Thief II: The Metal Age Review

Thief II: The Metal Age
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After trying the first mission in Thief 2:The Metal age I was dazzled. The developers at Ion Storm have truly lived up to the promise of a better sequel for we slobbering Thief fans. The original Thief was thought not to do well because of its twist on the first-person shooter. But when it hit the shelves it sold like hot cakes. To those of you run-and-gun fans this might not be the game for you. Thief 2 consists heavily on keeping out of sight and sticking to the shadows. You are not a war hero that can take some few thousand bullet wounds, you are no more than a common thief trying to hold your own. The game has changed a significantly since the original game. The characters in Thief 2 are much smoother and less blocky looking. The physics have also had a dramatic change with new fog effects and etc. The AI's intelligence has been increased as well. This game is fun to play and if you buy it, it will take some time to complete. It can be dificult at times so I suggest buying a strategy guide. I can't tell you how much fun it is when a nobleman offends you, and then you loot him for all he's worth. This is definetly one to get.

F.E.A.R. Platinum Collection: The Complete Trilogy Review

F.E.A.R. Platinum Collection: The Complete Trilogy

This is one of the best shooters I've ever played, well, make that THREE of the best shooters I've ever played. Controls were responsive, overall it was quite "spooky," the only complaints I have were that at certain parts of each game there are "bottlenecks" that are frustratingly difficult to get past and result in destroying the fun of the game. The environments are also very similar for all three games, nothing really exotic and fairly repetitive. The storyline is definitely A+ though. I highly recommend this bundle!

Thief Gold (small box version) Review

Thief Gold (small box version)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is one of the original stealth action games. It is entertaining and completely immersive. If you like first-person shoot-em-up games... don't play Thief. Well, do play Thief, because it's great, but it's a completely different experience.
Don't come to Thief hoping to go slashing merrily towards your goal. Oftentimes slashing your way towards any goal is a sure-fire way to fail a mission. (It's called Thief, not Murderer) The levels set out challenges that have to be met with subtlety and innovation, which, personally, is more satisfying to me. It's not quite as interactive as Thief 3, where you can change the environment to snare enemies, but, as the game that started it all, it is just as entertaining.
The levels in Thief Gold give you a variety of goals, and there are multiple strategies for playing. This game spawned its own following with different kinds of players, and a community of fans which is still operating today. This game is simply a lot of fun, and the Gold version gives you even more levels and challenges.
As far as the ages that this game is appropriate for, I'd say that the level is fairly mature. It's not too gory, just because the graphics are old, but this doesn't take away from the experience, and you still have to deal with zombies, blood splatters, and cinematics which are animated well, and with a distinctive style not seen in modern games. (someone referenced the eye-popping scene, it's not too graphic, and doesn't show much, but it could be disturbing for young-uns)

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point Review

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Where to start, I was expecting much from the addon to the great game FEAR. Instead you get little. They reused much of the same textures, dark area's, and characters from the original.
No new characters to speak off,non exsistent story line even weaker than the first. You will have a hard time finding much new here.
The game is far too short, you can finish in about 3-5 hours, and its too easy, even on the hardest setting.Ohh and to top it off it adds nothing to multiplayer at all, no new levels, characters or weapons, not even a new mode.
If you never bought the original, you can have the multiplayer for free! Truly there is no reason to pick this up at all. The game is still fun in the way the first game was fun, but feels less like an expansion and more like the last few levels they left out of the game :(.
Not worth 30 dollars in anyway shape or form. Best to wait and buy in the bargin bin for 10 dollars or less. In other words don't support developers who put this kind of "stuff" out at almost full game price, its a rippoff at best.
We need to Show big companies Like EA, Activision, and Vivendi that its not alright to rip us off, the only thing they understand is not buying their products. I finished this the first night I bought it in 3.5 hours of none too exciting gameplay. Then you can uninstall and use as a coaster, an expensive coaster.

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate Review

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lately, the are a number of novels sporting ROBERT LUDLUM's name up front - yet they are ghostwritten by in-stable-writers of his publisher. A good effort in their part, yet, of course, they feel nothing like a LUDLUM's novel.
SIERRA, the legal owner of the FEAR franchise, is putting out this official (stand alone) expansion - whilst, MONOLITH, the original team that actually created FEAR, has announced its own upcoming expansion named PROJECT ORIGIN.
As with ghostwritten books, the in-house elves do not feel confident to create anything new and instead take baby-steps around the original story. Thus, the PERSEUS MANDATE is actually the same story as the original FEAR - seen from the perspective of a different F.E.A.R. agent on a timeline that runs parallel to the original.
To make this idea more palatable, a new set of weapons and gadgets are available (you will love the UV scope that helps targeting in foggy rooms) and the set of enemies is refreshed with some new additions. Paxton Fettel, the original villain gets replaced by, well, Perseus (whose Mandate we are concerned with), Alma (the scary little grungy girl) only makes fleeing appearances - and Shade fits the shoes of the scariest spectral beast around.
The graphics, although somewhat improved, do not veer far from the original - which may not be a bad thing, since they were quite good, yet somewhat dated today. What has clearly improved is the sound: PERSEUS MANDATE may not be as visually scary as the original but it sure is aurally scary!
All in all, a slightly improved game with a clearly weaker story.
The cookie-cutter at work...

Thief Bundle: Thief 1 and 2 Review

Thief Bundle: Thief 1 and 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
normally, i use a mac, but when i bought my windows game box, i had to buy some food for it. i ordered, with low expectations, a whole bunch of [cheap games] including these old thief games. what i got absolutely astounded me. let me start by saying i dont play internet games, and the military games so much in vogue dont interest me (the real history is so much more fascinating). with thief, here are two games that are "shooters" where you dont have to kill anyone. as a matter of fact, the higher levels of expertise require that you dont. in this way, this game reminds me of two of the best ever, deus ex and nolf.
it is often easier to kill the people who are obstructing you in your larcenous quests, but that makes the games easier . when i am stealing, all these characters attempt to interfere. killing them allows the player to steal in a stress free environment, but a good thief shouldnt kill. the difficulty level depends not on the strength of opponents, but on the number of tasks and objectives you have to accomplish. on expert difficulty, you must find many hidden relics, gather more loot, kill fewer people, all while getting less available health. health is very uncommon, so you have to go through this whole game taking almost no hits (no convenient medikits) which adds considerably to the difficulty. many reloads are required.
thief 1 is an old game, with rather crude graphics. dont let this fool you. it is dark, creepy, and very difficult. for outright fear, it is better than Undying, and there are several levels that are as hard as any video game (bonehoard, haunted cathedral, and return to the cathedral). you have to contend with haunts, zombies, burricks (overgrown frogs with bad breath), bugmen, and scissorhands. this is video gaming at its best. thief 2 is more refined. the bad guys are more plausible, though not as scary, and the combination of middle ages setting with modern technology (electricity) can be quite amusing. the police station which you must infiltrate has all the modern accoutrements despite its medieval location. the shooting range has the electric target track runners, but with archery targets. the levels are HUGE, particularly citibank, party, and soulforge.
two complaints only: the two game set does not contain the "gold" version, typical of windows reissues, and its not available for mac. games of this quality should be.
so, if youre looking for games which are exciting, challenging, and give a sense of accomplishment, and at the same time have a cheap price, forget the fact that these are old and look at the gameplay and the level design. they have not been surpassed.

Project IGI: I'm Going In Review

Project IGI: I'm Going In
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Project IGI' is a cross between 'Goldeneye', 'Metal Gear Solid' and 'Delta Force'. As an ex-SAS, ex joyrider called David Llewelyn Jones (despite the name, he doesn't appear to be Welsh) you run around a series of modern battlefields, infiltrating installations, avoiding cameras and shooting things. In very nice 3D, with some huge landscapes that you can explore, if you feel like it. Like 'Delta Force', it's weighted towards action, and although a few well-placed shots finish off the bad guys, you are slightly less mortal. Nonetheless, you can be stealthy, and quite often it's much easier to avoid tripping the alarms (which you can turn off - best of all, you can just shoot the cameras). The graphics are attractive, if a little sparce. As in the song by The Who, you can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles, and some of the detail is superb - your weapons look and sound authentic, the explosions and ricocheting bullets are alarming, and you can't hide behind impenetrable cardboard boxes, because they aren't. After a while you notice that the graphics are sometimes quite spartan, and although the textures are high-quality, the interiors are often extremely bland. As with 'Delta Force', the bad guys seem to have built their bases from mass-produced kits, as individual buildings are copied and pasted verbatim from mission to mission, with only the furniture moved around to differentiate. There's some excellent modern James Bond-esque music, and the game itself is often extremely good fun - like 'Delta Force', but done well. But not that well. The plot tries for a James Bond ambience, but even with only 14 missions our hero seems to spend a lot of time escaping, being caught, and escaping again. The voice acting is very bad, too - our hero sounds like an enthusiastic primary school teacher, whilst his lovely assistant Anya has a California valley-girl accent that seems more Playboy bunny than government employee. I kept expecting her to use the word doofus, but she doesn't. Meanwhile, the supposedly Eastern European guards shout 'Hey you' and 'Stop' in English. The morality seems a bit iffy, too - you're basically a hired killer, and the bad guys aren't really bad guys, they're just guards in foreign, but non-hostile, military bases. It's as if you were a French soldier set down in Scotland, shooting down Scottish security guards. And yet, these are minor things. There are three major points that bedevil it - you can't save during a mission, at all; the missions are highly linear and scripted, in such a way that you absolutely have to play the mission several times over before you can complete it; and it's just not big enough. The decision not to include the ability to save a game is a brave one, shared with 'Aliens vs Predator'. The idea is to increase the tension by not allowing you to chicken out and hit F6 to quicksave, as with most other first-person shooters since 'Doom' (it's hard to remember nowadays, but until 'Doom' action games rarely let you save). It doesn't really work in 'Project IGI' - the size of some of the later missions, coupled with the fact that death is sometimes instant and unexpected, make it highly irritating. 'AvP' was eventually patched so that you could save a maximum of three times during a mission - a much better system. And the scripting is highly annoying. This is one of those games where you can explore an area and find it free of baddies but, if you press a switch, talk to somebody, or step over an invisible boundary, suddenly a truck-full of soldiers materialises from thin air. You can never really predict or guard against this, and quite often the missions become memory tests. One mission in which you have to escort a Russian businessman is particularly frustrating, and more than once I felt like burning the CD and posting it back to Eidos with a nasty letter. In general, the bits where you have to escort people (thankfully, only twice does this horrible game element appear) are dreadful - you have no way of knowing where they are, and they usually just stand there, waiting to be shot. And worst of all, it's too small. It has no fewer missions than 'Hidden and Dangerous', but a handful of them are extremely easy, and you'll finish them in no time. There is absolutely no replay value, either - the linear missions mean that once you've completed them, there's nothing to see if you play them again. And there's no multiplayer option at all. Fourteen missions and that's your lot. You'll play it for two or three days, get annoyed during the final, immensely frustrating, mission, and never play it ever again.

Graphics : Sweet. Gameplay : difficult at first, but once you understand the control scheme, you quickly get the hang of the rest. Incredible particle effects. Very well done music. Replayability : moderate to none. That's the only downside. The game has good length, and a fun idea as a plotline. But, there are not too many twists and turns plotwise, so that pulls quite a bit away from re-playability. This ran well with the minimum specs on my system : AMD XP 2800 -- 512 MG DDR RAM -- 128 MG GeFORCE 4 5600. For the sheer shooting power of the game, i would recommend it. But, don't expect extreme depth in the gameplay. Just a good bit of fun.

Thief: The Dark Project Review

Thief: The Dark Project
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have never really been a fan of the super gory violent first person games. Perhaps its because I'm not that great at them. Anyway, I bought thief knowing it would be different from those games. How different, I had yet to find out. Perhaps the best example of these differences is that on the "expert" level of difficulty, one of the requirements is that you DON'T kill people. This makes the game much more difficult, but also rewarding. I really liked everything about thief except, perhaps, the graphics (which I still thought were okay). First, the concept of it is brilliant. While I understand that stealing is wrong, I have come to realize the exhilaration of it. It's not the fact that you found and stole something that is awesome; its the odds that you overcame to retrieve it. This is a very addictive game.
Plot/Story: I was impressed with the storyline. You are constantly being surprised by things that don't go the way they're supposed to, and you never knew what's going to happen next. There's really no way you would be able to predict the ending until you get to the last couple levels.
Gameplay: You are constantly being challenged by the environment and enemies. While the human enemies could be smarter at times, generally, they present enough challenge. I was very happy with the Normal/Hard/Expert level choices. Even before I had beat the game on normal, I found myself going back to earlier levels and playing them on Hard or Expert level. Also, you will learn to rely less on maps, and more on visual familiarity with the environment (and a compass, if you want). This is because the maps fit the technology level of the imaginary time period of the game: simple and basic. No fancy arrows tell you where you are. One thing that really frustrated me was how you have to reload the level every time you want to go back to a save point. This is especially common in this game since so many things can go wrong. I know other games have overcome this obstacle, and wish this one would have.
Graphics: While the graphics are functional, and sometimes entertaining, the complex environments deserve better. Thief is the kind of game where there is a lot of atmosphere; and I feel this could have been enhanced with better graphics. Perhaps the most dissapointing would be the cutscenes. The're essentially slideshows with a minimal amount of animation. Plus the resolution is bad. Maybe this was a low-budget project or something. I don't really care all that much. I just know that they could have done better and should do better in the future.
Sound: Unlike a lot of games, the sound is essential to surviving and succeeding in Thief. It helps to have nice speakers or nice headphones. I have used big headphones that cover the ears, and its an engrossing experience.
So, in conclusion, besides a few bickers of mine, I thought it was an exceptional game, and based on the price, should be bought by anyone with an interest in it.

As Garrett, a cynical and world-weary master thief, you must make use of stealth and intellect to complete your missions. You live in an ancient city of a fictional past, where magic and primitive technology coexist uneasily. Your victims are the city's corrupt and privileged nobility, whose wealth is at your disposal as long as their guards don't see you, at least not until it is too late. Your dark heroics earn you the attention of a mysterious patron who offers you a fortune if you can retrieve an enormous gemstone with a notorious reputation. But it soon becomes clear that more is at stake than a comfortable retirement. Your efforts trigger a conflict between veiled powers who compete to pull your strings. You'll need all your strength and wits to discover the truth and escape from the web of intrigue and deception spun around you. Garrett's adventures will take you through moonlit city streets, guarded mansions, secure prisons, blazing factories, haunted cathedrals, abandoned ruins, grim catacombs, subterranean lost cities, and even into strange, distant realms where the laws of this earth no longer apply.

The Sum of All Fears Review

The Sum of All Fears
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you have played Ghost Recon you have pretty much played The Sum of all Fears. It uses the same graphics engine that gives GR it's fantastic looks and it works very well in the close quarters combat missions in SOAF. The interface is a bit stiff but assigning your two teammates to clear (take out any opponents in a room), flash-bang or grenade a room is a very nice touch. It gives you a nice mix of different weapons kits from basic silenced Mp5's to more heavy hardware like M16's w/grenade lauchers and modified M4 carbines and some nice sniper kits. The maps and missions are well presented and are great to play. Multiplayer gameplay is also tense and fun. Think of this game as Rainbow Six: Rouge Spear meets Ghost Recon and you have Sum of All Fears. If you are a Ghost Recon player you will love Sum of all Fears. O.K. the bad, because this game is not all good. The missions are somewhat easy even on the "Hard" setting. The uniforms of the characters do not change only their kits do. Your teammates can be quite stupid at times and you sometimes have to look out for them. Only 11 full missions but if you play the "Firefight" options in the Multiplayer maps it adds more replay value. It has VERY little relation to the movie or book by the same name. No this game is not Soldier of Fortune II, but nor was it meant to be. It seams like it was a rushed release in order to make it out along wth the movie BUT over all this game is a great even if it is your first FPS game or if yo are a regular FPS gamer.

War Front: Turning Point Review

War Front: Turning Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a RTS that is fun to play and is guaranteed to get your adrenalin pumping once you get into the action. It has 3 different difficulty settings, (easy, normal and hard) and it is playable as a single person or as a multiplayer; this review is of the single player game.
The game setting is the European/Eastern Asia theater during World War 2; however the game throws in a few "what if" scenarios and a few futuristic weapons to make the game a little different that your normal WW2 game.
As with any game there are positives and negatives...let me explain
The Pros:
1.)Non linear game play; although you must complete certain objectives to complete a mission, how and in what order you do it is completely up to you. You can also play the game from either the American or German point of view (with completely different scenarios). This gives the game a large degree of replayability
2.)Your three main "heroes" of this game have upgradeable skills, giving them special talents to help you in certain situations. Some of these skill are passive (in effect all the time) and some are active (only begin when you click on an icon and only last a specific period of time)
3.)Some buildings, and airports have upgrades available once specific conditions have be achieved.
4.)Easy save game at any point. (recommended to do it often)
5.)Grouping of infantry and vehicles to allow you to facilitate deployment of your troops.
6.)Production buildings and airports can be set up to continually produce the same group of units that you've instructed; this allows you to continue to make tanks, infantry and airplanes while you "try" to concentrate on running the war effort.(not as easy as you'd think)
7.)Some "hot keys" are available to facilitate commands to certain units.
8.)You have some limited amount of time to set up your forces when the mission starts, then it is intense, nonstop action from there to the end of a mission.
9.)Use of the "pause" button to stop all the action; however, you can still look anywhere on the map to assess what needs your most urgent attention.
The Cons:
1.)Initially, you can easily feel overwhelmed and become frustrated with this game; trying to complete mission objectives while being continually attacked on several different fronts at the same time. The action at times is so hectic it borders on chaotic; it's just hard to know which major problem to try to fix first.
2.)The instructional manual, although complete, is very basic and simplistic to say the least, when compared to the scope of activity you are going to have to deal with in the missions.
3.)The tutorial covers only very basic strategies, or so it would seem, (see "suggestions" below) in its instruction, and hardly prepares you for what's to come. Learning how to use the tutorial to its full potential will help immensely.
4.)I could not get the game to install initially; after an hour of fiddling, I eventually went to the web site to the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section only to discover that the game may not install with an active firewall; once I'd disabled my firewall, it installed without any problem. I just can't understand why a potential problem such as this would not be mentioned in the instruction booklet.
Suggestions:
1.The tutorial is deeper and more useful than it initially appears. On the section on fighting, you should take your time to learn how to use your buildings to produce infantry and vehicles that have the same group number (for example you might have a combination of 20 infantry and tanks in group No.1 and a group of 6 fighter planes and bombers in group 2, etc.) This will allow you to send an entire group (instead of individual units) off to battle with one or two mouse clicks.
2.In the tutorial on turrets and airfields, there is another group of enemies that are not in obvious view on the map; if you look for them with a plane you'll find them, then you'll have a real battle to practice on the tutorial session. Of all the help available on learning how to play this game, this was the most useful.
3."loop" you building units to continually produce infantry, airplanes and tanks. You will not have time to do this once the action starts.
4.)use the "pause" button to get time to think (when all is chaos around you). Although you can't make any changes during "pause" you can use the time to determine what needs to be done first once you "unpause" the game.
A great game, with a huge and somewhat difficult learning curve; however once you've mastered the basic game controls it's a real blast. 5 Stars.R. Nicholson
