This program conflicts with Office 2003, Acronis True Image, and (I assume) many more programs. Live Update crashes and hangs computer regularly, and many features of this program are disabled by cell phone providers. This product is cheezy to the extreme, aweful GUI, horribly slow Live Update downloads, I could go on and on. I paid $3 for it, and I am getting a refund. Don't even mess with it, trust me on this one...

Build In Time Review

Build In Time
Average Reviews:

I came across this game because I liked the build-a-lot series, but was slightly bored with them after a while. Well, not with this one!! It has many similarities such as building up the neighborhood, having goals you need to meet, etc... but is not as tedious and is slightly more fast-paced. It's somewhat of a time-management game. You have so much time to build up all the lots in the game, and your customers show up on the left with their orders. But it's not just simply houses you build here. You have garages, parks, and different paint colors. So it's more detailed than the first build-a-lot game. I loved it and highly recommend it!!

The Lord Of The Rings: Shadows Of Angmar Review

The Lord Of The Rings: Shadows Of Angmar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been playing since the middle of closed beta. I never leveled up very far, but I have nonetheless spent countless hours in Middle Earth, primarily as a Hobbit. Now I plan to purchase a Lifetime Membership!!
Lord of the Rings Online is, of course, a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game based on the story of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, The Lord of the Rings. The game is true to the books, as much as the New Line Cinema motion pictures were, although not so much true to the movies (which it doesn't try to be). What I find impressive is that every little corner of Middle Earth that was mapped out in the books have in fact been mapped out here in LOTRO--and indeed the books were plentifully detailed in maps and in written descriptions of the fictional universe of Middle Earth. But, for the most part, the subtleties of what is described in the book have been referenced if not fully implemented in the game, particularly in the Shire, all the way from the Sackville-Bagginses to the former Baggins home on the top of the hill at Bag End to the shoeless hobbits' feet! Of course, most LOTRO players will put shoes on their hobbit feet since shoes add armor, but at least the NPCs (non-player characters) are true to the shoelessness.
One step into Michel Delving and you'll quickly notice the unique music system implemented in the game. People are often standing around holding their lutes playing Stairway to Heaven or Row, Row, Row Your Boat. The ability to play notes directly into the game world has been implemented, albeit not in any way comparable to MIDI-driven music software.
While the graphics and landscapes and sky effects ("ooohh, pretty rainbow!", "wow, look at that flock of birds in the sky!") are very impressive, I must concede that the animations such as those of wildlife and monsters are not flawless, particularly where the beasts are idle. But these animation deficiencies are made up for when in combat, with few exceptions. For example, one of the Mature Bear attacks is simply a deep inhale, followed by the loudest bear growl you ever heard, as your character's hair stands on end and the steam from the bear's lungs fills the screen. Or, witness the presence of a Black Rider, and suddenly the screen starts zoom-blinking (very cool effect) and you start to see flashes of The Eye. These are player experiences that go a long way toward immersion of playing agaisnt NPC enemies.
There is an adequately diverse crafting system that would seem interesting but for the fact that it is a money sink. During the betas, farming in the Shire was lucrative, but profitability was dropped by the developers after players showed up in droves to stand around the workbench processing seeds.
The quests are plentiful to keep you busy indefinitely, so long as you are willing to leave the local vicinity. By the time most of the basic quests are completed in Eriador (which will take at least a couple months for most casual gamers), a free expansion will be offered in June. The quests are not typically grinders. For example, in The Shire, some of the quests will involve sneaking past Nosey Hobbits or Hungry Hobbits to deliver the mail or a mushroom pie from one town to another. One quest involves sneaking past a rooster to pick up chicken eggs. Another quest is to simply catch a little kid at midnight pretending to be an evil monster. Of course, these are "safe" starter quests; otherwise, there are plenty of quests that, for example, involve fetching a stolen item from a monster encampent, or killing off a monster boss. (As with some other MMORPGs, one learns that in these dangerous types of quests it is best to find nearby players and create a fellowship, since the power of two is better than the power of one, and success of one typically means success for the other as well.)
The game is not flawless, but I think that where there were compromises and cut corners the game makes very wise trade-offs. Stiff animations for incredibly immersive subtleties, for example. Because trade-offs do exist, I wish I could knock off 1/2 star, but this game seems so much more than just a 4/5 game.
People talk about how this game copies that game, but The Lord of the Rings franchise is the origin of so much modern folklore for RPG elements it's surprising to me that a LOTR-based RPG hasn't been tried before. I suppose no one was daring enough to take on the challenge of bringing Tolkien's work to life with honorable results. I'm really glad that Turbine did, though, because LOTRO is a real treat for fans of LOTR. And for what LOTRO tries to do and be, it does it exceedingly well--not necessarily to be a WoW-killer but to bring Tolkien's work to life in an immersive world full of other real players just like yourself in a PvE environment that would give absolute sheer joy to anyone who fantasized being in Middle Earth after reading the books.

Quicken Home Inventory Manager Review

Quicken Home Inventory Manager

Long time-application user writing:
Home Inventory Manager by Quicken is the slowest and most awkward program I have ever used -- or tired to use. Most annoying is its non-intuitive approach to data entry, lack of flexibility, awarkward image importing, and slow, slow performance and screen-redraws. It seems as though some novice ported it from an old Cobol program routine.
Quicken might want to hang its head with shame; it does not belong in the QUICKen family, or on your PC.

Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition Upgrade Review

Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently upgraded two of my computers from W95 to W98. For the most part my laptop upgrade went fine, although I did have to do some tinkering with it. Upgrading my desktop (a major name brand) was a major undertaking. I spent an entire day getting the upgrade to install properly. The machine would lock up or reboot itself in the middle of the install (not when it was supposed to reboot). Then I started to get "Windows protection errors." I went to the Microsoft website to find out more about these but their advice was not very helpful. The emergency startup disk that is created as part of the install is a joke. After loading from the diskette, there was not enough conventional memory to run my CD-ROM drive. It recommended that I add a line to the config.sys so that it loads EMM386. The problem: The EMM386 file is not on the startup diskette. For a while I was in a "catch 22." If I boot from the diskette I can't access the W98 install CD. But I need the CD to debug and complete the install.
After many re-attempts and much debugging, I finally got it to install, but it wouldn't recognize that I had a modem (a name brand modem). It took me another hour to solve this problem. It seems to be working OK now - although I've got my fingers crossed.
I've been in the computer business, working with PCs, for 15 years now and consider myself fairly competent technically. If I had been an average home user I would have been lost trying to install this. For the most part, the manual, help screens, and MS website all assume that you a computer geek - and provide their advice accordingly.
My advice. If you're still running Windows 95 and are not having any problems, stay with it. Windows 98 itself does not have enough new features to make the upgrade, and the cost of the upgrade, worthwhile (especially if you have the problems that I did). If you're a home user, wait until the second release of Windows ME is available and go with that. If you are a business user and have tech support people available, consider Windows 2000.

Empire Earth 2 Review

Empire Earth 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The game is a good bit of fun and easily can monopolize the hours of an entire day...until it crashes. If not for this, a solid 4 stars.
Sierra has carried a number of fine titles throughout the corporation's history; however as is their manner, the games will crash on whatever PC system. From IBM's to Monolithics (a moment of silence for the folks who started the RAM revolution with memory sticks), AST's, Lenova's to include ABIT and ASUS builds, their games are not as solid as should be for retail consumption, in my opinion. Disable all virus protection? Perhaps that would help; but the internet environment has become increasingly frought with untoward individuals with the perverse joy of causing harm and injury to innocent souls across the web. Since the vast majority of other software shops produce solid code, I cannot lay this blame on the shoulders of MicroSoft XP Pro.
I bought 3 copies of the game so when the grandkids come up to the ranch, we play across the LAN. Their mother has to near physically drag them from the computers when it's time to head back home. Well, she really did have to drag Darin off, this past weekend.
Suggestions: Anno spoiled me. It's nice when you can just hit an onscreen icon to instantly have your screen display the latest trouble spot, accomplishment, or manufactured ship. Finding military units and civilians is also much easier in Anno 1701 A.D..
Bottom Line: the game is fun and worth a look if you are a fan of Civs and such as I am. The autosave at least permits you to pick up where the occassional hard lock left off. Playing across the web or a local area network opens a new vista of enjoyment. After the kids left, I was faced with a large map full of hostiles which took me all night to mop up.:)
I heartily recommend grandparents with a LAN and some slight interest in gaming to invest a little money into multiple copies of a title. The children cannot wait to visit the ranch now. Of course, we don't get much work out of the youngsters; but it's my job to spoil them. They will work enough after they have grown up.

Magazine staff of 3 graphics folks use this to check PDFs before going to print. It works great and has a lot of features that we don't even know the full depth of yet. This was an upgrade for us from a version several years older and they've added a lot of nice touches to this package. It's taken a while to get used to the new layout of things, but we're really liking what we're seeing so far. If you need to prepare, preflight or edit PDFs for print, I highly recommend this package.

V-com System Commander 8.0 Review

The older version of this product worked well, but this version has some obvious bugs. After hitting disaster, I find that their tech support is just non-existant (at least through their email web form interface).
After installing System Commander, my system (WinXP 64bit edition) would no longer boot. I lost my whole system.
Beside the major disaster, I found problems with Partition Commander. It reported that one primary partition was a logical drive in an extended partition. Other utilities (linux, part magic, windows) reported the correct layout. I didn't go any further after observing discernable bugs.
Long story short, if you like destroying your system with a buggy product and working with non-existant webform for tech support, then this is an ideal product...

ACT 2000 Review

ACT 2000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Outlook is good and powerful and all that, but ACT 2000 can still do more. It has the ability to truly manage your business and help you identify trends among prospects and existing clients.
But don't judge it by how you feel about the program after the first three months only. If you want to use this software to its fullest, you need peace and quiet and uninterrupted time to set it up. The customizable fields make this yours, and that can slow you down on set-up.
The last company I worked for, we spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get the form of the database perfected before we started data entry. In retrospect, that is NOT the way to use ACT 2000. With my own company, we started by entering basic information about all (then) 275 prospects. We've only started with the customization now that we have a better feel for who we are and what we need.
If the people who will be using this contact management database are computer novices, you will need to send them to an all-day course. A database with its mail merges and all is not a word processor. Those employees will need someone who can communicate succinctly what the purpose of the software is.
But a good intermediate computer person should be able to figure ACT 2000 out on their own. It's largely intuitive, especially once it's already set up.
My gripes? As one of the first good contact management softwares out there (I loved the old DOS version), they could be light years ahead of Outlook. Instead, they are just slightly better.
And their support is not helpful at all, online or in person.
And, perhaps ONE day I will learn to love their funnel...

For the price this is a one of the best games I have seen. It has tons of stuff to build and is hilarious to watch. You get little skiers and snowboards doing everything from jumps and wipe out crashes to avalanches. It also has a lot of game play depth.(100's of stuff to build and control) You can even view your resort from any thing you have built or see it through the eyes of any of the skiers or snowboarders. I have really enjoyed this game and I would recommend it to anyone who liked roller coaster tycoon or anyone who likes to ski.

My Mail List and Address Book Review

My Mail List and Address Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Way back in the DOS days of computer, I relied on a simple, but very usable program called "My Mail List" for my various mailing list needs, which included membership and mailing lists for several rather large organizations. A couple of computers and Windows operating systems later, I finally needed to find another program to use...and was delighted to find that "My Mail List" was actually still out there. Version 7 is extremely easy to use, allows, in addition to the usual fields, 6 fields that can be customized by the user. The user can print addresses for labels, envelopes, letters, booklets, postcards and shipping labels, all of which can be designed by the user from a template. Address book data can be entered on a "data entry" window, which looks like filling out a form, or be entered on a data table, which looks much like an Excel file or other database file. If the user already has an address book in another program to import to My Mail List, that can be done using common .csv, .tsv, .txt or .exp file formats. My Mail List files can also be exported to other programs (such as Excel) by being saved in one of those common file formats as well.
There are a lot of nice little features in this program, and the help section and user's guide are very well organized and easy to understand.
The only thing that might be a little confusing is that when a mailing list is saved (generally to My Documents), there are actually four files that are saved. There is the main file, which the user clicks on to open the address list and the program, and three supporting files, which are not opened by the user, but just have to be there for the list to work properly. The files are easy to tell apart because the icon of the "main" file is different from the other 3. Anyone who may e-mail a list to someone else would need to remember to include all 4 files.

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k Southwest Topographic Coverage of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (DVD) Review

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k Southwest Topographic Coverage of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (DVD)
Average Reviews:

Pros:
Route-able Roads and Trails
24K Topo Detail
Cons:
Dark Colors and Poor Contrast
Missing Trails
Trails aren't named
No BLM or State Lands
My comments are limited to Colorado and I'm comparing the Garmin maps to another 24K topo set by Above the Timber. On a recent 3-day backpack I used the Above the Timber maps 95% of the time, Garmin 5%, readability was the key. The good news, both map sets reside inside my Garmin GPS and switching is a breeze.
In my opinion a 24K Topo is a back country map used for foot, horse or other slow travel. This map set combines the excellent route-able Navteq highways and also route-able trails, that's slick. However due to an overly dark set of color choices, it's very difficult to see the trails to make an intelligent trip and/or route selection. Having the routing engine choose your route based on time or distance misses the human dynamic of most scenic. Not seen a routing engine that knows my scenic values . . . it'll happen someday.
The Garmin maps do not show BLM or state lands, a very big deal in Colorado. Also the trails lack either names and/or numbers, kind of like having a highway map w/o names or numbers, huh? Names and/or numbers give you valuable clues as to where you're going, which you verify with occasional sign posts.
To understand my colors and contrast comment, you'll have to view the attached Nuvi screenshots. They're fuzzy, the Amazon import did that and I'm not sure why.

When I bought my Mac G3 (OS 8.6), I was frustrated by the lack of Mac-dedicated printers in the mid-price range. I eventually settled on the Laserjet 1100se because of my previous good fortune with HP. I had heard about the Powerprint USB to parallel converter that worked with the HP. I have had good luck with Powerprint after printing a couple of thousand pages with it. The speed is adequate for home office use. With a few exceptions, the printer has the same functionality as it would have with a Windows system. Some of the special characters will not print in some font sets--bullets for example. And the "economode" in printing does not work. This is only a minor issue. The kit comes with cable, special mini-centronics adapter, and software.

TimeWolf Pack 4.0 Multiuser 1-50 Employees Review

TimeWolf Pack 4.0 Multiuser 1-50 Employees
Average Reviews:

I attempted to find out what exactly this product was before I purchased it, but TimeWolf's website is just has a bunch of marketing crap with no technical details whatsoever. So I ordered it based on a request by the business owner. When I got the product, the installation manual was a jumbled mess that doesn't actually match the installation, and is much more simplified than the product requires.
I installed it on a Windows 2008 server with Exchange 2007 on it. The first thing the product installs is an SMTP server (HUH?!) which, of course, broke SMTP in Exchange 2007. The manual doesn't tell me what the SMTP server is for, nor how to configure it. Then it installs a hefty Oracle database. I honestly have no clue why a network accessible time clock needs all of this crap.
In any case, I called TimeWolf's support to find out how to remove this nonsense from my machine, and the support department is apparently a voicemail box even during business hours. I left two messages and got ZERO return calls.
I did my best to remove this crap and fixed my Exchange server.
I highly recommend avoiding the headache.

Timewolf 3.0 Employee Timewolf for Windows Review

Timewolf 3.0 Employee Timewolf for Windows
Average Reviews:

We used the first version of TimeWolf around 1999, and it was great for our small staff (30 people). Support was helpful and free, and it was a pleasure to work with the Lone Wolf folks. We upgraded in 2004 to version 3.10 and paid extra for the network version. Price for the package was around $500. This version is horribly buggy and the clunkiest professional software I've ever used. Our IT guy can't clock out if he works on a Sunday morning - he can only clock in!! Shades of Hotel California. Lone Wolf touted the sick and vacation leave feature as a plus, but after spending hours & hours trying to make it work, I gave up and use an Excel spreadsheet instead. Lone Wolf offered 6 months of support from the date of purchase, not installation, and we ended up with no support whatsoever. Support package is $250 or so a year. The manual we got with the software is amateurish and woefully incomplete. This is terrible software, with terrible customer service from a company that used to be really nice. It's disappointing. We're going back to a paper timesheet system, thanks to TimeWolf 3.0.

I have been using this on a Mac for years and was excited when this finally became available for Windows. The screenshot functionailty is very nice, but Cute FTP is a little bit better. Still, I love being able to hit a custom key sequence and have predefined text and/or actions performed. I have used this to create looping macros that process the entire contents of a spreadsheet. A must if you code html or other text intensive ascii applications. Tired of typing awkward key sequences in programming/coding? This is the app for you.
