), so you can run multiple software applications at the same time. This opens the door to powerful timesaving, multitasking workflows. For example, you can simultaneously edit a very complex, effects-laden project in Adobe Premiere Pro while your system's CPUs render an elaborate After Effects composition in the background.
If you're working on a computer or laptop that is unable to play back challenging footage such as 4K RED files or sequences with extensive effects, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 includes the ability to adjust the playback resolution of your video in the Source Monitor or Program Monitor. Separate Playback and Pause resolutions give you more control over monitoring--with higher resolution footage such as 4K, you can set playback resolution to a lower value for smooth performance (for example 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, or 1/16 resolution), and set Pause resolution to Full. This allows you to quickly check the quality of focus or edge details when playback is paused--useful for when you don't have the luxury of an on-set HD monitor.
Expanded native tapeless workflows Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 builds upon the industry's best native tapeless workflow by offering new native format support for Sony XDCAM HD 50, Panasonic AVCCAM, DPX, and AVC-Intra. Native support for RED R3D files has been enhanced, and native support for video shot with Canon, Nikon, and other DSLR cameras added. These newly supported formats expand existing support for variants of Panasonic P2; Sony XDCAM, XDCAM EX, and XDCAM HD; HDV; and AVCHD.
Open workflows with Apple Final Cut Pro and Avid editing software Whether working solo or in a workgroup that's involved in a large multistudio production, industry professionals typically use a variety of production and post-production tools on virtually every project. Moving media and sequences between tools in complex production pipelines often requires format conversion, specialized plug-ins, tedious workarounds, or a lot of manual work to recreate elements that don't transfer. The ability to share projects and assets between Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro, as well as between Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid NLEs such as Media Composer, means you can share files and timelines without conversion or rendering, preserving commonly used effects and transition.
Faster editing with metadata Metadata plays an essential role in helping efficiently manage and locate media assets throughout the production process. It lets you automatically track crucial details such as where a clip was shot, who's in it, and whether you have the rights to use it in your project. Innovative new metadata features enable the new script-to-screen workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro, bringing new efficiencies to the editing and production process.
Metadata can be created automatically and supplemented manually at any stage of production. For example, at the start of your project, a script written with Adobe Story, a new CS Live online service*, captures vital information and stores it as metadata that can be imported into OnLocation. While you're recording footage directly to disk, OnLocation automatically captures all of the important metadata coming from the camera. Comments you make in the OnLocation Shot List are also stored with each clip as metadata. When clips are imported into Adobe Premiere Pro and other components of CS5 Production Premium, metadata is retained in each application.
During post-production, metadata streamlines searching for clips while you edit. With metadata, you can quickly locate media assets and clips by filename, date, time, camera setting (such as resolution or frame rate), shot location, or any information you've added to your asset or clip. And when you run Speech Search in Adobe Premiere Pro, you can transcribe spoken dialogue that is converted into metadata, making locating particular footage simple.
Cutting-edge storytelling with new Adobe Story (available separately) Adobe Story, a new CS Live online service* for scriptwriting, can help accelerate the process of turning screenplays into finished media. Available separately from Production Premium, the tight integration of Adobe Story with CS5 Production Premium extends the benefits of Adobe Story into broader parts of the production and post-production workflow.
Integration with CS Review Clients, project managers, and members of production teams don't always work in the same location, in the same city, or even in the same country. CS Review, a new CS Live online service*, provides a fast and simple way for teammates and clients to take part in reviewing video sequences, using just a web browser and easy-to-use annotation tools.
Thanks to its integration with Adobe Premiere Pro, unlike other services that offer online review of creative content, CS Review lets you publish a review to the web directly from within Adobe Premiere Pro. Encode sequences in the background and automatically upload them for review and collaboration. When comments are made by colleagues and clients viewing the content in a web browser, comments are dynamically captured and displayed directly in the new Review panel in Adobe Premiere Pro alongside the sequence they relate to. Jump directly to comments in the timeline to efficiently match feedback to specific elements and keep track of review comments in one location.
Because reviews are accessed simply through a web browser, CS Review brings your teammates and clients into the review process in near-real time. When you need to view or archive reviews offline, they can be easily saved as JPG or FLV files.
With CS Review, you can apply password protection to your content, and assign roles to determine who can create a new review, make and respond to comments, or just read comments. The ability to set deadlines, track reviewer participation, and view comments as they are posted help you further manage the review process.
Efficient production and tapeless camera support in Adobe OnLocation CS5 Adobe OnLocation CS5 provides an impressive array of production tools to help you shoot better and faster while saving time and money, both on set and off. New support for tapeless cameras extend the ways you can use OnLocation in your production workflows.
Spot problems in imported tapeless footage. Thanks to new tapeless camera support, you can use the comprehensive software waveform monitor and vectorscope as well as the audio spectrum analyzer in OnLocation to identify image and audio problems in imported files by quickly scanning your footage for audio pops, clipping, and video overbrights.
Streamlined encoding with revamped Adobe Media Encoder With the explosive growth of video on the Internet, there's been a massive shift in how people consume video entertainment. Whether you produce instructional videos, trailers for your independently produced films, or music videos for viewing online or on iPods, distribute your work on YouTube, Vimeo, or Hulu, or output it to broadcast playout servers, being able to efficiently deliver your content in a variety of formats is crucial. Adobe Media Encoder, a separate, 64-bit software application included with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, saves you time by streamlining the process of creating multiple encoded versions of your source files and Adobe Premiere Pro sequences. Adobe Media Encoder features a more intuitive user interface, providing more visual feedback to help you work faster. Save time with the new ability to start the encoding process directly from Adobe Premiere Pro without going to the batch list. Set up multiple items for batch encoding, manage priorities, and control advanced settings for each item individually. Batch encoding lets you use any combination of sequences and clips as sources and encode to a wide variety of video formats, including FLV, F4V, Windows Media, QuickTime, and other popular codecs such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and--new in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5--AVC-Intra and DPX.
Searchable web DVDs and other enhancements in Adobe Encore CS5 Adobe Encore CS5 software is a versatile, interactive authoring tool for video distribution that allows you to deliver your projects beyond DVD and Blu-ray Disc. In a single operation, you can easily turn your DVD and Blu-ray Disc projects into web DVDs that now include a search interface. The new interface gives viewers a more engaging experience by enabling them to search within a web DVD using keywords. During authoring, Encore automatically creates a search database using metadata from speech-analysis text, subtitles in timelines and slideshows, and menu and button names.

Vegas Pro 10 Review

Vegas Pro 10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I absolutely LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this software and have never looked back. I've upgraded from Version 9 to get the more 3D processing for generating 3D videos (none of the competition can do as of this writing).
I was a newbie at making videos, and started off with Roxio Video Wave (which I would also highly recommend to anyone starting brand new). However, as my skills progressed, I found I kept wanting to do more than Roxio could accommodate.
I trialed lots of software (I tried Corel's suite, Nero's, Cyberlink's PowerDirector, Adobe Premiere Elements and Premiere Pro), with my hopes set the highest on Cyberlink PowerDirector and Adobe Premiere Elements.
Being a Photoshop user since Version 3 and loving that program, I couldn't wait to try the relevant Adobe Premiere Elements and Elements Pro. Unfortunately, they were total disappointments because of their complexity, kept crashing (those users who complain about that aren't kidding), and the lack of some basic intuitive interface workings. Plus with Adobe they install all sorts of extra "crap" software (bloatware I think the technical term is?) that runs checking registration, etc.
PowerDirector was great, but not expandable and had quite a few little annoyances with its interface I couldn't get over.
Reluctantly, I tried Sony Vegas Pro. I was reluctant because seriously... how many people have received decent software from a camera or hardware electronics manufacturer? Zip. Zero. You get those cheesy programs to make short clips or transfer files from your camera to computer, but that's about it.
Well, let me say Sony's Creative Software division that's created Vegas Pro has certainly altered my stereotype! They're a godsend!
I had a learning curve of about a day with Vegas getting used to their terminology as opposed to Roxio's (for example, in Vegas Pro media on a timeline is referred to as an "event". Roxio also has the same functionality as "envelopes", but Roxio doesn't call it "envelopes").
Anyway, Vegas Pro's functionality is exactly what I need/want in a software package. It does all the little things I find "non professional" producers would do. For instance, if I want a clip in a Vegas Project, I can just drag and drop it from Windows explorer onto the timeline and Vegas automatically does the import into its "library". In any Adobe project or PowerDirector, it's a 2-step process of first having to "import" it into your media library and then dragging from your media library onto your timeline. Vegas Pro knows what you want, and does everything automatically for you when you drag/drop (eg, import it into the media library, etc).
Vegas installed easily, starts in less than a minute on my 4-year old Dell laptop, renders quickly, and hasn't crashed once. It's also not bloated software, and doesn't install more software than you need.
Vegas Pro can handle almost any kind of media file you want to throw at it.
It comes with an amazing set of transitions and video effects out of the box (as PowerDirector does). But if you want more, dozens of companies produce hundreds of additional plugins (both audio and video) allowing you to do more. Two great ones are 3D Six Pack from Pixelan and the NeuBlue additions.
Video is a cinch to work with on the time line. In the same single clip you can easily slow video down, speed it up, and even reverse it without having to use or create separate subclips, and all just by clicking and dragging the mouse pointer. Super fantastic.
With audio, it's a snap to work with. I've even created a few remixes just by working with sound clips across the time line, doing fades, and adjusting audio envelopes (eg, the volume, playback speed, etc) on the time line. I can convert from anything to anything or vice-versa -- no more audio software needed!
Another big advantage of Vegas Pro over Adobe Premiere Pro is you can preview transitions and video effects *before* you actually apply them! In Premiere Pro, you can't do that. Who the heck wants to have to memorize transitions/effects to know what they might look like on your timeline before rendering?
Anyway, with Vegas you can also customize just about everything; windows can be docked however you like; you can write your own scripts to include your own functionality using .NET; the PDF manual was a breeze to read through and very comprehensive with great examples (free download from Sony's website);
After learning their Vegas lingo, it's become even easier and things just work.
The three drawbacks I find to Vegas (which are really minor) are:
1) the media library that came with it has nothing but "demo" clips which I can't use unless I purchase them;
2) the "trimmer" window where you can work with sound/video clips separately outside the timeline works differently than Roxio's similar interface. In Roxio, when you set an "in" and "out" point in a media clip and insert that into the timeline, that's the version (eg, you can't extend beyond the boundaries of the media w/o reediting the in/out points). In Vegas' trimmer window, you can set the in/out point, but when dragged onto the timeline you can extend beyond those points if you need to (I personally wish it was locked like it is in Roxio because otherwise there's no point to having the trimmer window as you can just do all your work in the timeline);
3) the Sony Message boards are restricted to people who have registered their software. So as a "trial user" you're out of luck. Also when registering (not activating) you have to provide Sony with all sorts of information (which I refused to do).
I've been recommending this software to anyone who's thinking of wanting to do more with creating videos than just the basic stuff. I'm not a fan of Sony products (computers, cameras, video cams, etc), but I absolutely love this piece of software. As much as I love Adobe Photoshop (and recently purchased the CS4 version), for video production I'm definitely a Sony software convert.

Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 Review

Corel VideoStudio Pro X3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sorry about the formatting, Amazon is removing all my spaces when I publish even though it looks fine in the editor.
Computer Specs:
Intel Core2 Duo @ 1.86 GHz
2 GB RAM
256 MB Video
32 bit
Windows Vista
My test:
Added 2 videos.
Added image stabilization to one
3D transition between them.
Rendered the project.
AVCHD in and MPG2 out (both in full HD, 1920*1440, Dolby 5.1 if available)
Video length 4 minutes and 20 seconds.Overall Review:
**** Corel Video Studio Pro X3
**** Cyberlink PowerDirector 8
*** Sony Vegas Movie Studio Pro Plus 9
**1/2 Adobe Premiere Elements 8
** Magix Edit Pro 15
* Roxio Creator 2010
* Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 14
Package Options:
My reviews are against the top versions of each product line. You will find that most of the differences between the top versions and the base are Blu-ray export options, and some add some extra sound options. See for yourself the option that suits you at the manufacturer's website in their respective product comparison guides.
Windows 7:
All seemed to work for me in windows 7, 64 bit with 4 GB RAM. I didn't do any tests with it b/c I wanted to use an older machine that would come closer to representing the average computer. This includes Roxio 2009, but not 2010 for reasons stated below.
Final Opinion:
If you want something super easy to use, then I would go with Cyberlink PowerDirector 8. If you want something with a bit more power that you can grow into, I would go with Corel Video Studio Pro X3. Sony Vegas Movie Studio Pro plus 9 may very well be good, but I see no reason to purchase it with the power of the Corel package.
If you are a masochist, go with Adobe, Magix, Roxio, or Pinnacle.DETAILS:
Adobe Premiere Elements 8
65 min render time
Pros:
You can search effects
Layout was good but not great
Interface was pretty straightforward
Cons:
Virtually locked my system
Slow and temporarily froze frequently
Output menu was cumbersomeCorel Video Studio Pro X3
19 min render time
Pros:
Great Output menu
Very fast
Easy to use user interface
Proxy editing*
Autofit for timeline
Cons:
No search function for effects
*edit*
After further review of this software, I had to knock it down from 5 to 4 stars.
I noticed more and more buggyness from the software the more that I used it.
It wasn't enough that one couldn't use it, but it was enough to be a bit frustrating at times.
*edit*
Cyberlink PowerDirector 8
30 min render time
Pros:
Output menu was nice
Very nice and easy to use layout
Cons:
No Blu-ray output
*edit*
Blu-ray output is available on Ultra.
After further use of this program, I have some issues with it and have lowered it to 4 from 5 stars.
I was disappointed with the menu editing in that you can not do text only menus, you can't really "customize" menus, and their stock menus total a whopping 2. They state they have thousands online, but almost all of these are menus that are horrible junk ones that others have created. There are literaly a few that are good or better. In addition, you can not search these menus, and the sorting is poor at best to browse them.
*edit*Magix Edit Pro 15
41 min Render time
Pros:
Simple
Cons:
Poor user interface
Oversimplified (Too simple I think for most people)
Very Cumbersome to use and add effects
Output options were confusing and cumbersome
Extremely limited options for PC output (which is what many will be doing)
A couple of lock upsPinnacle Studio Ultimate 14
Pros:
Nice little finished project to see what can be done
Nice interface for editing
Cons:
ONLY SOFTWARE that I was not able to import a video
Locked up my system many times and left errant process running at 80% CPU
Took 50 seconds just to load the import video TAB
When I selected videos to import and hit start import, absolutely nothing happened
Tried one of their movies and went to help to find stabilization and it crashed on me b/c I didn't have enough memory
No Blu-ray output
Cons on install on windows 7 computer:
Failure on export of file on all formats
I actually tried Pinnacle about 10 years ago and had absolutely nothing but problems. Spent many days downloading patches just to get it to work. Then, like a moron, I did an entire project and when I went to burn it, the burn failed every time. I see a decade later, I still can't export a file.Roxio Creator 2010
Pros:
-----
Cons:
They don't allow a trial download. I contacted them asking them if I could download a trial and even noted that I was a current customer. I personally like the 2009 Roxio. It was a nice "all-purpose" program. They told me that I had to buy it. I was offered a money back guarantee, but to do so, I had to send in a letter of destruction. This is way too much effort on my end to see if your software works for me.
I find it ridiculous in this day and age that you can't have a trial version of something, especially when EVERY ONE of your competitors does. In addition, this is how they were treating an existing customer!
You throw in all the compatibility issues that can occur in software in general and video software in particular, and that leaves me to think they have something to hide.
As icing on the cake, the following sentence was in their reply.
"Creator 2010 does support AVCHD software and hasn't been know to have any issues thus far!"
I replied to them about this OUTRIGHT LIE! First, you can read the compatibility issues on Amazon. Second, as a person that writes programs, there is no such thing as bug free software, especially video editing software.Sony Vegas Movie Studio Pro Plus 9
14 minute render time (NO ANTI-SHAKE IN RENDER, see below)
Pros:
Computer stayed pretty responsive during render
Savable packages of effects
How to guide is nice
Cons:
Couldn't search effects
Very, very cumbersome to use
Couldn't find stabilization
The render time approximation stayed at around 1 minute or 2 left the entire time
Here is my issue with Sony Vegas. I have compared its features with many of the other programs and they are all very similar. Now, when compared with Corel Video Studio Pro X3 and Cyberlink PowerDirector, they are virtually identical. I personally think Sony leaves their software cumbersome so that it "looks/seems" more powerful.
I was definitely most disappointed in this product because it was the one that I was looking the most forward to using. When I say that it is cumbersome to use, it doesn't mean that it can't be used. Let me give an example. I am a programmer, and in something like excel, I like the ability to write my own code to create functions and tools that it doesn't offer or to tweak ones that it does. HOWEVER, when I want to enter numbers in boxes, I just want to enter numbers in boxes. I don't want to click in a box, go to a menu or right click, select some gadget and then enter a number. It is ok for complicated things to be complicated, but simple things should not only be simple, but also INTUITIVE.
The main thing that I saw that you could do in Sony Vegas that you couldn't do in the others is change your transitions (both audio and video) ramp as far as how quickly they come in and go out. I am not talking about changing the time, but how your out video accelerates out and how you in video accelerates in during that time. It is a cool feature, but something that 99% of people will only not use, but won't care about either.
Another thing, the image stabilizer should be easy to do, and it may be. However, I did a search in help for stabilize, stabilizer, sta, shake, anti, etc. and could not find out how to do this very simple thing. This worries me greatly that if this isn't readily available in the help docs, then much of the other stuff probably isn't either.*A note on proxy editing.
Proxy editing is basically you working on a very low def version of your file, but when it comes time to actually render your output, the original file is used. Some view this as a crutch because they say you should be able to optimize the software to work with the high def video. My opinion is that if I can work faster, then I will work faster. Who cares what my resolution is while I am editing. If you have the fastest software out there for HD, and you can do your edits in very low def and it is even faster still, then why would you not want that?
