Garmin US TOPO MicroSD Data Card for Garmin GPS Units Review

Garmin US TOPO MicroSD Data Card for Garmin GPS Units
Average Reviews:

I ordered this map, assuming it was based on 24k USGS maps. When it arrived, I noticed that in the lower corner of the package it said 100k. This means than one inch of the map is equal to 100,000 inches (1.57 miles). This compares to one inch of the 24k map being 0.37 miles. When you consider that the map is in 2 dimensions, this means that the 100k map has about 1/16th as much detail as the 24k map. When you are using a map for hiking, small scale is very important.
The 24k map is available on Amazon.com at the time of this review (12/2009) and is only about $10 more.

Mindjet MindManager Pro 7 Review

Mindjet MindManager Pro 7
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MindManager is one of the most useful software tools that I have. I use it constantly. It is very intuitive to use. It has a property that I really love about some software; if I'm not sure how to do a certain thing, I do what seems like it should work and most of the time it does. It's very friendly and obvious despite its sophistication. It's the kind of software that you can open up and just get to work with easily, but it also has a lot of depth and functionality to explore. I've been using MindManager for about seven years, including the various flavors of Microsoft Office integration and I have always been pleased with every new version of the software. You can output maps to many formats for sharing, collaborate on mind maps, and there's a really beautiful presentation mode that animates map navigation in an intelligent way for reviewing the information with others. The new version 7 has many improvements and enhancements over version 6, which I also loved. The implementation of the Microsoft Office styled ribbon tool bar is really well done, and the enhancements to mind map navigation and viewing are very helpful. I can very highly recommend this tool to anyone that needs to organize their thinking and planning.

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k Southwest Topographic Coverage of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (DVD) Review

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k Southwest Topographic Coverage of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
Route-able Roads and Trails
24K Topo Detail
Cons:
Dark Colors and Poor Contrast
Missing Trails
Trails aren't named
No BLM or State Lands
My comments are limited to Colorado and I'm comparing the Garmin maps to another 24K topo set by Above the Timber. On a recent 3-day backpack I used the Above the Timber maps 95% of the time, Garmin 5%, readability was the key. The good news, both map sets reside inside my Garmin GPS and switching is a breeze.
In my opinion a 24K Topo is a back country map used for foot, horse or other slow travel. This map set combines the excellent route-able Navteq highways and also route-able trails, that's slick. However due to an overly dark set of color choices, it's very difficult to see the trails to make an intelligent trip and/or route selection. Having the routing engine choose your route based on time or distance misses the human dynamic of most scenic. Not seen a routing engine that knows my scenic values . . . it'll happen someday.
The Garmin maps do not show BLM or state lands, a very big deal in Colorado. Also the trails lack either names and/or numbers, kind of like having a highway map w/o names or numbers, huh? Names and/or numbers give you valuable clues as to where you're going, which you verify with occasional sign posts.
To understand my colors and contrast comment, you'll have to view the attached Nuvi screenshots. They're fuzzy, the Amazon import did that and I'm not sure why.

Garmin MapSource City Navigator, North America DVD-ROM for Garmin StreetPilot GPS Units Review

Garmin MapSource City Navigator, North America DVD-ROM for Garmin StreetPilot GPS Units
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those of you who are deciding between City Navigator and City Select, buy Navigator. Here are reasons I find over various forum and news groups when I was making my buying decision.
Garmin has about 8 different levels of street classifications, all the way from pedestrian and animal pathways to multilane controlled access highways. For each roadway, there can be up to 60 invisible attributes, indicating the number of lanes, number of stop signs or traffic lights per mile, speed limits, presence of medians, time of day restrictions, heavy vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle restrictions, and so forth. Whether these 60 pieces of data are included in the software or used by the GPS for its calculations is part of the feature set of the 3 map packages offered by Garmin.
The basic level (Metroguide) does not support automatic route generation. (Note: Metroguide 4.01 and below use data from TeleAtlas. So Metroguide 4.01 is the best version you can find that won't need an unlock code to use the routing function on your Garmin)
The intermediate level (City Select) supports automatic route generation, but does not contain certain 'high end' road attributes such as truck restrictions, time of day restrictions, stop signs per mile, mid-road barrier awareness, and various other road attributes.
The highest level (City Navigator) contains all those things, and is targeted for Garmin's higher end GPS's. This can explain the why Navigator's map data are much larger than Select. I bought the Navigator for my 60Cx and within the same order I also bought a 1GB microSD memory chip. The Navigator has about 1.6 GB map data. With 1GB microSD, I can hold the map about half of the US (from west of IL all the way to the east coast)
As far as the quality of map detail, I'd say it's about the same as MS Streets & Trips 2006, which I use a lot on my PC. I haven't found any errors yet. None of them has the railroads of Chicago CTA train, which, interestingly, are in Garmin's US Topo map. All have Metra railroads though.
For the actually performance and accuracy of the map, you could refer to the reviews of other Garmin's models that are dedicatedly made for in-car use and preloaded with City Navigator NT, such as StreetPilot i5, c340, and Nuvi 350, etc. Navigator NT uses the same data and only differs in compression techniques. From what I read, it seems about 80% of the people are happy with the routing result. To my experiences, by only giving start and end waypoints, I couldn't get my preferable route for most of the time. I have to specify several additional waypoints to "manipulate" how the route is calculated. (All software and online maps are like this so I have no complaint here). I am not planning to heavily rely on the turn-by-turn routing feature.
This review is for version 7, BTW

A GPS navigator is only as good as the maps it employs. Enter MapSource City Navigator North America, which comes with fully routable maps of U.S., Canadian, and Puerto Rican metropolitan areas. The detailed maps offer the perfect way to get around almost any North American city (and some countrysides, too), while offering more than six million points of interest, including restaurants, bars, hotels, attractions, movie theaters, gas stations, shopping malls, campgrounds, and more. Need a good back-seat driver for your next city-hopping road trip? Look no further than this DVD-ROM.
Designed specifically for Garmin's StreetPilot III, StreetPilot 2610, and StreetPilot 2650 vehicle GPS navigators, the disc also boasts detailed information on highways, interstates, business roads, and residential roads, with such attributes as turn restrictions, roundabout guidance, speed categories, and other navigation details. In addition, each DVD offers automatic routing, so you can easily generate point-to-point routes in MapSource or on the compatible navigators. And thanks to the trip and waypoint management feature, you can also transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your Garmin GPS and PC.
Other details include supplemental coverage of Hawaii (using unverified government data) and an Unlock Wizard that guides you through the unlocking process (required when downloading data to a data card or Garmin GPS). As with all Garmin Products, City Navigator North America comes with a one-year warranty.
Important Note about Map Updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever need a map update, you can get one from Garmin at http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp. You will need to have your device's serial number ready.

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k West Topographic Coverage for California and Nevada (microSD/SD Card) Review

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k West Topographic Coverage for California and Nevada (microSD/SD Card)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received these topo-maps about two weeks ago and used them for road navigation (car) and trail navigation (MTB) so far on an etrex Vista HCx. My overall impression is mixed I have to admit.
From the start:
Installation is nice and easy, just pop in the micro-SD, power up the Garmin and the gadget will do the rest. In less than 5 minutes the map-set is completely configured and ready to go. I like this much better than the hassle with the DVD and transfer via USB cable which takes aeons. I made a backup of the SD card, yet I don't know if this will work the reverse way if I have to restore the SD. I recently read that this might cause problems but I don't have any experience with this.
Using it on the road it works well, fast calculation, precise directions. But this is definitely not what I bought it for.
So I took it to Lake Chabot (Anthony Chabot Regional Park) and... I was lost. Not a single one of the trails going round the lake was indicated. I rode into the golf course trying to get through somewhere, had to go back. Next through a nearby village, again, no trail indicated. Asked a resident and she told me where to get back on the trail. Fine. At least I was able to use the compass with the map to get back to my starting point. All in all: disappointing.
One week later up to Mission Peak. This time I was smarter and took a map of the Regional Preserve with me. And again, none of the trails indicated on the Garmin. Without the map I would have probably again been lost. Garmin and the map together worked well, but honestly saying the map alone would have been sufficient.
There are however some trails correctly indicated in parks and preserves which I can tell because I rode them earlier. But you'll better make sure that trails are displayed on the Garmin BEFORE you go there. Otherwise take a paper map with you. Well, I know you should always do this when hiking in the mountains where no official trails exist. But for park trails??
A downside of the SD card: you cannot use it on your PC for route planning, track or waypoint readout or whatever unless you have another map set on CD with the MapSource-SW. Think you can download MapSource from the Garmin homepage and activate it with the code of the SD-based maps? No way! Aaaaargh!!!
Summary: If you need a supplement of topo-maps when you already own MapSource it is probably alright because you can easily check on your PC and plan your trip before hitting the trail. Or you can check if there is any trail indicated at all. For the actual price it is still alright, but always make sure you have a paper-made backup with you if you are not 100 % sure that you can rely on the etrex.

Garmin TOPO 2004 Northeast U.S. Map microSD Card Review

Garmin TOPO 2004 Northeast U.S. Map microSD Card

My Garmin Oregon 450 saw the Topo chip and tried to read it but found it to be locked.
That is improbable, as the "map on a chip" series of Garmin maps are not "lockable."
The Garmin customer support was prompt, courteous but totally unhelpful. Their suggestions were worthless and they did not offer any remedy. I finally told them I was at wits end and would replace the Garmin with a Delorme PN-60W as soon as I could.
I have had the PN-60W for two weeks now, all those high rez Topo maps that cost a fortune if bought for a Garmin came with the Delorme PN-60W . and they work!

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k West Topographic Coverage for Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada (DVD) Review

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k West Topographic Coverage for Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada (DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll cut to the bottom line: As far as I can see, this is the best topographic mapping product available.
It's better than computer maps from DeLorme, National Geographic or other vendors, and much better than Garmin's earlier "MapSource" product. Maps displayed on one's PC or Mac (I've tried it on a Mac) are visually compelling, with very high resolution and near-perfect accuracy. There is also an excellent user interface -- you can browse, zoom, rotate or tilt to your heart's content. Even better, these high-resolution maps (unlike anything from other vendors) can be downloaded directly into your Garmin handheld. Most recent Garmin models are supported.
Today while out hiking I was astonished at the detail and resolution on my handheld -- 40 ft topo lines make a enormous difference when deciding whether the hill in front of you is a mountain or a molehill.
The only downside I have noticed is that there aren't very many hiking trails indicated on the maps. But it's always a good idea to obtain a local trail map if one is available. Drivable roads near where I live are all there, and as far as I can see there are no errors of labeling or placement. This is a big relief, because some other products I have seen are loaded with errors.
P.S. (7 Aug 2010). With some recent software fixes (both to my Garmin 60 Csx firmware, and also updates to the "BaseCamp" and "MapInstall" software, I have been able to download almost the entire mapset (California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington), except for a few panes in eastern Nevada, onto a single 4 Gbyte microSD HD card in my Garmin 60 Csx handheld. It works wonderfully. How did I ever live without it?

Garmin TOPO US 24K Northeast Map (DVD) Review

Garmin TOPO US 24K Northeast Map (DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This software does what it's supposed to do, i.e., it works with the Garmin Handheld GPS I bought. The streets and landmarks are accurate, as far as I can tell. And that's what I expected, from what I read from others' reviews of Garmin GPS units and Garmin software. However, it still doesn't do what I really want it to do, which is to allow me to superimpose hiking trails from either a paper map or a .pdf or .jpg file into the software and then trace the trails into the .gpx file. So, in addition to the money I shelled out for the GPS unit and the topo software, I also had to buy a third-party software to allow me to do exactly what I wanted. You'd think that a GPS unit intended for hiking would allow its buyer to do this task, but it doesn't.

BusinessMAP: Advanced Database Mapping and Territory Design Review

BusinessMAP: Advanced Database Mapping and Territory Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have never written a review of any product -- but BusinessMap is so poor that I am inclined to say something.
I am reviewing BusinessMap right now before making a decision to buy or not -- I will not be buying it.
The user interface on this product is like a product you will buy 10 years ago -- ESRI has failed dismally to upgrade the usability of this product - I just don't get how they can charge $350 for a poorly designed product - e.g., when one zooms in at the "street level" - they give you the main street numbers like 828 instead of the actual name of the street.
Moving around a map is so fustrating - it is not even remotely intuitive. They only allow you limited zoom in/out - e.g., there are fixed zoom levels and no slider bar to quickly go in/out.
Their support leaves a lot to be desired as well. You would have thought that their support people will know level 1 knowledge about the product. However, they cannot give you a straight answer.
The 1 positive about this product is the data under the map of businesses.
Overall - this product should be avoided.

AAA Map N' Go 7.0 Review

AAA Map N' Go 7.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought, installed, and used this product to lay out a long trip. This software quickly plotted the trip which would be over roads ranging from interstates to secondary roads. It has a very large points of interest database and produced an extensive report (maps of various scales and lists of points of interest) and features (personalization options, integration with GPS).
After about 5 hours of use, I found the product was not acceptable for my purposes and returned it. Some problems were:
1. When I tried to constrain portions of routes from interstate to secondary roads, the program would either show both routes or show the secondary route with a return to the secondary route start on the interstate. (Same behaviour if the road was a state vice interstate route.) Although an annoyance, this behaviour effectively added duplicate miles to the route total milage.
2. When points of interest are added, a bulk add to map feature is available. No delete from map is available. In one case I had added 208 points to the map, only to find that they all appeared in the final printout report. In order to remove the points, each had to be deleted individually - a large chore. In addition, some information apperared in the printout report of no value to me. I could find no way to delete this other data.
3. Documentation is marginal at best. Workarounds for the problems may have existed, but I could not find them in the documentation.
4. I am a AAA member so expected to see all AAA points of interest and accomodations. The information, when compared to AAA books, was incomplete.
5. The internet download features (road conditions) produced error messages but some data appeared.
The above shortfalls may not be important to all - but evaluate this mapping product carefully before committing to extensive planning.
