The Bank Account Manager Review

The Bank Account Manager
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This software program is the easiest of any similar software I have ever used. It even helps me manage my debit card account. I have all my kids savings accounts in this program and that is nice that it will manage multiple accounts. It is in a tabular format. I select the account and then the tab and do my quick inputting. So easy to understand and use. I highly recommend it to any one who wants to manage their bank accounts and know a current accurate balance of each account. It does all the math and reconciling the checking account is as simple as checking off the checks that have cleared the bank per my end of the month statement.

This CD is so relaxing and peaceful. I love to fall asleep to it. You'll hear soothing music mixed with ocean waves and wind. The sound of the waves and the wind makes you feel like your on a tropical island. There are no words but when I listen very closely it almost sounds like I can hear the sound of someone whispering(could be my imagination though). I've only had it a few days but I can't wait see what effects it has.

PocketMoney Review

PocketMoney
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PocketMoney was the first software I purchased for my Palm IIIxe. It is easy to use, has a very friendly icon-based account list. Entering new transactions is very intuitive, very similar to Quicken on the desktop.
If you need to track your spending and only need to transfer data to your desktop on a rare basis, this is probably the best software for you.
However, you need to know that transferring data is fairly complex. If you are not comfortable using directories and subdirectories on your hard drive, you may want to consider Pocket Quicken instead.
Pocket Quicken has much better conduits (how data is transferred between your PDA and desktop). Everything is updated automatically, every time you hotsynch. Even though Pocket Quicken isn't as refined and easy to use as Pocket Money, it is still a very good program. But its weaknesses are more than made up for by the automated transfer of data.
But before you buy either product, go to Handmark's website for PocketMoney, and LandWare's website for Pocket Quicken. Download the 14-day free trial versions and play with them for a couple of weeks before you purchase the full version (here at Amazon.com)

Pocket Money 2.1 Review

Pocket Money 2.1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a HUGE fan of PocketMoney and have been for a year and half ever since I tried out the demo version. This simple little program is easy to use and will help you to keep your finances in line with minimal effort! I have tried Pocket Quicken as well and I'm happy to say that Pocket Money 2.1 is easier to use and more powerful (as well as less expensive!) than even Pocket Quicken. And as I mentioned in my title, this the only Palm app that I use on a daily basis..aside from the Datebook!
I use this in place of Quicken or MS Money. You heard me right...this little app is robust enough to be your stand alone financial software. Even better is that it's portable and does many of the things the desktop money managers do. Of course you can use it as a supplement for Quicken/MS Money as it does export QIF files, but on it's own, PM has the power and features to do everything you need.
Setting up accounts is easy as is doing the actual tracking of debits/credits and so on. You can set up recurring payments, regular deposits, and so on. You can set up which accounts are counted as part of your total net worth on the overview screen so that you always have a snapshot of just how much money you really have. The portability factor is great...stop at an ATM or purchase something and you can quickly record the transaction with a minimum of stylus taps and not have to worry about entering the receipts in your desktop PC when you get home.
The app is stable (never crashes), small in size (only a few hundred Kilobytes) and the password screen is a welcome basic safety feature. Plus, all your card info and bank contact data can safely be stored in this app in the event that you lose your wallet or need to call your bank!
If you buy just one Palm application or if you feel the need to organize your finances (and keep them organized), Pocket Money is a worthwhile purchase. I can't say enough about this great product!

Microsoft Money 2006 Premium Review

Microsoft Money 2006 Premium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's a shame that Microsoft stopped producing "Money". It does everything the average person needs to keep track of finances. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The Windows 7 version can accomodate "Money" but I doubt that future upgrades will. However, Money will no longer connect to the internet for on-line banking, stock price updates, etc. If this is important to you, find other software.

Microsoft Money 2006 Premium Review

Microsoft Money 2006 Premium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is what you must do to have a good experience with this product:
1. Never use Microsoft Passport.
Passport is a universal password that can be used to sign on to multiple bank accounts, brokerages, merchants, and God knows what else. It is a security disaster. Avoid it!
Your installation of Microsoft Money will be a bit awkward if you want to avoid Passport. Some users believe that Money won't install unless you get a Passport. This is false, at least for Money 2006 and earlier versions. You just have to be careful (and resolute!) while you install. See also item 6. below.
2. Never store your financial data online with Microsoft
MS Money allows you to keep all your financial data stored on Microsoft's computers, as well as on your home computer. This allows you to access your MS Money data when you are away from your computer. For the unlucky user, it leads to virtually insoluble computer nightmares. Apparently, the local and remote copies of your data can get out of sync. It becomes difficult or impossible to overcome data corruption on Microsoft's computers. You fix up your local data, and it gets scrambled again when you connect to Microsoft's computers.
If you observe 1. above, you will not have to worry about 2.
3. Never use Yodlee to download account information from financial institutions
Yodlee (spit) is a company/method for downloading your account information from banks, credit card issuers, brokerages, etc. The way it works is that it impersonates a web browser and surfs your bank's (or brokerage's or ...) web site in order to suck in your account details.
The problem is that your bank's web site is designed for browsing by humans, not software. Small design changes to your bank's web site can cause Yodlee to scramble the data. Frustrating for you.
Many (but not all) financial institutions will download your account transactions directly into MS Money without the use of Yodlee. Yodlee gives you access to a larger collection of financial institutions. But it is not worth it.
If you observe 1. above, then you will not have to worry about Yodlee.
4. Keep several backup Money files
Microsoft Money stores all of your financial data in a single disk file on your computer. This is convenient for you. Money also allows you to store several backup copies of this disk file. I suggest that you configure Money to store 4 (depending on how paranoid you are) backup copies. What this means (for example) is that if you work with Money one time on each of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, then you will get a total of 5 copies of the file that holds your financial data. The oldest (backup) copy will reflect the state of your MS Money data from Monday. The newest (not a backup) will reflect the state of your MS Money data from Friday.
Why do this? Because like all Microsoft products, Money will occasionally scramble up your data. If you are not able to unscramble (there is a "repair" feature that you can try) then your only hope is to revert to an older copy of your data, and kiss your most recent updates goodbye.
You might not discover the corruption right away. That's why I suggest keeping multiple backups.
5. Back up your computer disk
This suggestion is not specific to Microsoft Money. But I feel obliged to mention this anyway. The more you use MS Money, the more you have to lose if your computer malfunctions. You can lose disk data due to a worn out disk drive, or an electronic failure in the computer itself. Your computer can suffer from fire, flooding, or theft. Your data can disappear from simple mistakes by users, or by the children of users!
So you have to back up your disk data. Most home computer users don't bother. But this bears repeating: the more you use an accounting program like Microsoft Money, the more you need to back up. Get to it!
6. Purchase the normal, CD-ROM version of Money, rather than the downloaded (electronic only) version.
WARNING: unconfirmed by my personal experience. Amazon.com sells this software product in a box containing a CD-ROM and some sketchy paper documentation. You can also download the software directly from Microsoft. But I have been told that the direct purchase from Microsoft requires the use of Passport. As I state in 1. above, I believe that Passport is a bad idea. So it is probably wise to purchase the physical, CD-ROM version from Amazon.com.
7. Find a community of knowledgable users
Like all mass market software, the technical support available for this product is useless. You should find a discussion forum for users of Microsoft Money. This is where you will go for help with problems that you cannot solve by yourself. I suggest that you read through the forum posts even when you don't have a Money problem. Look for major problems that might affect you. Forewarned, you might be able to avoid such problems.
Personally, I use the usenet news group microsoft.public.money. It can be found through microsoft.com or groups.google.com. Generally speaking, the intelligence level in this ng is solidly mediocre. That's in the nature of the Microsoft user community. If you find a better forum, please write an Amazon.com "review" of your own and share it.
Good luck with Microsoft Money!

Modeless Liquid Ledger Personal Finance Software (Mac) Review

Modeless Liquid Ledger Personal Finance Software (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only reason I bought Liquid Ledger was that Quicken for Macintosh got such horrible reviews on Amazon, but now I wish I'd taken my chances. I was converting from a PC to Mac and needed financial software to take the place of Quicken. My experiences with Quicken for Windows were all fairly positive; however, with LL, it's been nothing but frustration and headaches.
First off, it didn't want to play nice with my exports from Quicken, so I had to try over and over to find a format that it would accept, and even then things didn't translate cleanly. Beyond that initial frustration with getting my existing data loaded, I just find Liquid Ledger to be very unfriendly and not at all intuitive - things are not grouped logically under the menus, nor are the functions named in a way that makes a lot of sense. I understand that most software comes with a learning curve, but I'm a pretty sharp guy with a good deal of computer savvy (been working with computers and various operating systems professionally for a good 16 years now), and I find LL confounding.
My biggest gripe about it is the bugs. For one, things rarely sort correctly. If I click on a column header, I expect it to sort my data by the values in that column, and clicking the header again should reverse the sort. However, with LL, if I make a change in a column (e.g. clicking the "cleared" box next to a transaction) and then immediately try to sort on that column, the sort is incorrect; it is as though it does not recognize the modification I just made, and the only remedy is to sort by ANOTHER column first, then sort on the column I originally wanted. UNACCEPTABLE!!!
If I'm on the last transaction that's displayed in the window and tab off the last field, the cursor jumps to the very FIRST transaction. NOT what I would want or expect - how about just going back to the first field of the current transaction???
The most frustrating bug is the disappearing details pane. LL allows you to sub-itemize a transaction in a separate pane on the main window by entering individual line item transactions that comprise the main transaction. I most often use this for tracking transactions on my Visa credit card - I'll have one line item for the total bill, and the details pane allows me to record the individual purchases separately, which I can then use to reconcile my statement when it comes in. So, the details pane works fine, until I decide to toggle to another window or open application. When I do, the details pane is usually gone when I return to LL, and the only way I have found to recover it is to QUIT LL and restart it. Not only does the pane disappear, but the scroll bar on the right edge of the window goes away also, and the transactions generally run past the bottom of the page. In other words, the application becomes all but unusable until I restart it.
Also, I've got years worth of data, but LL absolutely bogs down unless I restrict the transactions to just a month or two. I've never had any issue with this in Quicken.
The "help" within the application is anything but helpful. There are plenty of descriptions of the sorts of things you can ostensibly do with LL, but just try and figure out how to actually accomplish any of those things! The procedural descriptions, if they exist at all, are very well-hidden. The only available customer support appears to be "Online Support Forums," which I take to be a cop-out on the part of Modeless. Let the customers gripe to each other about the buggy product, rather than actually do anything to fix it. The bugs I've noticed are pretty major - and I've submitted my share of bug reports - but in the five months I've used this piece o' c*** there hasn't been a single software update available.
It doesn't surprise me that there's only one other review of this product at the time of this writing. Perhaps LL's reputation is well-known and more people are opting to deal with Quicken for Mac. I certainly wish I had!!!

A very easy to use tool for keeping your budget on track. the only improvement I would suggest is that it let you track your current expenditures alongside the budget, but that is just a minor nuisance. I would reccommend this to anyone who doesn't like complicated excel sheets and it is much easier to understand than those budgets that are included in Quicken and MS Money.

I love the snowball calculator that calculates how long it will take to pay off a debt given your payment amount and interest rates. It really helps to see how much even a small amount extra added to the principal payment goes a long way towards paying it off early and saving lots in interest fees. The budgeting worksheets are also useful. Very user friendly.

You Need A Budget (YNAB) - Personal Finance Software Review

You Need A Budget (YNAB) - Personal Finance Software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
YNAB Rocks! In a truly frightening kind of "I spend that much money on THAT!" way but in a great way because you can see the impact of your daily coffee habit on your car insurance payment 6 months away.
YNAB allows you account for all your annual bills in 1/12 increments and then when they roll around the money is there to pay for them.
The heart of the YNAB system is a "buffer" which is comprised of last months paychecks in order to allow you to save this months paychecks. You can only live on last months money that you have budgeted into categories beforehand. The premise is that you are never broke and will not have to worry about fluctuations in income if you are living on what you have ALREADY earned.
So the buffer is one full months income. So I'm earning May's income and it is just pouring into my checking and sitting there. Also sitting there is all of April's income. April's income is what I'm paying my current bills with. May is accruing. And I'm budgeting for June's expenses with an eye to leftover April income instead of instantly using Mays.
The way I'm beginning to think of it is: Quicken is a snapshot of yesterday. YNAB is a crystal ball showing me the future.
This is a stand alone piece of software that can download transactions right from your bank so if you use a debit card you don't need to enter receipts for things. I can also say the tech support is the most amazing I have ever dealt with. I sent in a bug report and within 15 minutes had email waiting for me telling me to delete a particular font and then it worked perfectly.
Two thumbs way up but only if you want to see all the leaks in your money handling.
