QuickBooks Point of Sale: Basic V7.0 w/Hardware Review

QuickBooks Point of Sale: Basic V7.0 w/Hardware

I found that Quickbooks Point of Sale is extremely versitile. I have used the software for both a retail store and a resturaunt. The software worked flawlessly. It was a huge help in helping me realize the state of my business. Having both sales and inventory information in one place helps you to realize key trends and stock your store accordingly.
I have been using Quickbooks Point of Sale since it's begining. Allowing me to see see the evolution of the product as a result. I have learned that Intuit is paying attention to the needs of small business. For example the main enhancement between version 7 and 6 is the incorporation of eccommerce principals, which I feel is an emerging trend for small business. The new changes help bring small business up to speed with larger businesses.
Additionally you will find that Intuit will also offer accessories that work seamlessly with the software. This is a huge benefit that I have yet to find in anyother point of sale program.

QuickBooks Point Of Sale: Basic Version 8.0 Review

QuickBooks Point Of Sale: Basic Version 8.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I helped my wife set up this POS software for her retail store. We wanted barcoded inventory control and good integration with QuickBooks Pro (financial).
Despite the fact that we have a graduate degree in computer science, and experience with accounting, we spent many long nights fixing problems and bugs in this software. Our expectations were pretty low based on reviews we had read--but this software has been much worse.
To add insult to injury, you're constantly given pop-up ads trying to sell you additional Intuit features. Less insulting is the well known fact that some important features are disabled in the Basic software and you need to upgrade to Pro to do things like editing the layout of price tags.
If the software crashes on you (and I personally guarantee it will), and you call support, they will tell you you need to buy a support contract. When your system is down due to their incompetence, this is a big insult.
The software would be workable if it was stable. Intuit needs to halt adding new features to this software, hire a better software team, and just spend some time stabilizing the product. It is to flaky for production use. Here are maybe half of the bugs we have ran in to:
- Rename company file, rename back, deletes all your backups
- End of day Z-out and drawer count. choose Custom time period, choose time. That time becomes default for any subsequent "Today" Z-out reports. Drawer is off. If you run "Custom" again with correct time and date (today, 12-12), it then ignores the deposit so your drawer is off again next time you do a regular "Today" z-out drawer count.
- Warning about QBF has changed to new company file is not dependable--- we got our warning a week later after we noticed it ourselves and used QBF to compare the two files (which must have triggered the late warning--which was then triggered multiple times, clicking OK 3 times in a row still did not allow end of day financial data exchange to proceed--had to cancel and try again).
- Popup dialog "Problem: some of your changes are still being updated. Solution: Please wait for the dashboard to complete the update and try again". Cannot close POS, thus cannot reboot cleanly. May need to kill process.
- Credit card processing stopped working suddenly. multiple days of many hour calls with SW tech support in India did not resolve problems. Staff left our computer firewalls open, changed our company file and generally messed things up. Reconfigured all windows networking, killed POS SW, rebooted, and days later it started working again but cut out once and required another reboot.
- When entering credit card information manually, sometimes you can enter a voice auth. number and bypass network authentication, other times you cannot. Seems to depend on which order you click on fields in the GUI but it really works only randomly.

Been using Quicken for years, and this is by far the worst version ever. On my 2GHz PC I can see the screen redrawing because of all the fancy stuff they are trying to do with the interface - stuff that BTW adds little value to the overall application. It's a total dog!
I'd stick with the 2006 version if I had the opportunity to go back. Unfortunately now that I've upgraded I believe I'm stuck.

Quicken Rental Property Manager 2.0 Review

Quicken Rental Property Manager 2.0
Average Reviews:

This will be a great piece of software one day. It is not yet. It is still essentially a "beta" version with many "known issues" (i.e. flaws and things that don't work) that you don't find out about until you visit Intuit's help site. I'm disappointed that Intuit would release a software package like this and charge full price when it still clearly needs a lot of work. The basic functionality is there, but I broke it four different ways just using it the first night. Like I said, when they get all the bugs ironed out, it will be a great piece of software. As of now, I feel disappointed and ripped off that they are charging full price for a prototype that doesn't work completely.

Overall a robust and reliable product, but:
Expect to spend another couple hundred dollars a year for support, either on a plan or at ~$50 per call.
Doesn't run on Linux. That's a huge downfall for a business product. If you want the stability of running on a dedicated Windows server instead of a user machine, it'll cost you an additional user license for the server in addition to each user.

Church Office Pro (4 CD-ROM) Review

Church Office Pro (4 CD-ROM)
Average Reviews:

I find this very useful at church, it makes a lot of the things I used to do manually simple and quick, and changes are quick too.
One thing is missing, which my daughter gave me and works great. OpenOffice.org, which is like Microsoft Office and opens all of my Word documents but is absolutely free. So our church council had no trouble approving it!
So yes, get this product, and get OpenOffice.org (here on Amazon, the OpenOffice.org Resource Kit book and CD), and you will have an excellent set of software.

QuickBooks Cash Register Plus 2010 Review

QuickBooks Cash Register Plus 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me first state that I reviewed and bought this product, set up a merchant account through Intuit, and purchased the hardware they recommend. I am returning everything. Here is what happened and why I ditched this pile of product and services:
- you are mandated to buy any hardware directly from Intuit. Intuit does not indicate the make and model of the required hardware and if you do happen to find out the make and model and shop around for pricing you can forget it. Intuit will not provide any support if you don't purchase directly from them, thereby dictating where you purchase your hardware. If they want to do that and gurantee the lowest price then fine, but they do not.
- the product does NOT work on Windows 7 on a 64-bit computer, which is mostly what is sold if you buy a computer these days. I asked customer support what options I had and was sent in circles. Finally a sales rep called and the best recommendation was do purchase the Point of Sale product for about $700.00 versus the $99.00 I paid for Cash Register plus.
- Intuit tries to sell the product for $199.99. With a little looking you can find it for $99.99. It's insulting to customers to be so out of line with market prices and makes one very suspicious of why Intuit insists that you purchase hardware from them.
- Most credit card merchant services companies give you breaks and deals on the rates and hardware. Intuit charged me just under $300 for a credit card reader with a pin pad. I found a merchant service provider who is providing lower rates, providing a card reader and pin pad at no cost, and is sending someone over to install and test it all. Intuit has higher rates, charges for hardware through their dictated sales channel, and the you get to install it and test it all. Are we having fun yet?
- When talking to Intuit sales on the phone they said the product "is really a glorified cash register". Oh really? I liked being able to provide customers itemized receipts and have all my data ready to export to our accountants Quickbooks file.
- each customer service rep from Intuit was not interested in receiving my customer feedback. The last one that called didn't even advise I could return the product, which I can, but clearly wanted to run from the situation.
- if you do choose to self-inflict this product and service upon yourself you will be held hostage to the credit card processing service chosen by Intuit (there is just one). If you find better service or rates elsewhere you are out of luck. You cannot configure Cash Register Plus to use another service. The norm is to be able to reprogram a terminal to use whatever service you want or configure your software to do the same.
All one can conclude is that Intuit just does not understand this business and customers as well, does not manage pricing and sales channels so we customers have choices, and worse yet their customer support is uninterested in solving customer challenges.
I had hoped that this product would be in the league of Quickbooks, but it has nothing in common in terms of quality.

Quicken Home Inventory Manager Review

Quicken Home Inventory Manager
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Long time-application user writing:
Home Inventory Manager by Quicken is the slowest and most awkward program I have ever used -- or tired to use. Most annoying is its non-intuitive approach to data entry, lack of flexibility, awarkward image importing, and slow, slow performance and screen-redraws. It seems as though some novice ported it from an old Cobol program routine.
Quicken might want to hang its head with shame; it does not belong in the QUICKen family, or on your PC.

Quicken Personal Finances Deluxe 2007 Review

Quicken Personal Finances Deluxe 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just migrated from MS Money 2007. I've been a user since 2002 (versions 2002 & 2004). I was very happy with Money 2004, but was forced to upgrade to 2007 to continue online services. Some features that were important to me were removed (bill multi-selection with immediate account balance projection and Money Express as a bill reminder). So I decided to finally make the jump to Quicken.
The bad: My first impression, after coming from Money's clean interface, is the busy clutter of the home page. Money didn't use windows (how ironic) like Quicken does. If you keep opening reports, and jumping to other areas, you'll find yourself with piles of windows at the bottom of your screen. I found the navigation clumsy and it was difficult to see the whole screen at my preferred screen resolution of 800 X 600. And, why no option to keep Frequent Flyer Accounts for the very common rewards programs that are out there?? It can be done with an "Asset" account, but I thought there would have been an option for it. And I think the cash flow projection can be improved. Although I like the calendar that shows my upcoming transaction and the impact on my checking account, in the last version of Money (NOT 2007-it's why I left) in the Bills screen I could multi-select several bills and get a projected outcome of my balance. That was a GREAT feature! I hope Intuit considers something like that on its calendar or in the bill screen (I've already written twice to suggest it).
The good: Reports, reports, reports. You can print from practically any screen. Beautiful reports. And you can attach files to your transactions. And, far more customizable than Money. I like the weblinks right on the bill pay screen so I can go right to my payee's website. (Money made that a two step deal to try to get you go with its MSN Bill Pay service. Why should I if I get it from Citibank for FREE!??)
And, the Bill Reminder is okay (Money did away with its "Money Express" for security reasons, yet another useful feature that I grew to depend on). But, I don't like that the Bill Reminder program does not require a password and will show anyone who cares to click on it all my upcoming transactions. Why no password protect?? And, it doesn't run on the taskbar, so once you close it after startup, it's gone until you (or anyone else at all, as I already said) cares to open it again.
And did I go through hell to convert my Money 07 file! I had already researched the reasons why the data converter that Quicken provides on its website would not convert my Money file and what my options probably were before contacting Intuits "Live Chat" support. After being annoyed by having to repeat everything I already typed to the techie and finding he was just going to the forum and doing the reading I had already done, I made a request to be elevated to higher tech support. After reiterating what I had read on the forum, the tech gave me a link to get the Quicken 02 version that I knew I needed. I then had to shorten all my Money account names and categories, export the .QIF files for EACH account. Install Quicken 02. Import each .QIF account. Start Quicken 07 and convert the Quicken 02 file. My data was a little quirky because I some categories became payees and detached from their transactions, but so far my balances look right. I downloaded my transactions from my bank and credit card companies in little time.
Overall, I think I've decided to keep Quicken. I sure went through a whole day or two trying to get the data converted and looking right, so I already feel commited. It does seem to be ahead of Money somewhat and I'll get used to the interface. Anyone looking to try either product, don't forget to backup your data file somewhere that is not in the original directory, so it is not over-written. Several backups are wise.
Hope this helps.
Update: January 12, 2007
I am sticking with Quicken for sure. After constant "tweaking" I have become accustomed to the home screen and the navigation and would not switch back to Money even if it was free. I love the "go" links that are on my bill page making it easier to go to my payee's website. The only convenience Money provided in its update centered on you signing up for its online bill payment service. The calendar with the optional running balance is very handy at-a-glance, especially the ability to add notes to it. I am glad I took the time to convert my file. It was worth it and I would now give this product 4 stars (because of the difficulty with the data converting).
Updated 01/23/07:
My earlier review was premature. Although I do like the customizability of the software, it has alot of problems downloading transaction. Sometimes it will get your transactions from your financial institution and bring them home, and sometimes they just disappear. Even importing files is difficult. It is very quirky. And I am computer literate. I went and downloaded an MS Money 2007 trial (I was originally running Money 04 and upgraded to Money 2007 on January 1st with 30 days money back refund. Not being thrilled with it, I tried Quicken a week later and liked Quicken better so I got my money back from Microsoft). Although I had issues with Money 2007 removing some features, it at least was dependable and kept my accounts up-to-date. I am giving Quicken another 30 days (and have spent hours on its forum) to figure out its issues (it has a 60 day return policy). In the interim, I am updating my transactions in both programs. (I should add that to convert my Quicken file to Money took all of a minute. Not so to convert my Money file to Quicken -- that took over two days and required downloading a prior version of Quicken!) I will update one more time. Hope this helps someone.

Updated 2/3/07:
Last update. I have come to a complete understanding of Quicken. One not so immediately apparent difference between it and Money is when you download your transactions via web connect (when you go to your bank's website yourself, as opposed to direct connect, where your program does background banking for you) Quicken will NOT let you re-download transactions that it already imported. Even if you deleted a transaction something by accident. It "remembers" it had already imported that transaction. Money will let you import as many times as you want to. If you really had to re-download to Quicken, you would have to delete your cookies first. Overall, this is not a problem. Quicken allows you to very easily manage your data files with backup, copy, rename options right from the program. I find it a far superior product than MS Money 2007.
UPDATE: 07/25/08
Still with Quicken Deluxe 2007. No complaints. I will be upgrading when they tell me my internet services have expired, which will probably be 2009.

PAYTRUST-BILL CENTER-HOME WIN 95/98/ME/NT/2000 GENERAL Review

PAYTRUST-BILL CENTER-HOME WIN 95/98/ME/NT/2000 GENERAL
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Paytrust.com is one of the most useful online services in existence. While most Internet savvy users will have online bill payment capabilities through their banking institution, Paytrust allows for RECEIPT of detailed bills at a designated mailbox in Sioux Falls, SD (sorry, there is only one location at this time). These bills are either scanned in or, if the merchant has electronic billing, sent electronically to Paytrust. They are then viewed by the user on the web site. With the separate and distinct mailing address, the service provides address privacy.
If you argue that your credit card or cell phone provider has electronic billing, Paytrust also eliminates marketing materials from these entities because they will STILL send solicitations and sell your information even after you request omission from their marketing list or use their electronic billing. Not only can you view incoming bills, which banks (as far as I am aware) do not offer, but Paytrust also helps eliminate junk mail. In other words, any junk mail that Paytrust receives in your mail box will be destroyed. "Important" documents such as convenience checks and cards are mailed to an alternate postal address.
The functionality and usability of Patrust are great. The web site is very easy to use and offers both a basic layout for dial-up users and a richer interface for broadband users. After receiving a bill, the users is sent an email notification telling you the payment amount and balance if applicable. You can chose to pay the bill via Paytrust or use means of your choice.
If you travel or move frequently or just hate junk mail, Paytrust can't be beat. Basically, it gives you address privacy with high level of convenience. Say good bye to the direct marketing association.

Quicken 2005 Premier Review

Quicken 2005 Premier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Per my usual procedure, I upgrade my copy of Quicken every other year. From what I can see, Quicken 2005 has hardly changed from Quicken 2003 (not necessarily a bad thing). Some things that I have noticed as being different are that:
- The program seems to load just a tad faster than before. On my 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 computer, my 19MB Quicken file changed from loading in about 2 seconds to loading in about 1 second. Insignificant, but noticable. On the esoterically theoretical downside, the Quicken 2005 upgrade process changed that same file from 16MB to that 19MB.
- The upgrade process suggested that I change my investing account so that the "checking" side of the account was reflected in one account instead of its existing two accounts. When I agreed, it processed the account and told me it didn't work right. Instead of reversing the change, it told me to restore a backup and leave the account as it was (unfortunately, it wasn't very specific about which account had problems or what they were). Not a big problem (since Quicken automatically made that backup when I started the upgrade). But, it could have been handled better.
- It appears that it's no longer possible to enter investment transactions directly in an account's register: you have to bring up a form dialog and enter the data there. If you enter such transactions only rarely, this isn't much of a problem. However, if you batch process a bunch of these, using that form gets tiresome pretty quickly.
- Unlike Quicken 2003 Deluxe, Quicken 2005 Premier allows you to set up scheduled transactions like dividends/interest in investment accounts. I'd have been happier if the program had noted dividend payments in the data downloads and automatically set up such quarterly scheduled payments. But, still, this is a good thing.
- With Quicken 2003, I was getting frequent error messages about my brokerage uploading data for accounts which didn't exist in Quicken. Those messages seem to have disappeared.
- When Quicken 2003 tried to download a quote for a stock which didn't exist in its data base, it popped up a warning screen and stopped the download until you accepted it. Quicken 2005 continues on without user intervention (a good thing, to me).
- The Quicken 2005 icon is UGLY and non-professional. I guess it's supposed to be a yellow dollar sign on a red-filled circle. Unfortunately, it looks like the "S" on Superman's outfit.
- Intuit seems to be practicing some type of "version-creep." From what I could decipher from the box and from Intuit's web site, I had to buy Quicken 2005 PREMIER to get the same investment capabilities I had in Quicken 2003 DELUXE. It's apparently a way of sneaking in a price increase. I don't mind the price increase so much as the fact that if I hadn't examined their table of capabilities, I would have automatically bought the DELUXE version and been unable to do the things I did with the old version. Irritating and potentially very bad from a customer-retention viewpoint.
- As others have noted here, Intuit is in the process of phasing out the use of QIF files. As I've never downloaded such things from my financial institutions, that doesn't affect me. The only worry I have is that this is yet another attempt by Intuit to lock people into their program (i.e., no data exchange). I haven't tried it yet, but there is an option to export REPORTS to Excel or to the clipboard (EDIT: I've now tried the Excel export and it's just the old export to a tab delimited file -- nothing new). If I could do that with an entire data file, that would be good. I'm not too sure about doing it with only what you can generate in a report, though. Also, as a work-around for importing QIF files to Quicken, I've seen messages that if you create a CASH account as a temporary working account, you can import your data there and then use Quicken's MOVE command to get the data in the proper account. Not elegant, but usable if you need it.
- I don't use the service, but from some articles I've read (do a Search on CNet), Intuit has changed the service it uses for online bill paying. It used to use CheckFree. With Quicken 2005, it uses Metavante. This, alone, doesn't seem to be much of a problem. But, the Quicken 2005 install process AUTOMATICALLY, and WITHOUT NOTIFICATION, changes your existing CheckFree account over to Metavante. Some people are rather upset about this (I would be too, if I used that service). There doesn't seem to be any way to opt out of, or reverse, that change.
All-in-all, I'm happy with the upgrade. It's not earth-shattering, so I don't recommend everyone run out and buy it. But, if you feel it's time to get a newer version of Quicken, there's nothing blatently wrong with this version and there are a few nice additions.

QuickBooks New Business Starter Kit Review

This disk is a few years old, but I was sad to find out that you can't access all of its information because you can't get a code. Basically, the only thing on here I felt was helpful was the sample business plan. I was okay paying 4 dollars for that. At least I have an outline to follow now.

Quicken Home & Business 2009 Review

Quicken Home and Business 2009
Average Reviews:

I've used Quicken for 15yrs+, buy every major upgrade. But this one has no new significant features, it adveritses some, but they don't stand out. I think there might be some extension of current features, but it's not changed my organization or advanced my reporting or insight in any new ways. I would not buy this particular upgrade had I known how insignificant this upgrade is for current users. I gave three stars because overall Quicken is still a GREAT product, just a useless upgrade for current users.

QuickBooks Pro 2006 Review

QuickBooks Pro 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sadly Quickbooks 2006 is only a minor upgrade from Quickbooks 2003. Users should also be aware that they will be forced to upgrade this software. at considerable expense, every 3 years. Also payroll services are not included and cost $150.00 more PER year. See "QuickBooks Standard Payroll Subscription" on Amazon.
The upgrade from Quickbooks Pro 2003 went very smoothly. Unfortunately the software, with no notification to the user, adds a second user to the XP operating system, necessitating logging on as a particular user when your computer boots.
We've found no real benefits from this "upgrade". The software boots much slower thanks to the DOUBLING of the company file. New users may find the redesigned home page useful and despite a great deal of verbage - that is about all that is new here.
New users should take advantage of the 30 days of free support - after that Quicken's dubious support is very high priced.
Quicken's business model is important to understand. They do not tweak their software, from year to year, for increased useability. The only changes that Quicken seems to devote their programming talent toward are new features, some well implemented and some poorly implemented - I don't think it matters to them - anything that will suggest a reason to purchase or upgrade the software. How easy the software could function on a day to day basis seems to be never given a thought.
Secondly Quicken expects your purchase of this software to be the first of many purchases from them. New business owners often will need expert help to set it up. Quicken, will of course, provide you with the name of a certified Quickbooks consultant, who for a fee, will set up the software. The software now comes with an on screen tutorial that may help some new users but it seemed less than complete.
New business owners should test all competing software to see what works best for them. Quickbooks is not bad software but it doesn't seem to evolve in a manner that is really sensitive to user's needs.
New users should also be aware that Quickbooks update feature routinely downloads very sizeable files that seem to do little if anything. A high speed internet connection is strongly suggested.

QuickBooks Point Of Sale: Pro Version 8.0 With Hardware Review

QuickBooks Point Of Sale: Pro Version 8.0 With Hardware
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The worst customer service ever in the history of mankind! Most importantly, you do not own anything. Do not think you are purchasing an asset here. You cannot transfer the license after you purchase it. I had to close my business due to the economy, but luckily found someone to purchase my hardware and software. Intuit/Quickbooks will not allow a you to transfer the license, even though they have a form to do so. It is a automated decline. You will not have an sucess getting a person to call you when you respond to their email declining the transfer. They are cocky and rude and will jerk you around telling you to call here and there. As a matter of fact, that is what they do any time you call customer service. Google "hate quickbooks" ort "quickbooks rip off" and see just how many people agree with me.
Their own customer support folks don't seem to know that you cannot transfer the license or anything else when it comes to this software company. I think they keep them in the dark on purpose.
I have dealt with some horrid companies in my time, but these folks take the cake. Stay away from Quickbooks and all Intuit products. They reel you in then they rip you off!

Learn by following examples in the practice file Have a question about a tricky transaction? Go into the practice file to see how it's done. We load this file with three months of sample data for an imaginary retailer. You'll find all types of transactions and situations to use as models for handling your own. You can also use the file to train new employees without putting your own data at risk.

Easily track business, customers and inventory at multiple stores Each store tracks sales, customer information, receipts of merchandise, and merchandise transferred to other stores and sends this information to the "headquarters" store via e-mail or CD. The headquarters store runs company-wide reports, controls inventory and issues purchase orders. And all stores are kept up-to-date with current information of inventories at other locations.
Get more detailed reports It's easy to compare performance across store locations, with multi-store reports. And, if you use QuickBooks accounting software, you can use Class tracking to get a more detailed financial picture of each store.
Schedule your store data exchange Now you can schedule to exchange data between stores every day, automatically! Maintain accurate, up-to-date information at headquarters to help you make the right purchasing plans, pricing decisions, and bookkeeping entries.

Quicken 2003 Premier Home & Business Review

Quicken 2003 Premier Home and Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used Quicken for about 6 years now and love most of the program. However, the 2003 version is no improvement over 2002. The didn't fix many of the bugs and added a few new one. For example, you still can't edit your ESOP transaction once you enter them. One of the new bug is you can't resize the search results window. Also, Quicken has gone way overboard with advertising. The software in now basically ad-ware, which would be ok if they didn't sell it to you. Finally, the business functions are so cripple they're almost useless. You can't even chose the columns or entries on invoices.

Quicken 2001 Deluxe Review

Quicken 2001 Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used Quicken for over 5 years. Until this version I've been a big fan. This version has many unacceptable bugs. It's added up the wrong total on my credit card accounts. It leaks system resources until it crashes. It fails to update the status on several of the windows until you restart it. The bill minder sometimes doesn't flag an uncoming bill. Sometimes it will stop updating the screen and will not minimize. I seem to spend almost as much time handling techinal problems as I do my finances. This version seems to be thrown together so Intuit could make a quick buck.
