Adobe Captivate 4 Review

Adobe Captivate 4

I have been using this program full time since Aug 2009 developing thousands of slides, on numerous topics. The following is my ongoing journal. I foresee using this program for several more months before the product cycle ends...
Pros
1. Capturing a procedure is done fairly well. See item 12 below in the cons section. However, the output leaves a lot to be desired. If your presentation has a certain look and feel that you would like to match the raw capture is going to require editing - a lot of editing.
2. The on-board quiz/test generator is very easy to use and links to an LMS if one is setup to accept the data.
3. Setting up conditionals in the program for data-gathering and program manipulation is easy (provided you know what variables you would like to use and have a clear understanding of if...then statements).
4. Importing audio is easy. However, it must be edited and its final form before importing it to captivate. See items 7 and 19 in the cons section.
5. Rescaling of a project from one dimension to another, i.e. 800*600 to 1024*768 is very successful without distorting or compensating aspect ratio for the objects contained within.
6. The animation option is useful with the standard animations available, but they are limited and rather generic looking. Without an animation tool for creating/editing animations this feature is somewhat useful but limited in its applicability.
7. The ability to export the output in several output formats is a plus. However, the usefulness of these formats is condition specific.Cons
1. Captivate is operationally difficult to use.
2. Sometimes Captivate will not publish html/swf files with file names (title) exceeding more than a few characters - behavior is inconsistent. No Adobe documentation on file naming exists within the product manual or help files.
3. Over all object positioning and alignment in the development window is tedious. After custom alignment has been performed objects may move without prompt. Causes a great deal of rework.
4. Button object alignment using the text button feature appears normal in the development file but "may" be disjointed in the published version. Auto-align does not necessarily fix it.
5. Sometime hyperlinks to external files from within an .exe fail - inconsistent.
6. Sometimes hyperlinks revert to default file locations.
7. Open File or URL feature - This feature does not work as advertised. Sometimes designators to another file/url that are supposed to open in the current window fail. The current program just stalls and no action takes place. The only method I have been able to count on consistently is to designate that the file be opened in a new browser.
8. "Text to Speech" feature is to robotic sounding for final audio production.
9. The audio editing capabilities of Captivate are too rudimentary for audio editing.
10. Object orientation is limited to upright - no rotating of objects within the development environment.
11. Presentation Slide audio only appears on one time line. Additional audio must be created, removed, and reattached to other objects on the page if the audio is to be associated to an object event and not to timeline position.
12. The default TOC feature is clumsy unless you anchor it to a specific position.
13. Captured procedures require a great deal of editing and timing adjustment to be useful mid-stream in a presentation. Not as straight-forward as advertised.
14. Users must wait for captivate generated html pages (final output) to fully load before clicking any object of the page will stall and must be reloaded.
15. The global setting feature is great, unless you apply it.
16. The lock slide/object feature is slow to respond if using more than a few objects (20 or more) on a slide.
17. Roll-Over images, Roll-Over text, and the zoom area features are difficult to manage once more than a few instances are needed.
18. The over-all limit to 45-50 slides per presentation is a serious limitation for developing complex topics. Exceeding this causes many performance issues during and after development. Development file size that exceeds a few megabytes seems to cause the program to behave inconsistently. Source files are prone to crashing, and are generally unrecoverable.
19. Sometimes (often) saving a file fails but the program doesn't crash, it just closes. The Adobe Connect Pro user community recommends copying the slides to another file and save the new file.
20. Audio elements or queues sometimes have an inordinate amount of pops, static and clicks.
21. Hyper linking to files outside of a captivate file does not guarantee navigation back to the original file, and does not guarantee that the file will return to the last page viewed from the hyper-linked page.
22. The in-development review feature doesn't really show all the elements of a slide as it is intended. Review requires fully loading one of the simulated options or actually publishing the file to see if it functions as expected.
23. The Flash video option is useless without a flash generator/editing program to support it.
24. Sometimes, zooming into a slide when editing will render the file unusable.
25. Sometimes slide objects become unusable and must be replaced. If a slide object cannot be deleted the slide must be completely recreated.
26. Slide editing becomes increasingly sluggish as numerous elements are added to the slide.
27. Once an object has been created it may not be editable. Sometimes an object will accept a modification of settings, but not reflect those changes in the working or final version.
28. Font scripts in some text boxes are cut off by two or three pixels. The phenomenon seems to be largely absent if a text box is created and not adjusted for font size, color, or position. Of course there are adjustments for each of these properties and not being able to customize the properties without causing a flaw in the final product is in contradiction to the very existence of the property adjustment!
29. Button pause features do not necessarily pause slide audio!
30. Scripts and variables for custom interactions are very difficult to use. The scripting dialogue is inadequate, it does not behave predictably, and there is very little documentation on the topic available from either adobe or the public domain. Without this feature, complex navigation feedback is impossible.
31. The program locks up quite often. No matter whether you save often or not, just a few minutes of work in captivate is a lot of lost work. So, unless you're in the habit of saving after every single action you have performed, you will lose some work every time you use captivate.
32. When using the preview feature (F8) the program will occasionally stall. It's a waiting game. The program may restart after a few minutes (6-10) if you're lucky. This behavior is inconsistent. Wednesday Jan 6th around 9AM, program locked up for 15 minutes when running a preview. The same file had been being used for preview without any disruption in process prior to the malfunction. Same file acted normally until Friday the 8th when the program locked up again on a different file. This event started at 8:45AM. The condition is maintaining itself at 9:08AM. Program is now active again at 9:10 AM. Using the preview feature again at 10:05 AM. The program has stalled and is still inactive at 10:14 AM. At 10:18 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:24 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:30 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:35 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:41 the program is still inactive. Program cleared and started responding again at 10:46 AM. Tuesday, January 12, 2009: I started the F8 preview three times this morning and each of the two first times the preview opened, functioned normally and closed. I initiated a third time at 9:05 AM and it has stalled taking my system hostage for the last 18 minutes. The program released itself at 9:24 AM.
33. When adding an image to a slidelet the first attempt at configuring the new image in the slide may appear fuzzy or out of focus in the development window and the final output after publishing. Usually redoing the image add work will clear up the focus. While this isn't usually a crisis, it does require that the developer do the same task twice on a regular basis.
34. File/slide progress can be stilted from a non-identifiable cause. After developing numerous slides with similar elements one slide started pausing after .1 seconds, and remained in this mode for the entire progress of the slide. Nothing I could find with any single element of the slide had the property to allow for this type of behavior. The only way to get the slide to progress was to continually click the play button. It was possible to skip the slide by forcing advance using the customized buttons, but the only way to see the entire contents in the timeline for the slide was in .1 second increments - like watching a film one frame at a time. Resolution: created a whole new blank file, imported all existing slides and objects from offending file into new blank file. Problem solved...
35. Linking programs together is problematic. When developing a project I had decided to use the linking feature that would allow the end of one file to prompt the opening of another. But somewhere in the development process the feature stopped working - yes at one time it worked flawlessly. Now none of the files will...Read more›

Muvee Reveal Home Movies and Slideshow Win CD DVD Case Review

Muvee Reveal Home Movies and Slideshow Win CD DVD Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I not one to write a review, but this was so bad, I had to.
I purchased this as an upgrade using my HP discounted price (I had the trial version on my HP laptop when I bought it). I read the reviews but didn't listen. I spent many late evenings and many hours attempting to make a DVD of family pictures, video, and music only to have the program "freeze." After many headaches and heartaches, I learned if I didn't save my work in progress every few minutes, I lost everything as it "froze" my entire laptop. I repeatedly had to restart my laptop. After a few days of finally finishing the movie, I attempted to save the movie in HD format as the products claims...only for it to "freeze" again.
I also went out a purchased a stack of blank DVD disks and holders in an effort to make DVD movies. However, this also would "freeze." After another three days of trying and the program failing to make the DVD it promised, I attempted another product option and save the movie to my I-Tunes library. This was a last effort. This too failed.
During this entire time I sent approximately 5 emails requesting help and my problems to their customer service and by the last email, I requested a refund. They responded and took away my online access. I will be checking and making sure my credit card has been refunded.
I do not wish this frustration on anyone and hope you rethink this purchase. Good luck!

Everquest: Titanium Review

Everquest: Titanium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In some ways Everquest hasn't changed all that much, while in others it is a completely different game from what it was even a year ago. Some things about the game have been drastically improved (like tradeskills) and if you like a more quiet atmosphere on a game server; the population is a little lower these days as most of the kiddies have moved on to World of Warcraft, EQ2, etc.
If you have friends still playing the original Everquest, or are just looking for something to do to pass the time, EQ Titanium just might work for you.
This packaged game does include 10 of the expansions, more than enough to play with old buddies if you've taken a leave of absence like I did a little over a year ago. The price is the major factor for this unit, as the expansions individually do not come cheap.
Overall 4 stars for affordability, 4 stars for fun factor (There aren't as many people to play with, making the game just a bit slower paced for casual gamers.)

Omniplan Review

OMNI used to provide amazing applications at decent prices. Unfortunately, in spite of their beautiful interfaces their applications for the most part are not as good as the software offered by other companies.
In the case of Project Management software, there are at least a dozen Mac applications. Anyone serious about Project Management should first consider FastTrack Schedule, Merlin 2, iTaskX, etc.
After two years since its official release, OMNI Plan still lacks some basic features for Project Management (i.e., sharing resources across various projects is still not an option).

Borland C++ Builder 6 Pro Upgrade from Borland C++ 5 Review

Borland C++ Builder 6 Pro Upgrade from Borland C++ 5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Borland C++ builder, makes coding easy.
Let me explain. You have a simple console program. You have transferred your concept from paper to a program. The C++ Buider has console project that you can create, to slot your .cpp file in, and then compile. Easy!
But you ask: 'What if I want to create a GUI that goes with the program?
Choosing a project with SDI (Single document Interface) or MDI (Multiple document interface) does not cause your simple concept in the .cpp program to get lost in all that code that was generated in creating that GUI, which can work as a MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class) Project. (Again a project type within Borland C++ Builder sets that up).
The GUI in the SDI or MDI package is pre-build, and shows only the code that will modify the way the software you develop behaves and runs, and avoids showing all the internal files, if you are happy with them as they are. This means that you only have to debug your own code and the limited amount of code you modified !
Where can I go with Borland C++ Builder as supposed to Visual Basic. NET or Visual C++ .Net ?
Borland C++ Builder combines the user friendliness of Visual Basic.Net with the power of Visual C++ .Net language. Like in Visual Basic.Net WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), but C++ gives you the scope to make programs in the oldest and main developer language around. C++ builder also opens up the scope of creating applications in C++ that are not platform dependant, with the additional feature of making C applications, .dll files and Database driven applications, without generating much code to begin with. Happy Programming !
In addition Borland C++ Builder can be linked together with another persons C++ builder license and the program can be pooled and simultaneously debugged, compared to say Visual .Net packages, giving you a faster time to market, and makes it far easier to work to some sort of deadline.
Borland C++ Builder has stood the test of time. Its GUI's are fully integrated with any windows Operating System while it connects to all major Data vendors such as Oracle, Sql Server, MS Access, Informix, Sybase etc... .
If you are not short of resources, you can upgrade to an Enterprise Version of C++ Builder, which allows you to jump between Borland C++ Builder and Visual C++, (a more integrated approach to Windows Programming).

Jbuilder 2008 Professional Named New DVD Review

Jbuilder 2008 Professional Named New DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's as if the JBuilder 2008 developers took the approach that "if there's a plug-in we no longer have to provide it". And there is what appears to be a disregard for the pre-Eclipse users.
Starting with JBuilder 2007, the IDE is built on Eclipse, not the custom Java-based IDE found in prior versions. And that's the root of the problem.
I'm happy to blame part of this on my newbie status with Eclipse. But, I've been using JBuilder for years, from v4 to v2006. I have projects in JBuilder 2006 that can be edited, compiled, debugged, tested, and deployed as JAR files with all required libraries. In short, they (and the IDE environment) work just fine. But not in JBuilder 2008.
Claims of supporting prior JBuilder projects are inaccurate. Oh, it will import something that appears to be OK, but it won't run. To actually get it to run you have to dig through the hyper-complex Eclipse menus to find the execution directory, which has been helpfully reset to the Eclipse "workspace" instead of where the old JPX file set it.
Want a JAR file for deployment? Too bad, this ability has been removed. There's a non-intuitive File | Export | Java | JAR file "wizard", but in my test the perfectly operational, deployable pre-Eclipse app reports a compile failure, something about errors on the Build path. Thought that was all configured in the old JPX file? Too bad, that didn't make the "migration".
If I could get the JAR "wizard" to work I might still have problems. My research indicates that this method doesn't include any dependency libraries or external classes.
Want to actually include these dependencies in your JAR without the "wizard"? You are told that you can build an ANT script to do this for you. Never built an ANT script? Too bad, you're back to having to manually script something that has been automated in JBuilder since at least the start of the 21st century. JBuilder 2008 makes the "builder" in its name obsolete - you have to edit text scripts in the always easy XML format. Some folks love that hands-on flexibility, fine-tuning, get-exactly-what-you-want, build-it-yourself script. And some folks like to change their car's piston rings themselves, too. Others prefer to hire a mechanic since they don't have the time or desire to learn the intricacies of engine repair. That's what wizards are for, right? With JBuilder 2008 there is no choice, you have to rebuild the engine your own damn self.
Want to build a JAR file each time you build the project? Sorry, JAR building is now a manual event unless you now make the ANT script a build/JAR event instead of just JAR. Guess you can't use the built-in build process if you want the JAR at the same time and automatically. That was in JBuilder 2006. Guess nobody every really used it since it's gone now...
How about third party JAR builders? I tried one (the only one I found), that gives the helpful message "Chosen operation not currently available" when I run it. I suspect is an Eclipse plug-in support error, not the plug-in itself, but the vagueness doesn't help me decipher it.
As for the Eclipse IDE itself, at one point in the code editor pane I had TWO TABS OPEN FOR THE SAME FILE. Maybe this is a "feature" of Eclipse, but I can find no logical reason for it. One tab showed that it was unsaved, the other unchanged, both 99.99% identical. Could be something to do with the Eclipse "workspace", which insists in duplicating the carefully constructed pre-Eclipse directory environment for my app development and testing. So where are my actually code files? I haven't yet taken the time to find out which is the "real" file.
I know people who love Eclipse, and one guy tried to get me to use it a few years ago. I bailed on that attempt because it wanted me to totally abandon everything I knew in JBuilder. IMO Eclipse is "a jack of all trades, master of none."
I was hoping JBuilder 2008, with its JBuilder-plug-in would ease this learning curve. It might, but the loss of features from the pre-Eclipse versions is shocking.
Even minor ease-of-use stuff, like the Make and Rebuild Project buttons in JBuilder are gone. What happened to the status sounds - the "ding" with a good compile and a "boop" for failure? It's surprising how useful these are, and how much they are missed.
Distribution is foolish as well. CodeGear offers the trial Enterprise version and the free Turbo versions for download, both over 1gb in size. The two files are identical. The difference is the license key entered when launched. I wasted two days downloading the two versions after the Enterprise trial wouldn't register on their server. After the Turbo download I confirmed that both files were identical. Why two different downloads for the exact same 1gb+ file? There is no excuse.
JBuilder 2008 isn't an upgrade. If you are new to Java IDE's it may be acceptable, provided you have lots of time to write all your support ANT scripts to fill in the missing spots.
If you are a pre-Eclipse JBuilder user, stay far, far away from this "new" version. It's a major step backwards in both features and usefulness, and you will waste hours or days trying to shoehorn previously working Java apps into the Eclipse paradigm.
Want the last bit of salt in the wound? You can't get the pre-Eclipse versions anymore. Not ever the free ones. They've been scrubbed from the web. That's telling - they don't want you to even have the chance to move back to a truly functional version.

Corel Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus Review

Corel Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Video editing is not simple and projects place the most severe demands on your PC. When you move to HD, the demands increase exponentially. Ulead VideoStudio 11, like any editor, does have a learning curve, so be patient. Be certain to read the manual that comes with the box or download it from their site in pdf and take it with you on your laptop or pda.
If you are just starting out as a video editor, you have some surprises ahead because it is a tedious job; not only to learn, but to produce. It is far more difficult than working with photos. If you are just looking to produce a short DVD movie from your camera, it is easy. But, adding titles, overlays, and audio tracks does take time.
I have had several months experience comparing the Ulead VideoStudio to Pinnacle Studio Plus 11. I find the features and reliablity of the Ulead suite to be superior to any of the consumer level Pinnacle softwares. In fact, my experiences with Pinnacle have been less than satisfactory and their support is non-existent. I would stay far away.
What is particularly nice about this product is that when you install and register, it is fully functional. There are no gimmicks requiring you to activate other features. Also, it doesn't seem to overtax your processor. With Pinnacle, my processor fan was on high the entire time and I experienced numerous hangups and crashes with the CPU @ 100%. Ulead doesn't do that. It does, however, pause in an inactive mode for a while when performing certain tasks like splitting scenes from your movie. These pauses appear to be hangups and provide no "...please wait", but eventually it comes back. Get another cup of coffee. Will you experience crashes? Probably, but fewer.
While I do like Pinnacle's editor a lot, I spent three weeks editing a series of digitized 8mm family movies into a one hour project. Pinnacle would only produce 41 minutes of the project either to disk or DVD. That was a lot of wasted time and their "support" could not solve the problem. If only Ulead would import Pinnacle projects; that would be a coup.
So, this review seems to be mostly what I don't like about Pinnacle Studio Plus 11, but for the reader's satisfaction I moved from that product to Ulead VideoStudio 11 and found some welcome relief as well as full features. I did spend three wasted weeks with Pinnacle and that is a sore point with me. The moral to my story is start with Ulead VideoStudio and when you get good at it, perhaps move along to high-end products like Adobe. My jury is still out for a while on this product, but so far it looks good.
I hope this was helpful.
Amended...just finished my one hour movie using Ulead VideoStudio 11. Completed the project over three days without one computer hang up or crash. The program is great and deserves five stars.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional with MSDN Premium Review

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional with MSDN Premium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
VS Pro + MSDN Premium is pretty much the sweet-spot in Microsoft's development tool subscription offerings if you're a serious individual developer who wants access to all of the MS software in a dev/test environment.
It's important to note that Amazon only sells the "Retail" license option, and if you go to one of Microsoft's official resellers (via the list on the MSDN site) you can buy the same thing through their Open license program and get a two or three year version of the MSDN Premium subscription for just slightly more than the Retail one-year subscription price!
If you have an active MSDN Premium subscription when VS 2010 launches, you'll get upgraded to the next higher tier of subscription for free (according to the MSDN and VS 2010 site) which will get you more commercial-use licenses for things like Expression Studio 3, and more of the new VS 2010 tools. See those MS sites for details.
The MSDN Premium subscription gets you access to almost all of Microsoft's software offerings of operating systems (workstations and servers), SQL Server, and their application products. Note that:
These are licensed (with a few exceptions like one full copy of Office) for Development and Testing purposes only. So if you use an MSDN Windows 7 license on your home PC and you use it for playing a game or doing your taxes or email etc., then you're in violation of the license.
They're licensed for a single named individual's unlimited use (for dev and test), so you can set up 100 huge Windows Server systems if you want, but if you have a second developer or anyone else use any of them then you're in violation of the license. You can't just buy one subscription and share the software with all your programmers.
The licences you get are perpetual (unlike with some other Microsoft programs like Empower) and do not expire when your subscription runs out. So if your subscription does expire, you can still use the versions of VS and the other software you had at that time.
If you don't need all the server OS versions and the commercial-use copy of Office, then you might consider the cheaper MSDN subscription offers. If you just want to learn to develop on Microsoft systems, then you can do a lot with the free Express editions of Visual Studio C#, C++, VB, SQL Server, etc. and you may not need to spend any money at all.
If you're a member of a big team that wants to buy completely into the Microsoft way, then there are even more ridiculously expensive team versions of the software you can buy (but you have to pay for each developer separately as here).
If you're a company developing a software product for Windows, you can sign up *very* cheaply for up to two years for the Microsoft Empower program that gives you five MSDN subscriptions and other goodies I believe (though the licenses expire at the end of the term) if you commit to shipping a commercial product within that time.
But if you're a single serious developer who wants access to pretty much the full suite of development tools (minus the fancy high-end team stuff) and all the MS operating systems, server software, applications, and you need a new version of Office for yourself, then this is the one to buy (or talk your boss into), preferably via a two or three year Open license version since it's only slightly more expensive than this one-year Retail version.
G.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Standard Review

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Standard
Average Reviews:

I made a sea-change jump from VC++6.0 to Visual Studio 2008. I miss my old ClassWizard, but it only took a day or so to get familiar with the new methods. Probably the hardest thing to get used to is the change from Alt + E + I to launch Find-In-Files to using Ctrl + Shift + F. Even after weeks of using VS2008, I still do the old key combination.
The executables produced are great and the program functions reliably.
I would easily buy it again.

Better Homes and Gardens Landscaping and Deck Designer Review

Better Homes and Gardens Landscaping and Deck Designer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After extensive research, I eventually concluded that nothing really good existed in the low end consumer world of Landscape Design software, but I held out great hope that Better Homes and Gardens Landscaping and Deck Designer would be different.
So I took a chance and bought it from Amazon in April. and After some initial delays in actually getting the product, it was worth the wait! This software has blown me away after using it just two days now!!
This is the newest 7.x version of the landscaping modules first introduced in the BH&G 6.x home designed suite. The new version, just recently released in Mar/Apr 2005 by Chief Architect for BH&G is now standalond landscaping and deck design product. I suspect a 7.x home designer suite will eventually follow.
It is clear that this software has inherited many good things from its more professional rooted product line at Chief Architect.
This latest Landscape and Deck designer is really easy to use. It comes with a program CD and tutorial CD. After a quick and easy installation process ... I found myself able to use this software quite quickly.
This worked for me, since I despise reading confusing manuals and going through endless tutorials ... this software was easy enought to "figure out", with a little help from the tutorial videos and the help subsystem.
Each video clip on the tutorial CD is only 2-4 minutes in duration and shows how to do several useful things at a time. This "show and tell" approach to learning really worked for me. I watch a quick video -- then I go do it myself.
Unlike other tutorials, this one is quick and to the point. You won't spend more than 30-45 minutes to watch all of the videos included. I reccomend watching the first 1-3 videos, then go try the program yourself, then come back to the tutorial videos a finish them off after you have an initial grasp of the program.
There is also a more comprehensive help utility where you can look up individual topics by topic or search for things within the help system ... very good overall.
This program is easy to use and the 3D capabilities are very impressive. I had my new home' irregular shapes lot laid out and my new home located on that lot to within half foot precision in the first night of use. You almost fool yourself into thinking this program is more than just landscaping, but there are certainly limits, but reasonable ones.
I was zooming around my lot and house in 3D on the first night of use. The house roof wasn't exactly correct, but very close ... and thats where the landscaping program meets its limits ... you can't really make the house architechturally correct from top to bottom, but very accurate dimensionally and certainly good for planning your landscape and/or deck.
You can even take an actual picture and mask out the surrounding and paste that picture onto your 3D model of the house. That really makes the product yield realistic looking models. And I did that one side of the house on my first night of using it.
You can save pictures of your 3D drawing to files, you can even make a motion video tour of your landscape ideas. I was blown away by the capabilities. I can't wait to get home and see what else I can do.
I didn't get into the landscaping till day 2. By the end of Day 2, I had an initial landscape layout 80% completed. This program is very usable and probably could be used by a pro if they didn't have the budget for the $1000+ software out there.
I can't say enough good things about this software. It should be a top seller within 1 year, if others feel the same as I do. My hats off to BH&G and Chief Architect -- "home run" guys.

Your yard has always been good to you, giving you space to play with your kids, barbecue, and even sun-bathe on those lazy summer days. But now you're ready to bring some creative elegance and flair to your outdoor living. And you don't want to spend a mint just to have a landscape designer or consultant tell you what you want. If you know what you want, but you just need a little help turning that vision into reality, the Better Homes and Gardens Landscaping and Deck Designer software package is just for you. Better Homes and Gardens, the number one home and garden publisher, has partnered with leading software designer Chief Architect to bring you the Landscaping and Deck Designer. This program can help you transform your yard space into the landscape of your dreams, at a fraction of the cost of what a professional would charge. Using the software's fun, intuitive, and easy-to-use tools, you'll quickly be on the way toward becoming the envy of your neighborhood as your backyard barbecues in the sun turn into elegant moon-lit affairs on your new deck. With the Landscaping and Deck Designer, you don't need any design experience to plan your new landscaping, deck or patio areas. In a few easy steps, you'll be able to take care of site planning and cost estimating. The software will give you everything you need, from conception to planning to pricing.
With a huge library of over 1,200 plants at your disposal, you won't have to be stuck with the same old options the local home and garden shop offers. You can create beautiful landscaping with trees, shrubs, water features, and flowers of your own choosing. You can even import your digital photos and add your own custom landscaping features to your plans. To keep those plants thriving, you'll want to install a sprinkler system. The "sprinkler designer" feature can help you lay out sprinkler zones for optimal watering. A "furniture" feature allows you to project a wide variety of backdrops, objects, images, and textures onto your designs. It's never been easier to select the right patio furniture for your new deck or out by the swimming pool.
As you plan your new outdoor living area, the software can project 3D models of your plot and perimeter designs, giving you realistic images of what your designs will look like. A "terrain" feature can help you build fences and driveways, and the software will help you choose the best materials for the pathways you design through your gardens. You'll even have a special "fence tool" at your finger tips that will help you to choose from several different custom fence and gate styles.
In short, with the Landscaping and Deck Designer software at your fingertips, you can say good-bye to all those cookie-cutter yards that populate new developments. You can finally say hello to an outdoor living area that not only reflects your dreams and visions, but that also reflects how your outdoor area should be experienced, day in and day out, for years to come.

Microsoft Office Multi-Language Pack 2007 Review

Microsoft Office Multi-Language Pack 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think it's criminal that for the 2007 Office release Microsoft decided to bundle a tool that it had already offered individually for the past two issues, namely "Proofing Tools." So instead of paying a very reasonable and fair $40 for a 37+ language set of spelling and grammar checkers, I have to fork over $189.00 to get that plus something I really have no use for: interfaces in any of the 37 languages. Now, to give credit where credit is due, this product is absolutely amazing (albeit very niche - how many companies would really truly use this?) It is a remarkable product that is literally the best to date. So it earns the 5 stars I reluctantly give it. On the plus side, you can load this on as many machines as you want (as far as I can tell - there's no key).

Apple Final Cut Studio (Mac DVD) Review

Apple Final Cut Studio (Mac DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This rather heavy box contains Final Cut Pro 5, Soundtrack Pro, Motion 2, DVD Studio Pro 4 & Shake 4 and lots and lots of books (my kind of packaging). My old Final Cut Pro 4 books have lots of places bookmarked with stickies. I know that you can use the help menu on the computer but for those of us who do like to curl up with a good manual I was in heaven. The box has a total of eight books. Five of them are for Final Cut Pro the others are for Motion 2, Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro 4.
You have to invest both time and hard drive space for this software. I didn't install all of the extras that came in the box, but I did install quite a bit. To install all of the bells and whistles you would need about 41GB. I installed partial which used only 21GB which is still a hard drive hog.
While there were many great programs that came in the box I will only focus on Final Cut Pro 5.
What comes new for Final Cut Pro:
- "Multicamera Editing Using Multiclips". This allows you to group together multiple clips as separate angles and switch back and forth between the clips in real time. You can have up to 128 angles but only the first 16 can be played back in real time. This worked great for my multi-camera projects.
- You can now capture, edit and output native MPEG-2 HDV video plus 720p30, 720p60, 1080i60 & 1080i50 formats. Using supported USB or FireWire you can import and export native DV, DVCPRO & DVCPRO 50 footage from Panasonic P2 cards all without any generation loss.
- Apple Professional Application Integration has a new "Send to Menu" which allows you to select one or more clips in your project and open them in other Apple Pro applications such as Shake 4, Soundtrack Pro and Motion 2.
- You can embed Motion and LiveType projects directly into your Final Cut projects and edit them like any other clip in your timeline.
- You can also process audio in your Final Cut project using Soudtrack Pro by editing nondestructively or destructively using the Waveform Editor. When you make changes to Soundtrack audio that is embedded in a Final Cut project the audio in your Final Cut project is updated immediately.
- Interface Enhancements, allow you to now change the text display size in the Browser and Timeline. A new customized keyboard layout for real-time multicamera editing is also included. Plus new button bars for common workflows like Multiclip, Media Logging & Audio Editing.
- Rendering of "Still Images" & "Generator Performance" are now rendered to a "Constant Frames" folder which is stored in the current "Render Files" on your scratch disk which helps playback performance significantly.
- RT Extreme & Real-Time Playback: allows you to manually adjust the video quality (high, medium or low) and playback frame rate (full, half, quarter) to reduce CPU load so you can increase the number of simultaneous real-time effects.
Dynamic Real-Time Playback: Where Final Cut can automatically adjust video quality, frame rate or both on a frame-by-frame basis during playback thus allowing you to get the best real-time performance.
Limiting the Data Rate of Real-Time Playback: Is useful when you have more video streams that your hard disk is capable of playing back. This would be helpful to those who media is stored on a (SAN) storage area network or if your scratch disk has a low data rate, such as 4200 rpm which is the case with some PowerBooks and portable FireWire drives.
Unlimited Real-Time Playback Enhanced: If you choose the "Unlimited RT" option from the RT pop-menu in the Timeline you can preview more effects than previously available. The engine has been enhanced to support playback for effects that were previously unplayable, such as Motion & LiveType clips.
- Audio: MIDI Control Surface Support allows you to precisely control fader levels and pan settings simultaneously, instead of adjusting faders one at a time. You can control whether or not audio beeps are heard when unrendered audio tracks are played back.
- Log and Capture: You can now capture up to 24 audio channels at the same time. The Log & Capture window allows you to choose which audio channels you capture and whether audio channels are captured as mono channels or stereo pairs.
- Scratch Disks, Xsan & Network Support: The Directory & File Permission supports scratch disks on storage area networks such as Xsan. All UNIX file permissions are obeyed, allowing you to carefully control read & write access for multiple Final Cut Pro editing systems connected to the SAN.
Each time Final Cut is opened it searches any computers on your LAN for easy setups, plug-ins, window & keyboard layouts, button bars, etc... Which allows you to install settings and preset files in only one location and share them with all other editing systems on the network.
Capture Now no longer preallocates disk space so now media files grow as they are written and there is no longer a waiting period before Capture Now operation begins.
- Media Management: There is a faster reconnect feature to your media files. You can also reveal a clip's media file directly in the "Finder". The Media Manager can process the latest supported video formats, including DVCPRO, HD, HDV & IMX.
- Film Editing and Cinema Tools: Clips in Final Cut can be linked directly to a Cinema Tools database. So whenever you make changes to your Cinema Tools database you can update the associated clip in Final Cut.
You can import "Telecine Logs" directly into Final Cut and associate the clips with a Cinema Tools database that is created automatically. Final Cut Pro supports feet + frame units in the Timeline ruler and timecode fields throughout the application.
As with most programs today there are many ways of getting help. With Final Cut you can use the onscreen help menu or one of the 5 manuals that ships with the program. Personally I like to use the manuals.
The program itself has a bit of a learning curve. If you have used other editing programs before you will pick it up fairly quickly. I was a heavy PhotoShop user before I started using Final Cut and I noticed that many of the concepts are the same in how things are laid out and how there are many ways to get to the same point according to your work style.
The first book "Getting Started" is a great book for someone that has not used the program before. It gives great insight on the Post Production process and how to best keep your work flow efficient:
- Planning is the first thing you should do before you start shooting or at least before you start editing.
- Setting up your editing system should only have to happen once when you first start working on your project. For most systems today you just have to attach your video camera to your computer and you are ready. I have my system setup with my digital camera, connected to a dedicated TV which is attached to a stereo VCR/DVD combo.
- Logging, capturing & importing: This step is mostly style driven. Some people prefer to dump all of the material off their tapes onto their hard drive instead of going through the tape before hand and just "logging" in what you would like to have in your project. I usually go through my tapes in front of my TV with my laptop and get the time codes and make a description of the scene. Next "Capture" your footage. I just go to the in and out points and capture just the images I want. By just capturing what I want I save on hard drive space. You can also "Import" QuickTime movies, audio and graphics files, such as a music track from a CD, a still image, or a layered Photoshop file.
- Editing your project this also can vary according to your style. You can drag all of the clips into the Timeline then start cleaning them up and adding transitions or you can clean them up as you pull them in. Me I drag what I need into the Timeline, fine tune, add my music then add my transitions.
- Mixing & sweeting audio this is where you can clean up your dialogue (you know when the annoying plate clatter at that important point in a presentation), add sound effects, music or voiceover and make adjustments to the mixing levels to make a more harmonious sound to your audio. You can set Final Cut to default to Sound Track Pro for additional audio editing. I love working in Soundtrack Pro because I can view my project in a mini-screen as I add the music to the sections I want.
- Adding effects and titles can be very time consuming which is why it's a good idea to have most of your project laid out and almost done before you start adding the effects. You can change the speed of a clip, create a motion clip, adjust your colors and many other touches to give your project that polished feel of a professional.
- Outputting and distributing your project is your last step. Final Cut Pro provides you with a variety of output options. You can create a video tape or export it to a DVD authoring program such as DVD Studio Pro or another DVD program or you can make a mini movie and place it on the web.
When you open Final Cut for the first time you will be prompted to choose and "Easy Setup" which will determine how Final Cut works with your editing system. Go to "User Preferences" where there are six folder tabs to chose from. The first tab is "General" this is where you can setup the number of "Undo's" you would like (we all LOVE undo) how many "Recent Clips" you would like to be displayed, setup your "Real-time Audio mixes, how often you would like to have a copy "Auto Save" and many other things that affect the general feel of your workspace.

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14 Review

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third iteration of Pinnacle Studio, having owned versions 11 and 12 as well. I also own and have used several other video editing packages running from high to low end. At the top of the low end range, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection 14 comes in as a solid five-star performer - if you are willing to tolerate some minor stability issues. For reasons I don't pretend to understand, all video editing programs seem to have stability issues to one degree or another. Sometimes I think I may be part of the problem as I rush ahead performing other operations while the CPU is still rendering what I've already done. Other times, I just plain don't know: like Adobe Premiere Elements 7 simply not running on a Vista 32-bit system while it ran on a 64-bit version without problems. Given time, I could probably narrow down the issues, but I'm not that concerned. With Pinnacle, I am politely informed that the program has malfunctioned and given an option to close the program. Do that, restart Pinnacle and I'm back in business within a few seconds. Do frequent saves and the occasional crashes don't hurt.
Pinnacle runs about a 12 month cycle between new major releases. Frankly, every other release could probably be skipped because the improvements are not generally that earthshaking.
I am glad, however, that I upgraded to Version 14. There are three variants, each having a few more features than the others. Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection is the top of V14 line. The only drawback is that some of the bonus content, such as the SoundSoap program, are no longer included and earlier versions will not run in V14.
The good news is that the user interface has been simplified again. Pinnacle uses context-sensitive functions. In other words, double-clicking on a video clip brings up a different menu than you'd get by double-clicking on a still image. I've found the current interface to be somewhat more sensible and easier to use. There are three primary tabs: import media, edit and render output. Import gives you the choices you would expect, covering the waterfront from analog video to AVCHD. It's pretty simple to use with some good on the fly scene selection options. There are also options for directly importing from a digital camera, and interesting, a stop motion option that lets you build something resembling a flip book. Automatic scene detection is available for those who want it. Personally I find it more of a nuisance than a help.
The editing section has everything you could want in a solid low-end program. The user interface offers a storyboard or timeline or text listing formats. I am generally in the timeline view. There are scrubbers both in the movie preview window and at the bottom of the timeline, so reviewing video is an efficient procedure. Lots of keyboard shortcuts permit a speedy workflow. There are dozens of ordinary transitions and a couple of dozen other effects that will probably see little use. Plug-ins offer special features such as pan and zoom on still images, RGB color correction and so on. There is Picture-In-Picture and Chromakeying. Pinnacle provides its own custom music program called ScoreFitter, which as the name implies will generate music of a sort to fit the time of your clips. There are also some sound effects.
There are tracks for primary video, overlay video (which can also be used for dual camera shoots), titles, music, sound effects and voice overs. All in all, it's a nice, functional layout.
Pinnacle provides two competent, if not brilliant, titling programs. One creates static text which may be kerned and otherwise adjusted. It may be used to create DVD menus and the like. The other, called Motion Titler, allows more dynamic titles. Third-party titling programs run rings around it, but it is still quite usable for those who don't want exceptionally elaborate titles.
Pinnacle includes something they call "Montage Themes" which the user can customize with clips, photo and captions. They are pretty hokey, in my opinion, and not something I would use.
You can output to just about anything. DVD menu layouts are included and you can create your own. Almost all common codecs are included for video output, which is nice.
Overall, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection V14 is a very nice video editing application that I would rank at the top end of the low-end programs. It has everything the average hobbyist videographer and, in a way, functions are more accessible than in Adobe Premiere Elements. But there's a caveat: buy the printed manual if it isn't included with your Pinnacle package. The manual itself is somewhat difficult to deal with, but comes in extremely handy as a ready reference when you need it. I have several low-end video editing packages and Pinnacle is the one I find myself using most often. It offers, I think, good value for the money and an unusually good user interface.
Jerry

Thief II: The Metal Age

After trying the first mission in Thief 2:The Metal age I was dazzled. The developers at Ion Storm have truly lived up to the promise of a better sequel for we slobbering Thief fans. The original Thief was thought not to do well because of its twist on the first-person shooter. But when it hit the shelves it sold like hot cakes. To those of you run-and-gun fans this might not be the game for you. Thief 2 consists heavily on keeping out of sight and sticking to the shadows. You are not a war hero that can take some few thousand bullet wounds, you are no more than a common thief trying to hold your own. The game has changed a significantly since the original game. The characters in Thief 2 are much smoother and less blocky looking. The physics have also had a dramatic change with new fog effects and etc. The AI's intelligence has been increased as well. This game is fun to play and if you buy it, it will take some time to complete. It can be dificult at times so I suggest buying a strategy guide. I can't tell you how much fun it is when a nobleman offends you, and then you loot him for all he's worth. This is definetly one to get.

Soundtrack Review

Soundtrack is a great fun program don't get me wrong and upon first buying it I would have given it five stars but once I began to use it in the real world I came to find out that the loops are too modern and can get cheesy after a while. Some loops are just too short and not much can be done with them. I use soundtrack to make an background scores on many different kinds of projects. on some i get lucky and find great loops. i think a new search is needed so that you can narrow down what you are looking for rather than searching through hundreds of loop which causes them all to sound the same after a while. i think thier should be a larger range in category for the loops and make each genre very distinct since most can fit under a contemporary grouping. Basically soundtrack is a great program with lots of potential but it is version 1 so I'm looking foward to seeing all the improvments in versions to come. i would recommend buying this program because it is really great at just makeing music for fun or for small video's and it is easy to use.

If you are looking to get some information because you plan to build your own wine cellar then do not buy this. It is basically an advertisement for Vinotheque, a professional wine cellar builder. I would not mind if the video were free, but to charge anything for it is truly outrageous. Avoid this rip off at all costs.
