Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14 Review

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third iteration of Pinnacle Studio, having owned versions 11 and 12 as well. I also own and have used several other video editing packages running from high to low end. At the top of the low end range, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection 14 comes in as a solid five-star performer - if you are willing to tolerate some minor stability issues. For reasons I don't pretend to understand, all video editing programs seem to have stability issues to one degree or another. Sometimes I think I may be part of the problem as I rush ahead performing other operations while the CPU is still rendering what I've already done. Other times, I just plain don't know: like Adobe Premiere Elements 7 simply not running on a Vista 32-bit system while it ran on a 64-bit version without problems. Given time, I could probably narrow down the issues, but I'm not that concerned. With Pinnacle, I am politely informed that the program has malfunctioned and given an option to close the program. Do that, restart Pinnacle and I'm back in business within a few seconds. Do frequent saves and the occasional crashes don't hurt.
Pinnacle runs about a 12 month cycle between new major releases. Frankly, every other release could probably be skipped because the improvements are not generally that earthshaking.
I am glad, however, that I upgraded to Version 14. There are three variants, each having a few more features than the others. Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection is the top of V14 line. The only drawback is that some of the bonus content, such as the SoundSoap program, are no longer included and earlier versions will not run in V14.
The good news is that the user interface has been simplified again. Pinnacle uses context-sensitive functions. In other words, double-clicking on a video clip brings up a different menu than you'd get by double-clicking on a still image. I've found the current interface to be somewhat more sensible and easier to use. There are three primary tabs: import media, edit and render output. Import gives you the choices you would expect, covering the waterfront from analog video to AVCHD. It's pretty simple to use with some good on the fly scene selection options. There are also options for directly importing from a digital camera, and interesting, a stop motion option that lets you build something resembling a flip book. Automatic scene detection is available for those who want it. Personally I find it more of a nuisance than a help.
The editing section has everything you could want in a solid low-end program. The user interface offers a storyboard or timeline or text listing formats. I am generally in the timeline view. There are scrubbers both in the movie preview window and at the bottom of the timeline, so reviewing video is an efficient procedure. Lots of keyboard shortcuts permit a speedy workflow. There are dozens of ordinary transitions and a couple of dozen other effects that will probably see little use. Plug-ins offer special features such as pan and zoom on still images, RGB color correction and so on. There is Picture-In-Picture and Chromakeying. Pinnacle provides its own custom music program called ScoreFitter, which as the name implies will generate music of a sort to fit the time of your clips. There are also some sound effects.
There are tracks for primary video, overlay video (which can also be used for dual camera shoots), titles, music, sound effects and voice overs. All in all, it's a nice, functional layout.
Pinnacle provides two competent, if not brilliant, titling programs. One creates static text which may be kerned and otherwise adjusted. It may be used to create DVD menus and the like. The other, called Motion Titler, allows more dynamic titles. Third-party titling programs run rings around it, but it is still quite usable for those who don't want exceptionally elaborate titles.
Pinnacle includes something they call "Montage Themes" which the user can customize with clips, photo and captions. They are pretty hokey, in my opinion, and not something I would use.
You can output to just about anything. DVD menu layouts are included and you can create your own. Almost all common codecs are included for video output, which is nice.
Overall, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14 is a very nice video editing application that I would rank at the top end of the low-end programs. It has everything the average hobbyist videographer and, in a way, functions are more accessible than in Adobe Premiere Elements. But there's a caveat: buy the printed manual if it isn't included with your Pinnacle package. The manual itself is somewhat difficult to deal with, but comes in extremely handy as a ready reference when you need it. I have several low-end video editing packages and Pinnacle is the one I find myself using most often. It offers, I think, good value for the money and an unusually good user interface.
Jerry

Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 9 Review

Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 9
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before buying I downloaded some demos and liked the roxio program. Here's why.
I'm just okay at troubleshooting pcs so I feel that this program was made for someone like me. I don't want to degenerate other programs cause I don't know them so well. But I found them to be very technical and I didn't understand all the terms. Roxio is easy to understand and I could do things very quickly. I will admit that my husband takes care of the technical parts like installation and the XP fixes. I can't say anything about those things but the program has worked without trouble for me.
I wanted to learn how to fix photos and make slide shows, especially since we have a big family reunion coming up. I'm not doing special effects but I am cropping and fixing a lot of the red eyes. I also have some 5x7 and 4x 6 photos. I wanted to put them all in the same size and there is a menu item that will change a lot of photos at once. I didn't have to go to each photo and make the size change. The slide shows are incredibly easy to make. Instead of one long show I've opted to make several, categorized by decade. That way I could add different music to each show. I also like the way the program pans and scans. You can really see the photo instead of it just whizzing by.
Of course I need copies to give to everyone. I used the disc copy to make several discs. Many of the older people don't use computers much but they all have dvd players. The program makes such dvds. My husband said that the slide show is really a video so I can send it to my ipod. I plugged in the ipod and chose the video file. It did move to the ipod and I didn't have to do much. And since we will be making videos of the reunion, I will start learning how to use the video editing programs.

Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 Review

Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Video editing on the PC is more voodoo than artisty - almost every "consumer level" editing program on the market has compatibility problems, the software that comes with the hardware tends to be next to useless (if you can get it to work at all), and customer support is TERRIBLE. Most of what is to be found is geared towards either 1) encoding low-quality video either from TV or cell phones or 2) "dummy-editing" for those that want to get poorly-edited YouTube video on the air. Consumers that want to do high-quality video editing but aren't professionals (read: can't spend thousands on one piece of software) are, for the most part, ignored.
Having messed with numerous products including Pinnacle Studio (very buggy and contains huge compatibility issues), WinTV's Win2000 (comes with their card - lacks usefulness), VirtualDub (free and having huge potential with numerous features, but unless you're willing to spend a tremendous amount of time working with it, have the exact hardware the fan-community is using, and have superior knowledge of the technology, you won't find it useful), etc... in the end, Premiere is the best. It is professionally done, VERY compatible compared to other software packages, powerful, easy to use, and easy to understand. If you want to do video editing on the PC, this is where you should start - everything else just creates too many headaches.
So, what can you do with Premiere Elements 3.0? You can combine multiple video clips into a movie; you can narrate a video; you can create video for your blog (if you have a camera); you can burn professional-looking DVDs with full menus that will blow people away. Whether you are making home movies of your kids, compiling a highlight reel of your best sporting moments, or making a movie on an extremely tight budget, this is the best software out there in the price range.
As to what 3.0 improves from 2.0: To the casual user not a lot. There are a few more minor options, but the big advantage comes when burning DVDs - in 2.0, my sports DVDs looked terrible with a great deal of "jumping" (I'm assuming this was caused by the software not using enough compression keyframes, but don't quote me on that) - in 3.0, everything is extremely clear and smooth. There are also more exporting options and more useable codecs, though the software still lacks the ability to switch to any installed codecs (a major flaw, IMO, but one most other programs at this level share).
Note: In order to make DVD templates (DVD Menus) for 3.0, you need Photoshop Elements 5.0 - earlier versions do not seem to work (or, at least, I can't get them to work properly). While you can make very good DVD menus within Premiere, you can't save them from Premiere for use in other projects. If that is something you might want to do (and, quite honestly, it may not be for many users), pick up the "bundled" version of Premiere and Photoshop and save yourself some money.
Now, a few things that Premiere Elements can't do/doesn't do very well:
- Capture video from "legacy" devices like VCRs. Premiere can capture video from some devices, but it doesn't work particularly well with many capture cards (nor is it really designed to). Either send your VCR feed through a digital camcorder or use another recording method ("Tivo" or a capture card with useful capture software).
- "Mega" special effects. Premiere Elements has numerous effects like dissolve, fade, time-stretching (slow motion), and distortion - it does not, however, do major CGI-effects. You might be able to pull of a Star Trek "beam in" effect, but you'll need another program for most others.
- Post-capture video improvement. Premiere Elements can do some video enhancement, but it is more of a timeline editing tool - if you want to significantly improve the quality of your captured video (removing major noise, massive high-quality zooming, etc..) you'll need another program.
To address a few other negative reviews...
"Just a quick warning: trying to deal with Adobe is a nightmare. I spent 45 minutes on their customer service line today, waiting for someone to answer. Twice, I was disconnected and had to call back."
I've never had to deal with Adobe's customer support, so I don't know whether or not this is true - I do know, however, that CS in other retail companies in this market is terrible."I imported some video from a DVD that I made myself, and the program shut down. It said I had to go to a website and type in a 20-digit "encoder activation" and the site would give me another number that I could use to activate the MPEG2 part of the product. But the site won't take the number. I keep getting an invalid code message when I type it in."
This situation is true - you will need an internet connection AND you'll have to register a code to enable certain compressors. However, all you need to do is copy and paste the code from the software window and into your web browser (there's even a button that will copy the code - you just have to paste it in). No one I know has ever had the problem described above - though it could occur.
"No web support or patches on Adobe site to date. "
There are numerous plugins available on the Adobe website and a patch - just go to the updates section of their webpage.
In conclusion: Premiere Elements is the best software out there for most users. Other reviewers should feel free to post if there is a better software package available.

Greeting Card Factory 8.0 Deluxe Review

Greeting Card Factory 8.0 Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been trying different Greeting Card Software for some time and have the following programs installed on my computer at this time:
American Greeting CreataCard Plus 4.
American Greeting PRINT! Premium 2.
Hallmark Card Studio 2009( Have renewed since 2004). Will not renew again.
Hallmark Comedy Card Studio.
Printmaster Platinum 2.0.
Card Builder from Pearl Mountain.
Greeting Card Studio.
Greeting Card Factory is the best yet. It has all of the features you find on the other programs plus it offers plenty of templates for every occasion. It is the most intuitive program and has plenty of clip art, sentiments and photos. It allows you to alter the printing on the front of the card as well as the verse inside. One of the best features is the ability to control the size of the thumbnail to choose your template. All of the other programs only offer you a small thumbnail to pick the template you want but Greeting Card Factory allows you to enlarge the selections so you can actually read what is on the card as you are making your selection. Much better than switching back and forth till you get the template you want.

Quicken Deluxe 2009 Review

Quicken Deluxe 2009
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using Quicken Deluxe for about 6 years. I just upgraded to Quicken Deluxe 2009 and it 20 seconds to look at an account and 10 seconds to process any transaction which makes it basically unusable. After working with Quicken support for an hour and verifying the data file, support said that 2009 didn't support large data files well, they suggested I just delete all my old transactions every year and it would be much faster. Of course that defeats the whole purpose of using Quicken.
My quicken data file has about 20MB of data and quicken 2007 used about 200MB of ram to open it. Quicken 2009 now uses about 1.2GB of ram to open the same file.

Medieval: Total War Gold Edition Review

Medieval: Total War Gold Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Activision and SEGA, who created the Gold Edition made a major error with this product. When downloading the 2.01 patch to play Multiplayer, the game does not recognize the Gold Edition as a Medieval Total War or Viking Invasion game (since this is a 3-CD set) and will not install. An unofficial patch has been created, but you will never be able to play Multiplayer with this "Gold Edition". I mailed SEGA/Activision with a complaint about this failed product and their failure to fix the error, and I was supplied with another copy, which was the Medieval Total War: Battle Collection" copy. I do not advise purchasing this error-ridden product.

Quicken Home Inventory Manager Review

Quicken Home Inventory Manager
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Long time-application user writing:
Home Inventory Manager by Quicken is the slowest and most awkward program I have ever used -- or tired to use. Most annoying is its non-intuitive approach to data entry, lack of flexibility, awarkward image importing, and slow, slow performance and screen-redraws. It seems as though some novice ported it from an old Cobol program routine.
Quicken might want to hang its head with shame; it does not belong in the QUICKen family, or on your PC.

War Leaders: Clash of Nations Review

War Leaders: Clash of Nations
Average Reviews:

Ok let me start out by saying that I am a veteran with these exact type of games. I have been playing these things for over 30 years now. I have every one of the Hearts of Iron games, I have Making History, Gary Grigsby's World at War, Axis & Allies (all versions that were made on the comp), just to name a few. Now I have this War Leaders and I tell you after watching all the gameplay videos on youtube, I had to get it! How is it? Well, it has bits of every one of those games I listed above all in one. A huge thing to say since those are all great games. Not to mention the graphics and effects, one word... WOW. This is one little jewel and the only thing I wonder is how in the heck it was only $[...] is beyond me. Especially considering all the actual WW2 units in the game that look like their real historic copies. Check out their webside and see what I mean. Oh one thing I absolutely NEED to mention is the map is totally original, a globe! One huge globe of the world. Ever played Super Power 2? That was the only game I ever remember doing that. If you are a fan of these games as I am, then put this game in your collection if its the last thing you do, it is off the charts! Search warspite2 on youtube and see all the footage I posted on some battles.

PaperPort Professional V12.0 Review

PaperPort Professional V12.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How can you rate a program you don't have and apparently have no intention of buying? While their comments reflect my experience with Nuance (Not Much) Support, they were not a review of this software.
Unlike the first two "reviewers" I actually purchased and installed PP12 Pro.
My original title for this post was going to be, "A Giant Step Backwards." In my review of PP11 Pro I summed up by saying I hoped Ver 12 would be better. It isn't.
The first thing you will notice is the new tabbed ribbon interface. Unlike MS and others who have adopted this interface, this one is not too bad. The desktop is nice looking, too. These are about the only things good I have to say about the improvements to the program.
By default, PP saves documents in pdf format, as it has since at least V.9.
First problem: the new PDF Viewer Plus. This is the default viewer when you view a document in PP. Though the "About" screen says copyright 1995-2009 this seems very much like V.1.0 software, as it is very buggy. It, BTW, still uses the old style interface.
Nuance says, "A more extensive annotation set includes notes, text boxes, highlights, straight lines and free-form lines, making it easy to add comments to documents." Well, that's partially true. Most of the annotations were available in previous versions..and they worked.
Most annotations seem to work o.k, such as lines, stamp, sticky notes, etc. The "select text" toolbar button doesn't do anything unless you chose "Select Text" first from the drop-down menu. Then the button will sometimes work. The "Crop" button doesn't work and there is no "crop" choice from the drop-down. There is also a bug that causes the program to close if you chose "text box" from either the drop-down or the button.
O.K. You can change default to "ImageView within PP." Now you have all the features you love in PP...and they work still...mostly. The "Stamp" button says "Prompt for File" when clicked on, but does nothing, and all options on the "Configure" section of the tab remain greyed out.
Nuance claims, "PaperPort Professional 12 delivers a 42% increase in accuracy over the previous version. It even allows you to apply language settings to OCR for improved accuracy in all supported languages." Apparently English is not one of those languages.
The OCR is not improved since 11.2. (I'm not sure why they changed it between 11.0 and 11.2 but that's a whole other rant.) It still does not OCR properly to Excel. Instead of putting Col A in Col A, Col B in Col B, etc, it still insists in putting them all in Col A. Read my review of Ver. 11 Pro for the gory details. It still does not OCR accurately when it is a pdf document.
Over all, IMO, the "improvements" to PaperPort 12 aren't. The pretty new face is nice, but that's not enough of a reason to get the program. PDF Viewer Plus is too buggy to use, especially when there are other more stable programs out there. The OCR engine is still a bust. Save your $99 or $149 (depending on which "Upgrade" option you choose) or your $163.99 and up for the non-upgrade version.
Tho I have a support ticket into Nuance I don't expect much. I availed myself to the 30 day money back guarantee and reverted back to PP11.0, bugs and all.
UPDATE 10/16/09: I (finally) received the following reply to my OCR problem with PP 12:
>>>
Thank you for contacting Nuance Technical Support.

This is regarding the issue that you were encountering with PaperPort.
Sorry for the late reply.
Unfortunately it is a limitation of PaperPort 12 to perform an OCR with no borders or column file when sending it to Excel. We also recreated your issue here on our lab pc and we are also have the same output. But if you do have Omnipage it will help your PaperPort to perform more accurately in OCR-ing your file.

A Better Way to Organize In all the buzz about enterprise-wide document management, the individual desktop has been largely overlooked. But as companies invest in document management solutions for the enterprise, they need to keep in mind that employees spend most of their time working with documents on their individual PCs rather than a network repository. It's easy to take for granted that Microsoft Windows provides all the features needed for handling documents, but that's just not the case. Only PaperPort Professional closes the gap between what Windows offers and the ability to manage scanned paper and PDF documents quickly, easily and effectively on a digital desktop. At the same time, it provides the perfect on-ramp to enterprise-wide document management systems. You simply won't find another PC document management application that can do all that.
The best thing to happen to your PC since Windows PaperPort is designed to work with Microsoft Windows in the most efficient way possible, leveraging what necessary features are already available for a complete desktop document management environment.PaperPort uses the existing folder structure in Windows while allowing you to customize what folders you want to see at any given time.PaperPort also creates searchable PDF files and provides a plug-in for Windows Desktop Search so these files can be indexed and searched. PaperPort is simply the ultimate document desktop for Windows.
Assemble custom PDF documents by dragging and dropping PaperPort Professional features a unique split desktop design that displays individual page thumbnails alongside document thumbnails. Just drag and drop entire documents within another document or selectively copy and paste individual pages from one PDF document to another. Quickly assemble custom PDF documents by combining scans and photos with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. And once your custom PDF document is assembled, you can simply email it to intended recipients. No need for costly printing, copying, faxing or mailing. It's like stacking, stapling and sending real paper--only a whole lot faster, easier and greener.
Safe and secure--compliance is mandatory Because of PaperPort's superior integration with Windows you can be assured that PaperPort will only allow access to folders on your computer to those who have the proper access rights. And you in-turn can only access those folders for which you have access rights.PaperPort utilizes in-place security developed and implemented through Windows so your IT staff won't have to reinvent the wheel and no additional investment is required. You will be prompted for passwords as necessary as if you were working directly in Windows. You also have complete control to change access to shared folders where you have administrative rights. In addition, PaperPort provides the ability to secure individual PDF files with advanced password control.
Intuitive thumbnail desktop PaperPort Professional provides a visual desktop with large, clear page and document thumbnails to improve the way you work with application files, digital photos, PDF files, scanned and electronic forms, saved Web pages and all your scanned paper documents. Quickly browse, organize and use all your files without having to open them to see what's inside.
Folder management Comprehensive folder management features allow you to organize documents for ease of information access. You can distinguish folders by choosing from 29 colors. Use folder directories to help you locate documents with ease. Attach folder notes and automatically add that information to files as you scan them. Even create multiple folders at once by importing a list of folder names from a text file.
Fast, easy electronic form filling Create neat, shareable and searchable forms that mirror paper originals in minutes. Extensive control over form elements ensures perfect forms every time. With PaperPort's FormTyper feature, you will never have to fill out another form by hand. FormTyper automatically recognizes check boxes and identifies the form fields so you can quickly tab to the next fillable field, type in the information, and print, save or e-mail the completed form. PaperPort's transparent stamps are perfect for adding scanned signatures. It's faster and cheaper then faxing or mailing. And you never have to worry about illegible handwriting!
Locate important folders immediately PaperPort Professional allows you to bookmark your commonly used folders so you can get to your documents right away. A "back" button makes it easy to revisit recently viewed folders eliminating wasted time navigating to information.
Find documents instantly using standard search engines Because PaperPort saves all your scanned documents and electronic files as fully searchable PDF files on your digital desktop, finding what you need is always fast and easy. All you have to do is enter keywords or phrases into WindowsDesktop Searchor Google to quickly locate a specific file on your computer or shared network.
Indexing on your schedule PaperPort Professional's flexible Index Manager allows you take advantage of non-peak processing times by scheduling when and how PaperPort will convert all your image files to searchable documents using the built-in OmniPage Search Indexer.

Easily Gather and Share Documents In today's business environment, you can't work in a vacuum. Email provides a fast and convenient way to review and approve documents within a workgroup, or with people outside your organization. PaperPort Professional 12 works with your current email system to enhance the digital review process by converting Word and other editable documents into more secure PDF files which can be read and annotated, but not edited. No more email bottlenecks, file compatibility issues, or confidentiality risks. At last you can share documents simply and securely, while making it easy for colleagues and customers to provide their feedback.
Scan efficient, small color PDF files for sharing Scanning and sharing color PDF files can be a daunting task. Each page of a typically scanned color PDF file can be over a megabyte in size. If you are scanning several color pages or more, the size can be too large to send that file through email. PaperPort Professional now uses PDF-MRC High Compression Technology to turn a 15MB color file into less that 2MB!
Capture review comments with a rich set of annotations For capturing review comments, PaperPort supports creating and viewing annotations within PDF files, including sticky notes and highlights, as well as straight and free-form lines. Text boxes provide full control over text and box attributes.
Dynamic and transparent stamps PaperPort's dynamic stamps automatically include author, date and time. Transparent stamps are ideal for adding scanned signatures to documents to indicate approval.
PDF security features Advanced security features like passwords and encryption, let you control who can access and/or modify specific documents. This way, you can share documents without risk of confidentiality breaches or unauthorized modifications.
Capture web pages as PDF Capture Web pages as PDF files, providing a full-color duplicate for use offline. This is a great way to store a permanent record of a Web site or speed up Web-based research. It's also ideal for sharing Web pages as PDF attachments instead of sending a link that requires connectivity to the Web. Captured Web pages look exactly like they would if you had sent them to your printer, so it's perfect for saving copies of receipts from web purchases without wasting paper.
Section 508 and Microsoft Windows XP certified PaperPort Professional meets Section 508 standards, established by the US government to make software accessible for people with disabilities. Plus, it's certified for use on the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.
SendTo document workflow You can e-mail, fax or send your documents to repositories on a networked file server with a simple drag-and-drop onto the PaperPort SendTo Bar. The PDF file format combined with the SendTo Bar makes it easy to distribute documents in a form that is viewable and printable on any computer around the world.
Seamless movement of files between PC and ECM systems PaperPort Professional lets you quickly move or scan files between individual desktops to document management repositories such as Microsoft SharePoint.

Quicken Personal Finances Deluxe 2007 Review

Quicken Personal Finances Deluxe 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just migrated from MS Money 2007. I've been a user since 2002 (versions 2002 & 2004). I was very happy with Money 2004, but was forced to upgrade to 2007 to continue online services. Some features that were important to me were removed (bill multi-selection with immediate account balance projection and Money Express as a bill reminder). So I decided to finally make the jump to Quicken.
The bad: My first impression, after coming from Money's clean interface, is the busy clutter of the home page. Money didn't use windows (how ironic) like Quicken does. If you keep opening reports, and jumping to other areas, you'll find yourself with piles of windows at the bottom of your screen. I found the navigation clumsy and it was difficult to see the whole screen at my preferred screen resolution of 800 X 600. And, why no option to keep Frequent Flyer Accounts for the very common rewards programs that are out there?? It can be done with an "Asset" account, but I thought there would have been an option for it. And I think the cash flow projection can be improved. Although I like the calendar that shows my upcoming transaction and the impact on my checking account, in the last version of Money (NOT 2007-it's why I left) in the Bills screen I could multi-select several bills and get a projected outcome of my balance. That was a GREAT feature! I hope Intuit considers something like that on its calendar or in the bill screen (I've already written twice to suggest it).
The good: Reports, reports, reports. You can print from practically any screen. Beautiful reports. And you can attach files to your transactions. And, far more customizable than Money. I like the weblinks right on the bill pay screen so I can go right to my payee's website. (Money made that a two step deal to try to get you go with its MSN Bill Pay service. Why should I if I get it from Citibank for FREE!??)
And, the Bill Reminder is okay (Money did away with its "Money Express" for security reasons, yet another useful feature that I grew to depend on). But, I don't like that the Bill Reminder program does not require a password and will show anyone who cares to click on it all my upcoming transactions. Why no password protect?? And, it doesn't run on the taskbar, so once you close it after startup, it's gone until you (or anyone else at all, as I already said) cares to open it again.
And did I go through hell to convert my Money 07 file! I had already researched the reasons why the data converter that Quicken provides on its website would not convert my Money file and what my options probably were before contacting Intuits "Live Chat" support. After being annoyed by having to repeat everything I already typed to the techie and finding he was just going to the forum and doing the reading I had already done, I made a request to be elevated to higher tech support. After reiterating what I had read on the forum, the tech gave me a link to get the Quicken 02 version that I knew I needed. I then had to shorten all my Money account names and categories, export the .QIF files for EACH account. Install Quicken 02. Import each .QIF account. Start Quicken 07 and convert the Quicken 02 file. My data was a little quirky because I some categories became payees and detached from their transactions, but so far my balances look right. I downloaded my transactions from my bank and credit card companies in little time.
Overall, I think I've decided to keep Quicken. I sure went through a whole day or two trying to get the data converted and looking right, so I already feel commited. It does seem to be ahead of Money somewhat and I'll get used to the interface. Anyone looking to try either product, don't forget to backup your data file somewhere that is not in the original directory, so it is not over-written. Several backups are wise.
Hope this helps.
Update: January 12, 2007
I am sticking with Quicken for sure. After constant "tweaking" I have become accustomed to the home screen and the navigation and would not switch back to Money even if it was free. I love the "go" links that are on my bill page making it easier to go to my payee's website. The only convenience Money provided in its update centered on you signing up for its online bill payment service. The calendar with the optional running balance is very handy at-a-glance, especially the ability to add notes to it. I am glad I took the time to convert my file. It was worth it and I would now give this product 4 stars (because of the difficulty with the data converting).
Updated 01/23/07:
My earlier review was premature. Although I do like the customizability of the software, it has alot of problems downloading transaction. Sometimes it will get your transactions from your financial institution and bring them home, and sometimes they just disappear. Even importing files is difficult. It is very quirky. And I am computer literate. I went and downloaded an MS Money 2007 trial (I was originally running Money 04 and upgraded to Money 2007 on January 1st with 30 days money back refund. Not being thrilled with it, I tried Quicken a week later and liked Quicken better so I got my money back from Microsoft). Although I had issues with Money 2007 removing some features, it at least was dependable and kept my accounts up-to-date. I am giving Quicken another 30 days (and have spent hours on its forum) to figure out its issues (it has a 60 day return policy). In the interim, I am updating my transactions in both programs. (I should add that to convert my Quicken file to Money took all of a minute. Not so to convert my Money file to Quicken -- that took over two days and required downloading a prior version of Quicken!) I will update one more time. Hope this helps someone.

Updated 2/3/07:
Last update. I have come to a complete understanding of Quicken. One not so immediately apparent difference between it and Money is when you download your transactions via web connect (when you go to your bank's website yourself, as opposed to direct connect, where your program does background banking for you) Quicken will NOT let you re-download transactions that it already imported. Even if you deleted a transaction something by accident. It "remembers" it had already imported that transaction. Money will let you import as many times as you want to. If you really had to re-download to Quicken, you would have to delete your cookies first. Overall, this is not a problem. Quicken allows you to very easily manage your data files with backup, copy, rename options right from the program. I find it a far superior product than MS Money 2007.
UPDATE: 07/25/08
Still with Quicken Deluxe 2007. No complaints. I will be upgrading when they tell me my internet services have expired, which will probably be 2009.

Pinnacle Liquid Edition PRO Version 6 - Advanced Video Editing Review

Pinnacle Liquid Edition PRO Version 6 - Advanced Video Editing
Average Reviews:

Pinnacle is notorious for one thing, and one thing only: crashing your system.
The only video editing software more unreliable than Pinnacle is Windows Movie Maker.
If you like having hours of work disappear altogether, simply because you moved your mouse too fast, or didn't wait for that hourglass icon to go away before choosing your next action, then buy away.
But if you actually want to do something productive with a video authoring suite, then look elsewhere. Pinnacle is not for you.

Quicken Home & Business 2009 Review

Quicken Home and Business 2009
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used Quicken for 15yrs+, buy every major upgrade. But this one has no new significant features, it adveritses some, but they don't stand out. I think there might be some extension of current features, but it's not changed my organization or advanced my reporting or insight in any new ways. I would not buy this particular upgrade had I known how insignificant this upgrade is for current users. I gave three stars because overall Quicken is still a GREAT product, just a useless upgrade for current users.

As of this writing, Quicken's servers have been non-functional 90% of the time, meaning that I cannot download my financial institutions' online data. The program itself is good, but don't expect it to be able to download your financial data.

QuickBooks Pro 2006 Review

QuickBooks Pro 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sadly Quickbooks 2006 is only a minor upgrade from Quickbooks 2003. Users should also be aware that they will be forced to upgrade this software. at considerable expense, every 3 years. Also payroll services are not included and cost $150.00 more PER year. See "QuickBooks Standard Payroll Subscription" on Amazon.
The upgrade from Quickbooks Pro 2003 went very smoothly. Unfortunately the software, with no notification to the user, adds a second user to the XP operating system, necessitating logging on as a particular user when your computer boots.
We've found no real benefits from this "upgrade". The software boots much slower thanks to the DOUBLING of the company file. New users may find the redesigned home page useful and despite a great deal of verbage - that is about all that is new here.
New users should take advantage of the 30 days of free support - after that Quicken's dubious support is very high priced.
Quicken's business model is important to understand. They do not tweak their software, from year to year, for increased useability. The only changes that Quicken seems to devote their programming talent toward are new features, some well implemented and some poorly implemented - I don't think it matters to them - anything that will suggest a reason to purchase or upgrade the software. How easy the software could function on a day to day basis seems to be never given a thought.
Secondly Quicken expects your purchase of this software to be the first of many purchases from them. New business owners often will need expert help to set it up. Quicken, will of course, provide you with the name of a certified Quickbooks consultant, who for a fee, will set up the software. The software now comes with an on screen tutorial that may help some new users but it seemed less than complete.
New business owners should test all competing software to see what works best for them. Quickbooks is not bad software but it doesn't seem to evolve in a manner that is really sensitive to user's needs.
New users should also be aware that Quickbooks update feature routinely downloads very sizeable files that seem to do little if anything. A high speed internet connection is strongly suggested.

Quicken 2008 Home & Business Review

Quicken 2008 Home and Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently upgraded to Quicken 2008 from Quicken 2005. I did this since the online downloading capabilities for Q2005 would end in April 2008.
(Quicken's policy is to support the current version, plus the prior two years)
I've been a Quicken user & fan since 1994. Quite frankly, I'm not overly impressed with 2008. It has a new navigation bar, a new look and feel, and some (very minor) enhancements. Underneath the look and feel, it acts just like Quicken 2005.
If you're familiar with Q2005, you'll feel (almost) at home with Q2008. Obviously, Intuit is having a challenging time making a great product even better.
Overall, I can't recommend upgrading to Q2008 if you're not forced by Intuit. There aren't enough compelling new enhancements to justify an upgrade. It's still a great product, but the upgrade to Q2008 isn't a major improvement.

Quicken 2009 Premier Review

Quicken 2009 Premier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased Quicken 2009 in hopes of upgrading from the discontinued Microsoft Money product. I have been a long time user of Microsoft Money and have a lot of data to transfer. Currently, the transfer process is very cumbersome. You need to rename your accounts & categories to fit within the smaller naming conventions of Quicken. There are multiple reports you need to print out which a separate Quicken utility uses to import the transactions. And finally, there is a limit of 10,000 transactions that can be imported. I have tried to import multiple batches of transactions to stay under limits but no go.
Overall, still very difficult to upgrade from MS Money to Quicken 2009. Intuit has said they will fix this in the 2010 Quicken product and I look forward to that.

Quicken 2008 Starter Edition Review

Quicken 2008 Starter Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You should ask yourself - "how can a piece of software be capable of generating so much hostility from its user base?" If you can't think up a good answer, go ahead and install Quicken, and you'll have an answer before long.
Some of my favorite quirks from Quicken 2006 & 2007 that I'm glad to see survived the upgrade to Quicken 2008:
Basic arithmetic errors: sometimes, if you edit transactions in the register, every subsequent transaction will get confused about the running total (e.g., change a $10 debit to a $20 debit, and instead of changing the running total by $10, watch in delight and amazement as the running total leaps by thousands, literally thousands, of dollars).
Basic reporting errors: go ahead and open the category list, and click the (very unintuitive) button to generate a report for the category _DivInc. If, like me, you have several years of investment transactions, you're sure to have dividend income, but Quicken will tell you "no transactions for this category." Funny, if you type _DivInc into the global search window, it will bring up all those transactions the report couldn't locate.
File corruption: sometimes, I like to imagine Quicken's routines as a bunch of angry little gnomes running around the traces of my processor and through the registers of my memory. This is because, every so often, the gnomes demand a sacrifice, and offer up burnt offerings of your data integrity to their terrible god of woe. I can't otherwise imagine how downloading QFX data from Hewitt Associates confused Quicken so - in the online center, it shows "number of outstanding transactions: -65,536" Yep, negative 2 to the 16th power of transactions outstanding.
Probably the worst part about Quicken, however, is trying to free your data. If you've got any kind of complicated financial picture (i.e, if you're over 25 years old), you won't be able to free yourself from Quicken's grasp, since the only way to get data out of the program is in QIF format, one measly account at a time. Funny, they don't support _importing_ QIFs, claiming, and I quote, "QIF technology is over 10 years old and was designed for technical support purposes . . . QIF Data Import requires many steps to download, is a poor customer experience and can lead to duplicate transactions and errors." That old technology is good enough for you should you dare to _export_ data from Quicken, however. They're going to make darn sure that you have a "poor customer experience" and suffer from "duplicate transactions and errors" if you try to take your data anywhere else.
