FileMaker Pro 6 Review

I've been using FileMaker Pro software since version 1.0, when it was originated by Claris, and was only for Macintosh. I've since switched to PCs, and FileMaker Pro is now its own company. But the quality of the software remains excellent, the upgrades are always worthwhile, and this is still the most user-friendly database I've ever used.
Especially if you're an Access user (which is impossible software!), you will love the ease and versatility of this program.

Bento - Complete Package - 1 PC - CD - Mac (40129I)
Average Reviews:

Bento is a smart, convenient database for the non-power user. Within its limitations it's excellent, interacting automatically with other apps (like iCal and Address Book) on the Mac. It also simplifies database use in general for those of us intimidated by full FileMaker.
Unfortunately, it lacks some capabilities a lot of ordinary Mac users will want - primarily the ability to sync data among multiple Macs. If you keep Bento on your desktop you can't readily sync its data to the same app on your laptop, or vice versa. Makes it tough for use in a mixed environment.
Online discussions have highlighted this shortcoming, and we can hope the first revision will overcome this limitation. Meanwhile, if you do all your computing/database use on a single machine, Bento's fine.

The best thing about FileMaker Pro is that it will work on all platforms. I share data and forms with both Mac Users and PC'rs. I am familiar with designing a basic database, and was able to do so right away. However there are options that will keep me learning for many months ahead. The designation "no platform" simply means that it will work on Mac, PC, or Linux. The Academic version appears to be identical to the regular one. Acad Filemaker Pro 10

FileMaker Pro 10 Review

FileMaker Pro 10
Average Reviews:

I've used Filemaker since it's been black and white on a Mac Classic. From version to version it has always upgraded my files and performed flawlessly. At FM 6 I migrated over to Windows and the migration of my relational database was virtually flawless -just a little tweaking of layout and fonts.
It has always been very easy to use -I have built entire applications for my personal use and it's always trouble free and fast. It is crazy simple to customize.
I stopped at FM 6 for a while because FM 7 switched to a new database model, more in line with other databases like MySQL. Finally this year I switched to FM 10. I did need to redo my databases into tables and used it as an opportunity to clean out the unused stuff I'd added and then stopped using over 15 years -but I was surprised that it was way easier to migrate than I expected.
FM10 also has a nifty function where, as I update my FM records locally on my computer, it updates the MySQL database where my website is hosted. I enter new products and my website, running off MySQL and PHP is instantly updated!
FM is stable as all get out. My Macs didn't crash but of course my PCs do. When that happens FM will sometimes say it needs to "rebuild the database" -it has NEVER failed to do so. I have never lost data. Also, they don't release until it's right. Windows seems to be in perpetual Beta mode and you get to be the tester but through many upgrades, Filemaker is never half baked -new versions always run well and I'm not on tech support bringing up bugs they didn't catch.
Filemaker has a good deal of power for the power user, but FM has also been the database of choice for people who have no database experience. I started as a newbie many many years ago, found it easy to learn (once I understood the idea of a relational database) and I still love it! When a company does a good job of something I think it's very important to say so (cause usually I'm bitchin'.)

Filemaker Pro 11 Review

Filemaker Pro 11
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am the Senior FileMaker Pro Developer at a major American university/medical school, where we have integrated FileMaker Pro and Oracle-based products to manage the vast amounts of clinical data collected for our cancer research center. We've recently started testing FileMaker Pro 11 in our environment, and have so far been very impressed with the new features and enhancements I've encountered.
Here are a few notable things I've encountered:
CHARTING
This long-overdue feature alone justifies the upgrade price! In the past, creating a simple chart in FileMaker Pro has been a complex process involving byzantine workarounds and/or expensive plug-ins or services. Now you can create dynamic charts which key off table data, found-set data, or related data. The new feature supports bar, line, area, and pie charts. I looking forward to seeing more chart types in future releases.
SUMMARIZED DATA ON TABLE LAYOUTS
This feature greatly increases the usability of the table view in FileMaker Pro, and reduces the need for my Excel-savvy users to export the data for further analysis.
RECURRING IMPORT
This feature creates a dynamic link between an existing Excel spreadsheet and a FileMaker Pro file. This is great in an environment like ours where many different data platforms (including Excel) must be supported. With this feature, I can allow an Excel spreadsheet to be the primary repository of a given chunk of data, but still use a FileMaker Pro solution for analysis and reporting. This gives us more flexibility to offer multi-platform solutions to complex workflows.
THE INSPECTOR
The old "Object Info" palette has been greatly extended as a full-blown "Inspector", where all aspects of an object such as position, text & data formatting, field behavior attributes, etc. can be managed. Multiple inspectors can be open, which makes creating layouts a lot more efficient.
ENHANCED OBJECT BADGES
"Object Badges" are visual hints which appear in layout mode which advise the developer about how that object is formatted. This feature has been implemented before with badges for tooltips and script triggers, but has now been extended to show fields with conditional formatting and indexing for the new "Quick Find" feature.
QUICK FIND
This new feature allows the user to search for a particular value across all fields in the layout at once. I don't know how many times I've created this feature in my own solutions, but it was always a hassle and never as elegant or fast as Quick Find. Now I can include this feature in every solution without any any additional effort.
ENHANCED CUSTOM MENU CREATION
A long-awaited re-write of the Custom Menu tool (in FileMaker Pro Advanced) makes the process a lot simpler and intuitive. Finally!
IN-CONTEXT OBJECT CREATION
I've discovered many places in the interface where I can instantly create new objects such as fields, scripts, etc. in the context of what I'm doing. For example, I can invoke a "create script" window directly from within the "Custom Menu" window if I wish to attach a script (which I hadn't previously defined) to a menu item. Another example is the ability to create a new field when defining a table layout without needing to invoke the "Manage Database" window. There are more examples of this "in-context" integration, but the net effect is that I spend less time invoking windows and more time focused on the task at hand. It's a small thing which makes a big difference to a developer.
COPY / PASTE / IMPORT CUSTOM FUNCTIONS
A huge time-saver for developers. Now I can simply keep all my custom functions in a reference file, and move only the ones I want into any given solution.
***
I'm still discovering all the new features of FileMaker Pro 11, but as a 20-year FileMaker Pro developer, I can tell you the upgrade price is more than justified - it's a no-brainer. For companies, institutions, and casual users who are considering FileMaker Pro as a new platform, there has never been a better time to jump on the bandwagon - you won't regret it!

FileMaker Pro 8 Win/Mac Review

FileMaker Pro 8 Win/Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Think you don't need a database? What about for managing customer contacts, sending email campaigns, tracking inventory or handling expense reports? All that stuff is easier when the data is organized as collection of records - or, as a "database."
With FileMaker, these are just some of the functions that are actually part of the product, and come as templates already designed for a specific task. I can just pull down a menu, select from dozens of possible applications, and then start to fill in the fields. I like to think of FileMaker as a bunch of databases applications, all in one product.
Since I was already familiar with FileMaker, there was some new stuff in Version 8 that immediately got my attention. I could instantly export data to Excel, or create a .pdf directly from within FileMaker. I just hit a button to export data and chose Excel, which is great for reports and charts. It was just as easy to create a .pdf, which is ideal for making product literature or customer brochures. Earlier versions of FileMaker allowed me to drag-and-drop Excel spreadsheets right into the databases, as well as instantly publishing to the web. That stuff is still there, and it's still very cool.
For the techies, the new FileMaker has a list of additional new features that make programming complex databases even easier - stuff like new tabs and drop down calendar controls, and easier scripting. Plus, FileMaker has an advanced version that adds even more debugging, and database analysis tools if you want to create your own custom databases.
For many people I know, the biggest hurdle with FileMaker is the idea that "a database isn't for me." It can be. You don't even have to know it's a database. And for about $300, it's worth a try.

With a host of new features designed to make the creation of databases easier, FileMaker Pro 8 is an ideal solution for those who are responsible for people, project, assets, and more. In addition to its lineup of standard database creation and management tools, FileMaker Pro 8 features new tools that make customizing databases, accessing FileMaker information over the web, and sharing with other FileMaker users or with those outside your FileMaker workgroup easier than ever.
Getting started with FileMaker Pro 8 is easy, and it only takes minutes to create your own database. The process is even simpler with the ability to import Excel files instantly. FileMaker Pro 8 can store a variety of information types and a virtually unlimited amount of data. Databases can be customized to fit your needs, with built-in assistants and the ability to drag and drop objects and to link information quickly and easily. You can also design easy to read layouts and create your own views of the data.

New time-saving tools will help you get more done. Auto-complete, calendar drop-downs, visual spell checker, and mouse wheel support will make data entry speedier and more intuitive. A field list filter lets you view and choose from fields used on the displayed layout only, making choosing fields faster. The new Tab Control function helps you build a layout with multiple tabs in a single step so you can switch between tabs without needing scripting, eliminating the need for multiple layouts.

FileMaker information can be accessed remotely so that clients or vendors can view FileMaker information, or you can view data in the FileMaker interface. Web accessed can be provided with a single click, and access can be assigned based on privileges. Built-in multi-user capabilities make it easy for up to five users to share FileMaker databases simultaneously, regardless of platform type.

FileMaker Pro 8 features built-in reports that can be printed in a variety of formats. You can create Adobe PDF files from Filemaker information, making it easy to share information with other users. The new Excel Maker lets you create Excel files from FileMaker information so that you can easily share information with others or analyze the data more thoroughly. The contents of virtually any field can be emailed to anyone with just a few, simple clicks.

FileMaker Pro 8 features new tools for developers, giving you even more power over variables and database design. Global and local script variables canbe stored, eliminating the need to create unnecessary fields to store values. Scripts can now perform functions and return results to the calling script. This gives you the power to create flexible, re-usable scripts to help you save development and maintenance time. The Relationships Graph lets you duplicate tables and relationships, and document database design by adding notes. New script steps are included to easily show all related records for an entire found step and to support dynamic selection of field repetition through the use of a calculation. Value Lists will display more meaningful information while hiding cryptic associated values.

New features in FileMaker Pro 8:

Create Adobe PDF files with the PDF Maker so you can more easily share FileMaker information with others.
Use the new Excel Maker to create Microsoft Excel files, allowing you to share and analyze FileMaker information with others.
Fast Send feature lets you Email the contents of any field instantly.
Fast Match feature helps you search the database without typing.
New alignment tools allow you to create cleaner looking database layouts.
Send personalized messages to multiple customers with the new Email merge.
Import tables into FileMaker more efficiently than ever.
The Relationships Graph helps you document databases and field relationships.
The new Tab Control helps you build layouts with multiple tabs in a single step.

I am not a programmer, but I am a computer nerd. By profession, I am a lawyer. Databases are a very valuable asset for lawyers. In fact, there are about a dozen companies out there who sell customized database applications for lawyers. I've tried alot of them and even use one of these proprietary databases in my practice.
I am considering eventually making my office all-Mac (stability, virus-free, machines stay current and last longer than PC) so I investigated Filemaker. Filemaker will allow me to track all my data exactly how I want and mix Macs and PC's in my office.
Filemaker Pro 9 ships with alot of "Starter Applications"--these are databases already completely set up for you. You enter or import your data and for probably 80% of people who need a database, this is a great place to start--and you may never need to do anything else. Contacts, asset management, task and project management, there are dozens of starter solutions built right into Filemaker.
For us tinkerers, we want to be able to to make the database track what we want, and in exactly the way we want. You DO NOT have to be a computer programmer to do this or learn some crazy and difficult magic language as another reviewer suggests. It is hands down easier to do this stuff in FMP9 than in any other product out there. That that other reviewer would even suggest that Filemaker Pro and any SQL solution is even in the same ballpark in difficulty is ridiculous. SQL gives professional, full-time programmers nightmares. If you can figure out the train wreck that is SQL queries, you'll feel like you landed in a sunny tropical paradise in FMP9. Understand, this is not a crippled, limited tool. Its a full featured, powerful relational database with tools built into it to make it as easy for new users as possible to use. You can make about as complex a database with powerful automated features as you could ever want. BUT, if you do that, you DO have to LEARN how to do it. Complex databases take some planning and know how. Read a book or watch a training video, and tinker.
If you learn how to use FMP9, I can tell you that you will save on other software costs in the future, because you can throw together whatever you need--no buying multiple other apps to track this or that.
I'd suggest the very readable Filemaker Pro The Missing Manual as a great book. There are videos you can watch on your computer, too. You can pick up Filemaker 8 training for $10 on ebay, and that will teach you 90% of what you need to know bc the basics did not change much between 8 and 9. I also got s cheap copy of Chris Ippolite's "Beyond the Basics" training DVD and it is truly excellent.
If you are the type who might consider customizing a database, then Filemaker is hands down the best option out there. Give it a try--you can download a 30 day evaluation copy at the Filemaker web site. I think you'll be impressed.

After using Microsoft Access for some time, I'm convinced FileMaker is the way to go. The features of the developer package, data tracker and script debugging were a big help. The tooltip added a touch of sophistication to my overlay application that impressed the users.
I faced a lot of challenges and many times thought FileMaker just wasn't capable of doing what I wanted to do. However, in most cases, I was able to find a way to accomplish my goals. The FileMaker on-line community is robust and helpful. I'll never go back to Access.

I am still disappointed in Bento. I've been hoping they would get it right for a couple years now. Bento is very easy to set up and go, but that is due to its stultifying simplicity. Filemaker, Bento's big brother, is comprehensive but complex. Why can't Bento make up the middle ground??
Bento is easy to use, has a few good features, but many serious, frustrating limitations. As far as I can tell, this version just adds some social networking (web sharing) capability and integration with iPads, and that's about it. It is otherwise very close to Bento 3 (and see my 2-star review of that).
Bento has some good features:
- it integrates well with the MAC environment (address book, calendar, iPhoto)
- it is *fairly* easy to import data from spreadsheets (only. and still very basic and limited)
- it is quick for setting up simple database forms that look nice (but simple)
- it lets you move data to your iPhone/iPad with their app (although this has room for improvement)
- it has some mathematical field capabilities, but very rudimentary
- they offer access to a lot of free templates to get you started and to give you ideas
Obviously, Bento focuses on ease of use and integration, as well as simple, attractive appearance. But Bento still lacks flexibility, analytical features, and interoperability with other data applications and formats.
It is still very limited when it comes to:
- creating reports (repeating or otherwise) and/or summaries (unable to do them)
- creating summaries that are mathematically derived from other fields (cannot do it)
- sorting drop-down lists (can't do it)
- field definitions (small, canned set)
- free-form design/creativity (don't have it)
- database relationships (they make it sound simple, but it's clunky and limited)
- analyzing your data (simplicity of forms and lack of math make it impossible to really examine your data)
- graphical images (automatic formatting restricts how you can use images in your forms)
- data export (you're limited to text or spreadsheet)
Bento isn't expensive, tho it ain't cheap either, but it might not be money well spent, since it is very feature-free. It should be half the price. Bento's big brother, FileMaker, is expensive and for most people NOT money well spent, since it contains many more features (and complexity) than an average user needs.
If you're new to databases, or need to manage a simple mailing list or club membership, you might find this application sufficient for your needs. I recommend you download the trial version first before you buy.
This bento box is a snack that leaves you wanting more. I'm still waiting for them to get it right!

Bento 3 Review

Bento 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a Bento user since 2.0, and I'm reasonably experienced in database. I also use Filemaker Pro 10.
In short, Bento 3 is very useful for personal users, for purposes it is advertised, but I would not expect much more from Bento. Bento 3 is also not much more than Bento2 engine with new cosmetic features. It is no Filemaker. It is very useful when you want to extend or add function to Addressbook, Todo list, calendar, etc., or make your own task manager. In other words, Bento can serve very well as a highly customizable personal information management (PIM) or digital organizer system based on simple databases. Its main weakness are limited relational functions, limited to one table per "library" (databse), and lack of embedded browser interface. Also, "media" field and URL list field of Bento databases are not exportable or importable through CSV files. They are retained within local Bento database files, and they can't be exchanged with other apps in any standard way (unless you are familiar with SQLite database engine, used by Bento. You could access these files directly, if so desired.).
There are many annoying inconveniences in terms of features and user interfaces. I'm actively filing suggestions though their website, so I am strongly hoping that they will release new version soon to fix these problems, but so far I didn't get any luck. I will revise this review and potentially raise the star rating when I see this happening (by the way, I gave 3 stars to Bento 2).
Compared to Filemaker, Bento is a lot easier to use, and much more like Mac software, while Filemaker has more awkward user interface as a Mac application. When creating a simple database, Bento requires a lot less initial work than Filemaker, and the screen layout looks much nicer. Fast, easy, convenient, streamlined are the strengths of Bento over Filemaker.
Bento also has star-rating element, and a few other convenient features that Filemaker lacks. It seems to me that Filemaker avoided these useful features from Filemaker Pro 10 to distance itself from Bento. (I personally want Filemaker Pro 10 to be a superset of Bento, so that I don't have to switch apps to manage personal records, and research data sets, business data and others.)
On the other hand, Filemaker is much more powerful when it comes to relational functions, elements available to user interface. For example, Filemaker can have a web browser (which can also display PDF documents or local files) embedded as an element of user interface within the Filemaker window, which I find very convenient. When the database is large (say more than 10000 records), Filemaker is considerably faster when running search, etc. This is to be expected, since Bento is based on SQLite engine, while Filemaker Pro uses more powerful database engine.
I bought both Bento and Filemaker Pro 10 myself, out of my personal funds. That should tell you that I find both apps are useful for different purposes, and they are different enough. This much is true. What I am not happy is why they did not make Filemaker Pro 10 to have some of the cool features of Bento to make it more useful for quick applications by power users. If you are a Filemaker user, you may find the same bitterness when you decide to shell out for Bento.
I use Bento among my MacPro, Macbook and iMac, synchronized via a pocket hard drive (iMac and Macbook) and/or intranet (MacBook), using MacPro as the base machine. I do this by syncing Bento database folder, Addressbook folder and iCal folder using a free software called unison. It is essential that all three of these databases are synchronized concurrently on all machines, or the references from Bento to the other Mac apps will be broken. If you routinely use multiple computers, Unison is a very worthwhile software to familiarize yourself with, although it is a Unix-originated free software and there is some unfriendliness to it.
