Microsoft Visio Premium 2010 Review

(More customer reviews)I am a long time Visio user from way back. Rather than reviewing all the Visio features, I will just comment on the changes that make Visio more in sync with the latest Microsoft office suite.
Generally, I think it is best to purchase upgrades and continue to grow with the product rather than try to figure out if there are new features that are meaningful to me. In the end, a few bucks spend every so often mean that one keeps up to date and avoid unpleasant surprises later on when features and formats are entirely different. With this reasoning I purchased Visio 2010. I already had Office 2007 which introduced the new ribbon style menus and after some initial adjustment had no issues with the new way of working.
Visio 2010, however, is a different beast. The ribbon style menus are horrible. I keep trying to figure out where the most simplest functions are hidden or how they are grouped/renamed. In some cases you will need to go into configuration settings and select "developer mode" to get menus that are otherwise missing (non-developer menus btw). It is difficult to work in this package, it is very difficult to like it. It appears that no software engineer part of the development of Visio 2010 actually uses this for him/herself. After many hours working with it, I just want to smack someone on that development team! Oh well, venting mode off.
Visio 2010 is a very capable package and the ribbon menu style is probably here to stay (at least for a while) so one might better get used to it. However, if you have a previous version and are happy with it, perhaps wait till a later release to see if Microsoft improves the menus.
For total capabilities: 5 stars, for crappy menus: 1 star; average 3.

Punch Interior Design Suite Review

(More customer reviews)This proved to be a very powerful program, but heed the warnings about how difficult it is to use. I use parts of MS office that no one has seen before and have a background in computer programming, and this suite still drove me very close to tears.
I used this just for an apartment floor plan to think through moving walls around, not for complete house construction or modeling.
Here are some tips that might make things smoother for you:
- For some reason, the default flooring thickness is 12", so my doors were getting lopped off at knee-level. Once I reset all the flooring thickness to 1", I could see the bottoms of my doors again.
- If you have a wide screen and it's set to 120 DPI, the display chops of some of the customization controls on the right side of the screen.
- The distinction between exterior and interior walls matters, and is often at the root of flooring and ceiling problems. (E.g., grass in the living room or tiled front lawn.) The wall types sometimes morph into each other by rules I never figured out. If I had to do this again, I'd do all the exterior walls first, lock them against changes, and then add interior ones.
- My performance with the undirected fly-through is exactly what you'd expect from watching me play speedracer. Better way: Click on the binoculars on the left and you get cursor you can position for a "controlled walkthrough." You can look around using the 3-d display, but no more accidentally falling through the floor.

Greeting Card Factory is the best yet. It has all of the features you find on the other programs plus it offers plenty of templates for every occasion. It is the most intuitive program and has plenty of clip art, sentiments and photos. It allows you to alter the printing on the front of the card as well as the verse inside. One of the best features is the ability to control the size of the thumbnail to choose your template. All of the other programs only offer you a small thumbnail to pick the template you want but Greeting Card Factory allows you to enlarge the selections so you can actually read what is on the card as you are making your selection. Much better than switching back and forth till you get the template you want.

Nancy Drew: Warnings at Waverly Academy Review

(More customer reviews)It didn't take me long to get hooked on these games. This is one of my favorites. It's nicely updated, easier to navigate. It has rich characterizations and an interesting mystery, although I found the scenery to be limited, typical small college and a tree outside- that's it. The puzzle games are more forgiving than they've been in the past as well as the clues. Often in this series, I get frustrated not knowing where the next clue is or how to get to it, a lot of time spent wandering around aimlessly clicking randomly on everything (or walkthrough). The learning interactive was interesting as usual. You also get to play shuffle hockey and darts as well as the typical match pairs game- that had me occupied for hours and it was just fun! The tasks are as annoying as ever. You have to make sandwhiches everyday, some of them were timed and I couldn't make them fast enough. I didn't guess right away who the baddie was- and that is always a good sign. Excellent effort!!

SmartDraw 2009 Review

(More customer reviews)I was lucky to stumble on Smart Draw. Once I discovered the richness and ease of use and its depth, plus (I guess) with 100 times as many templates as Visio plus really fine detailed clip art (I know its over at least 10,000 pieces,) I was hooked. I have been using Smart draw since I think 2000 or so.

I was/am sort of a Visio expert before it was purchased by Microsoft long ago. And I loved Visio - imperfections and all. But after discovering Smart Draw (the 1st true non Microsoft application that integrated itself into all the application in Microsoft Office)I did 90% of my work with it instead of Visio. It saved me time and gave me superior flexibility.

Yes I still use Visio (Smart Draw can even import VSS files) including vs. 2007, and I have upgraded Smart Draw to every new version since. They get better and better.
Unlike Visio, SD's training and examples are fantastic as is their really fine support. AND NO I DO NOT HAVE ANY RELATIONSHIP WHATSOEVER with Smart Draw.
When they branched out with their medical extension, I checked it out. Doctors should grab it! I have several great docs as clients and GAVE them gifts of the Smart Draw Medical version. Why? Many use it for training or customizing the incredible template/clip art collection for virtually any disease. Its great for showing patients custom pictures of procedures as well as an awesome adjunct for use (my orthpod does a lot of professional peer training) for training.
Unfortunately the one thing I don't like at all about Smart Draw is that it morphed when Office 2007 came out with that d__m ribbon! I hate that ribbon. But SD 2009 is still incredibly easy to use. You can even create your own Smart Draw library from your own art with its easy import tool.
If you are wise you will buy the packaged version, rather than download it. When you download it all of the templates do not come with it. Just images. if you use a new template, frequently it must be added by downloading. A real pain. SD used to offer the ability to download all the art, butt its hard to do now. But absent those two issues, Smart Draw rocks! I understand its legal version is as good as its medical one. Lawyers and police appear to really love it.

Punch Home & Landscape Design Professional with NexGen Technology Review

I recently purchased Punch Software's Home and Landscape Design Professional. I found it to be anything but "Professional." In attempting to educate myself on the use of this software, I encountered some disappointing deficiencies. Most disappointing is the door placement and properties of the program. I first attempted to place a 15 light double french door in a plan. When it comes to double doors, there is not a more common item than a standard 15 light, double, french door. To my dismay, when I looked in the default, double door, library, there was none. The program contains a door design power tool but who wants to spend hours learning how to design a common item. Even using the door design power tool, there is no way to select the type of glass that one may require in doors and windows. Neither is there a simple way to select whether a door is interior, exterior, metal, wood type, etc. Likewise, one cannot show the door swing direction on their floor plan line drawing, unless they draw the door as open in the 3D view.

Second, I tried to place a pocket door. Other than size and location, there is no way in the program to edit a pocket door, for type, style, etc. Even in the door design power tools, there is no way to design and/or save another style of pocket door. Likewise, there is no way to alter or create more segments in bi fold doors. Neither did the program provide any accordion doors of the type commonly used in laundry openings, etc. I would note that accordion doors can usually be created in a program by selecting more and smaller panel sections in a bi fold door. A lack of editing features on the bi folds, made that impossible as well.

Most inexplicable in this software is not being able to copy and paste windows and doors. I possess a number of design programs. Even the cheap, thirty to fifty dollar basic ones, have window and door features that are missing in this software. Most will allow one to click in a default slab door, then totally convert it to what is needed. By highlighting and right clicking, a small 3-D properties window usually opens to select style, grids, glass type, hinged, pocket, bi fold, etc. For a program to be named "Professional" and not have such basic design features is misleading. Especially at this price point. I contacted Punch to see if these features existed in the software. I thought perhaps I was uninformed as to how to access them. They confirmed that such features are not in the software.

The software was deficient in other areas as well: There was no good way to edit stairway handrails. It will not do invisible walls, a common item for design reference. The ceiling and soffit features are poor. The objects library was missing many common items like a single bowl, stainless steel kitchen sink, a sump pump, a well detailed furnace, etc. The cabinet, counter top and shelf design features were extremely poor.

The program has a split, side-by-side, screen feature for viewing the working floor plan and the 3D view of what you are doing at the same time. Disappointing however, is the fact that the software will not support systems with two monitors. Thus, the split screen mode often renders items to small to be practical to use. Likewise, the limited ability to edit, resize, etc., while in full 3D mode, is probably the greater shortcoming of this software.

The program also has a number of glitches. It constantly reverts back to default settings instead of what you selected. It will not always delete selected items. It will tell you there is not room for an object when there is. It will put in items that you did not select, like a base cabinet instead of a wall cabinet. Many of the features are cumbersome and overly complicated to use. Most frustrating is the fact that the manual and/or the on-screen instructions, do not always match the software.

My intent was to purchase a quick & clean home design software that was less intense to use than my Turbocad, Autocad, type products. A program that will not even do all of the basic door types, is not practicle for anyone to use. This is clearly a piece of software that was designed by software engineers without enough input from home builders or architects. Punch Software's Home and Landscape Design Professional could not be given a positive review by anyone that is truly familiar with various home design programs.

Punch took almost a month to respond to my detailed email inquiry about the missing features of this product. I will say to their credit. They took the product back and returned my full purchase price, even though I had purchased it from an online retailer and not directly from the Punch Web site.

MERSCOM Space Interceptor: Project Freedom ( Windows ) Review

(More customer reviews)Recently completed "Space Interceptor" on the easy setting with the following computer specs: Pent 4 (3.06 gig). 1 gig ram, Nvidia 6800 Ultra video card, SB Audigy 2 LZ sound, 5.1 Klipsch Ultra speakers, and I/O Magic 5.1 Surround Sound headphones. Here are my viewpoints.
1. Best space shooter I've played in years and years.
2. Awesome atmosphere, graphics, sound, story, voice-acting, mechanics, etc. Explosions are great and the weapons are powerful and uniquely varied enough to make a difference.
3. Easy to play basically with just the mouse and number keys (for weapon selection)and a couple of other keys. Very responsive. Multiple flying speeds with intuitive mouse wheel control. "C" key changes view from behind, cockpit, larger perspective.
4. Unlimited ammo for regular auto guns. Limited but sufficient quantities of secondary weapon ammo. Good balance.
5. Large quantity of destructable buildings, spacecraft, and objects all with fabulous demise.
6. Missions provide variety and challenge(especially latter ones).
7. Took me about 20 hours to complete. Needed to replay some missions over several times until I determined the best strategy/tactics/weapons/flying speed.
8. Great surround stereo sound with external speakers and I/O Magic Sound Assault 5.1 Surround Sound headphones ($67)
9. Tremendous quality product in all regards for a modest and more than fair price.
10. No auto save but you can save at any spot in the game. When you complete a mission be sure to manually save or you may lose your progress point. Plenty of free "save slots."
11. Didn't have any software glitches, slow-downs, clipping, etc. Seems to be well tested, polished, refined....at least on my computer with its configuration. The minimum specs for the game imply a moderate configuration.
Some areas you may or may not like:
1. Repetitive complimentary comments from fellow flyers on successful enemy hits. "Right between the Eyes", "New Ace", etc.
2. Some repetitive mission objective declarations & cutscenes during intense mission combat. Sometimes distracts from the flow and concentration. A few presented impatiently with haughty voice.
3. Minimal opportunities to "warm-up" to the characters involved. A few jokes and some conversation but they are "fighters" not "socialites."
Overall, I would recommend this software highly for a great "Space and Shooter" romp. It may be difficult to find except through Amazon and the publisher since it unfortunately hasn't received much publicity. Gamespot.com and IGN.com both gave it favorable reviews and stimulated me to purchase. I'm glad I did.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product and I was very disappointed! In fact, I returned it. All the images are low resolution and cannot be used anywhere except on websites. They are not print quality and; therefore, cannot be used for any print media such as books, brochures, advertising projects, newspapers, magazines, etc. I think vendors who sell clipart and stock photography should be REQUIRED to list the resolution of all the images they are selling. Plus, alot of the images are repeated, just in different sizes and file types. It's not 950,000 images and they are not print quality resolution; therefore, useless to most of us.

Adobe Premiere Elements 8 Review

Adobe released Premiere Elements 9 Trial, I have experienced none of the problems with Ver 9 that were present in the stability challenged Ver 8. PE9 remains 32 bit and is slow but it is stable, it is a very usefull editing tool for short projects and lower resolution video. Skip PE8 and go directly to Premiere Elements 9.

If you like to get "under the hood" of your computer and spend countless frustrating hours sorting out performance problems, Premiere Elements 8 is for you. PE8 has numberous fatal flaws some of which have been traced to conflicts with Realtek Audio drivers and Nvidia graphics driver installation software, other are the direct result of the feature bloat that was added to this release. These conflicts and issues render the PE8 useless to those that have Asus and Nvidia hardware or software on their computers. Asus and Nvidia are major players in the computer hardware industry; the extent of the conflict problem can be seen in the large number of reviewers that have given PE8 a very low rating. This type of conflict should have been sorted out by Adobe in beta testing before the product was shipped. Adobe released a patch 8.01 (02/26/2010)to address several of the problems plaguing PE8, some users report slight improvement but stability is still questionable. A large percentage of users report that even with the patch, Nvidia's newest drivers and ulilizing all know user researched tweaks, PE8 refuses to perform as advertized. PE8 does not work well in AVCHD, also do not consider this software if you are using 1080 resolution or above.
By all means download the free 30 day trial version from Adobe to test compatibility with your PC before purchasing this product or wait untill Adobe releases a patch to solve the stability issues many are experiencing. You may also wish to try PE7 which has very good stability and isn't bloated with marketing gimmicks and useless "new features" of PE8.

I received my copy of Premiere Elements 8 and Photoshop Elements 8 today. Installation was fairly easy with both programs but I can't see any improvements over PE7 unless you consider being even more resource dependent an improvement. The one feature that I was really hoping for in this version continues to be absent, PE8 cannot write Blu-Ray format to a file, disk only. The conversion of videos from PE7 to PE8 also caused many problems, skipping frames, refusal to render,dropping sound and repeatedly hanging the program during rendering of a four minute video. I have a new dedicated video editing Asus P6T,Intel Quad Core i7 with twelve gig of ram, Windows 7 64 bit ...what does it take to satisfy Adobe PE8? Those who give high marks to PE8 must have a server farm in their basement or are not editing in HD which slows PE8 to a agonizing crawl. Do not buy this software if you are filming in HD and your videos exceed five minutes or are multi track, PE8 simply can't handle the load of Blu-Ray quality editing, a fatal flaw for those of us with newer equipment. I have used Primere Elements for many years, I wish I could continue using it but it just can't meet the demands of multicamera HD. Sony Vegas is a far more suitable editing tool for HD, there is however a learning curve to overcome with Sony's unique "event chain" interface.
I recommend that all users of PE7 skip this upgrade as it offers nothing in usefull functionality or performance. I honestly don't see how Adobe can justify calling PE8 an "upgrade", it is simply a destabilized PE7 in a new box. The best feature is that PE8 does not overwrite PE7 so you will still be able to access and edit your PE7 videos which PE8 refuses to update or edit. Save your rupees for PE9, 10, or 11, PE8 is the upgrade that never was.

(More customer reviews)I am running Pro Tools 8 with Windows 7 64-bit and it works great. Yes, there were a few MINOR bugs with the initial release, but Pro Tools has made it very clear that Windows 7 64-bit is not yet officially supported. Their latest update however works PERFECTLY with Win 7 64-bit. In fact, the application runs very smoothly with minimal stress on CPU and memory. I typically use a lot of tracks and plug-ins. To date, this is the best application I've used in terms of system stress and audio quality.
These bad reviews seems to come from rookies who aren't quite sure how to use Pro Tools. Newer audio production apps are geared toward home studio/rookie musicians. Because of this, these same rookies pick up Pro Tools because it's the "industry standard" and immediately go back to SONAR because it's too complex for them. Just give it some time - learn the application and you'll love it.

Apple Logic Studio Review

(More customer reviews)So you want a whole music studio for under $500? What are you, some kind of crazy Mac user?
Apple's generous price drop for this version of what many consider to be the ultimate music tool (and I'm one of those) has removed any excuse one may have for putting off this purchase any longer. Meaning they cut the price in half and added twice the features of the original: Not only do you get a leaner, meaner and much easier to use version of Logic Pro, but they've thrown in updated versions of Soundtrack Pro and Compressor (previously only available with Final Cut), a live performance module called MainStage, all five Garageband Jam Pack titles, WaveBurner 1.5 for CD mastering, new effects such as Delay Designer .... all you need supply is lots of time and about 45 gigs of hard drive space.
As a happy user of Logic since version 6, I found the upgrade (available for just under $200) easy to grow into, especially being used to Apple's other pro apps, and really appreciated the addition of Soundtrack Pro 2, whose predecessor I'd used more for track mastering. The newer interface for Logic is more self contained now, with sliding panels replacing all those open windows you used to have to deal with ... although that is still an option if you're a person who thrives on complexity. Now you can look at both the Arrange Window and Matrix Edit (now called "Piano Roll", how quaint) in the same window, just roll it in and out as needed. Same with Audio Mixer, Score View, Hyper Edit, etc. In keeping with this more streamlined method, some of the tools are more hidden away which, along with other changes, I'm quickly getting used to. Another rollaway panel gives you access to instrument settings (and other audio resources) by way of a Soundtrack-like browser -- don't like that piano sound and don't feel like scrolling through all of them? Just pick one off the list, and it's there!
Another nice feature you'll see right away is some handy standard templates: Now, instead of trying to figure out how many blank tracks, and what kind, you may need for a certain project, just click one of the template buttons and you're on your way. You can easily customize them if you're a seasoned user. The one that has this user the most excited is the orchestral template ..... a whole symphony orchestra, ordered the same as it would be in a classical score, with instruments already loaded and regions just waiting for note entry. Now that's power. You can transcribe classical works using Logic's score editor, which by the way will also print out scores should you ever hire live musicians for your compositions.
One thing that will make Logic veterans happy is, now you don't need the USB XS-Key to be plugged in to run the software. Upgraders only need it to install, then just unplug it and drop it in the box. New users won't even have to deal with it. They don't know what they've missed, and they're better off.
In summary, Logic is the solution for the Mac-based musician, as far as composing, arranging, recording, looping, producing, scoring, sound designing, whatever-ing in an audio capacity. No messy cables and reels of tape all over the place like in the old days, just launch and bring musical dreams to life. I can't emphasize enough what a good deal this is (without sounding like a salesman), and once you get over a slight learning curve you realize the possibilities are virtually boundless for what you'll come up with. Just be aware: this ain't no Garageband. Logic is for the serious musician or music producer for whom music matters above most other things. This is what obsessed people do with their time. If this sounds like you, well, you owe it to yourself to make the most logical investment.

Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 4.0 Review

(More customer reviews)I wanted to get started with digital scrapbooking, but most websites I read focused on Photoshop Elements, and purchasing digital paper and elements individually. I wasn't sure that I wanted to spend that kind of time and money, so I decided to give Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 4.0 a try. I've been using this software for several months now, and I really like it! It comes with lots of ready-made templates, which really are completed layouts--just add pictures. The templates are fully editable, though, so you can still add, delete, resize, or move any element or picture. You can also start from scratch, and build your page using the wide variety of backrounds and elements that they provide. If you aren't satisfied with their offerings, you can use any papers or elements that you can find on various websites--the program recognizes most regular file types (such as .jpg, .gif, and .png). Though some of the provided graphics are typical clipart, and not really what most scrappers would use, they still offer quite a lot of backgrounds and embellishments that are wonderful. (And contrary to another reviewer, you CAN change the color--right click the item, choose "edit photo", then the "adjust color" tab.) The software also comes with a pretty good user's manual--that seems rare for software these days! Very useful for getting an idea of all the different things you can do with this software. You can also save completed pages as a .jpg or .pdf file for printing or to give to other people.
There are a few things I'd like to see improved. 1. I'd like a better tool for finding and importing the photos. 2. I'd like more templates in the landscape format. 3. I'd like a viewer that would show 2 pages side-by-side.
**Important Note** Read the system requirements carefully! The entire program gets loaded onto the hard drive, and takes over 3 Gbytes. It's also a resource-hog when running; if your computer is too old, you will NOT have fun trying to run it!
All in all, this program is easy to learn and use. It gives you as much or as little control over the layout as you want. And with all of the various graphics that are included, it's an incredible bargain!

First of all, I did not receive any "sticker paper" as promised in the product description. The next big disappointment occured when, after reading the fine print, I realized my printer was not reccommeded for use with the shrink sheet or sticker paper (had I recieved any,that is). Lexmark Jetprinter 2050 users, as well as HP DeskJet 1200/1600c users, beware.
