The Agile Manager's Guide to Goal-Setting and Achievement (The Agile Manager Series) Review

The Agile Manager's Guide to Goal-Setting and Achievement (The Agile Manager Series)

Wadsworth does a thorough job of explaining what most of us think of as our typical goals--better job, bigger home, etc. A good, solid read that is accessible to more than just Ph.Ds. It's as good as Guerilla PR: Wired, which deals more with how to attain business goals. If you're interested in focusing more on business goals and not personal ones though, Guerilla PR: Wired is definitely the way to go.

Circus Ponies Notebook 3.0 Review

Circus Ponies Notebook 3.0

I am an avid note-take, both for my engineering job and as a freelance writer. I used MS OneNote when I had a PC, but when I migrated to a Mac, I was left searching for a suitable replacement. I have used Aquamind's NoteTaker and NoteShare for the last several months. But that program is so burdensome to use, I just couldn't take it any more. I finally landed on Notebook, which has been a great fit. It is similar to the Aquaminds product, but much easier to use and works better with Mac OS X. So far it has integrated perfectly with Address Book, Mail, Grabber, Services, and other Mac system elements. Some of the best features are stickies and flags, as well as the Multidex, which creates an index of your Notebook on the fly using several different parameters (e.g., capitalized words, highlighted text, check boxes, flags, web clippings, attachments, etc.). This allows me to quickly find project information, web clippings, etc. Notebook also allows you to record audio notes, and if you take notes or type while audio is recorded, it keeps track of where during the audio the typing was done. Another very neat feature is that you export a full Notebook as an interactive web page and it behaves very similarly to the actual notebook. I have used this when I wanted to send project notes to a colleague. I exported the notebook and he was able to work it in his browser. Notebook also syncs to-dos with iCal, but I don't use this feature very much. I use Things for my To-Dos, which is a great program is you have lots of tasks and projects with a multitude of To-do's.
What about areas for improvement? The program acts a little funky sometimes when I use OS X's spelling corrector on the fly. The program will occasionally appear to freeze, but it does come back to life. There are other program tweaks that would be nice, but they are not significant enough to list out here. Notetaker has just the right features and is just comprehensive enough to not get in the way of taking notes.

Macjournal 5.0 Review

The software has some positive features: good interface, reasonable to learn. And it seems to be refined and well-developed compared to other similar programs.
However, I've found that the program does not do much more than I can already do on my MacIntosh. The website suggests that the software is like Lance Armstrong choosing a good bike instead of settling for something less, but I actually feel that I can do less with the program. On a Mac, one can set up a folder (labeled Journal 2009, or the like) along the left of the finder and use MSWord or Pages for entries which have much better and more extensive graphic and text functions that MacJournal. In fact, when I tried MacJournal it felt like the program was simply reinventing the MacIntosh Finder for me, with less capability. And while it's nice to have things in one place, this also means one has too keep using the software to preserve the journaling system, or face a reorganization with lots of exporting in the future.
Also, the program creates a 'document" or like for each day, which seems like overkill. Then one has to open them separately to view. I realize that one can group such separate entries and export to wordprocessing as one document, but one could start this way in Word or Pages. With MacJournal one could reflect in one entry (renamed to something like January or 2009) for multiple days, but this again is similar to using a wordprocessing document.
Overall I'd suggest this for power journalers willing to commit to one system.

Things Task Management Review

Things Task Management

Although the developers of this software do not include a user manual on their website, (no user manual comes with the software when you buy it), Things is a good program. I just wish the developers would put an electronic user guide/manual. It would make the lives of people like me who have a business to run easier. I do not have the time to figure out the ins and outs of a software.
