Apple Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard Server Review

Apple Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When Leopard Server was first released, it certainly had some bugs. But any IT person worth their pay knows that you never install the first version of an Server OS after release.
Now that we are up to version 10.5.2, I feel like it's ready to shine.
The new Basic Install is great for those who are not really the IT person, but was put in charge of managing the server. The "On/Off" switches really make it easy to get services up and running.
My favorite thing about Advanced is the ability to see so many stats on how the server is doing under heavy loads.
And of course the best thing about a Mac OS X Server is the licensing. When compared to the costs of Windows server software, it's no comparison.

Apple Remote Desktop is unique in many ways. Whether you are doing package management, desktop management or asset tracking, there is no solution out there than can do so many things so well. Like everything Apple, setup is painless and the interface is highly intuitive, crisp and easy to master. Many of the performance issues that plagued earlier versions have been now been addressed. Depending on the quality of your internet connection, the combination of the application's light foot print, the richness of the user experience and varied toolset will no doubt greatly enhance your productivity while giving those remote work tasks a very localized feeling. Now with ILOM built into the latest Intel Xserves, onsite IT staff for those branch offices is a thing of the past.

IRIS Business Card Reader II (Macintosh Edition) Review

IRIS Business Card Reader II (Macintosh Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you'd still like proof that the average human mind doesn't think in any manner resembling a computer's processor chip (even those computers we love that help us "think different!"), attempt to comprehend the challenge in how a computer "reads" a sheet of paper.
You and I read an article in the newspaper, skip over to a eye-catching advertisement, pull out our wallets and exchange business cards, and all the time, we have learned to scan the item of interest, pick out those words that are important, discard the rest as unnecessary, and go about our busy lives.
But not a computer. A computer lives for those details. And those same details can mire a processor down.
Which in a way is why the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software engine used by ReadIRIS Pro 9.0 is a delight to work with. The people behind the software have helped to link the scanned data into basic patterns and formats ever so much more useful to the daily lives of the user (me, in this case!)
I initially looked into this review by getting my hands on the Business Card Reader (BCR) device, in this version, roman number II, so that I might make my life easier by managing the growing pile of business cards that I collect, and have collected over the past decade, and expect to continue to collect well into the future.
There is something wonderful indeed about business cards, especially in how succinct the summary of a person's relevance. But I digress away from attempting to deal with this growing pile of cards.
Card files don't seem to work for me. But I have enjoyed manually inputting some of my more frequent contacts into Address Books (both Apple's version and Microsoft's Entourage version.) So it seemed an obvious step to begin to input the business cards using a Business Card Reader!
I will warn you -- skip the software that comes "standard" with the current Business Card Reader II. An upgrade is promised, but in the meantime, consider using another ReadIRIS product -- Pro 9.0 (in my case, I tried the corporate edition).
ReadIRIS Pro is a joy to work with. The install was smooth and easy. The software engine (with all files and reference information) installed in less than 80 megabytes. I thought that quite good, especially with how the software promised to handle so many different fonts and language styles.
I tested the software with both a Hewlett Packard scanner and the BCR device. Switching between the two was very quick. I can see how the OCR software could pay for itself due to some of the vast amount of reference materials still unconverted to digital format (the software outputs in text, rich-text, html and pdf formats). Keep in mind however to put aside some time to proof your new documents against the old. If you have a set of material which needs OCR review, one of ReadIRIS Pro 9.0's benefit's shines -- the work you do to input corrections into a dictionary format can help similar documents in basic recognition of font and language skill.
In order to get back to my original project of dealing with my card piles, I was able to get cards read into Entourage's address book in an average of 3 minutes per card. I'm not too quick at typing, but I might have entered them only slightly faster just by doing it all manually. But -- I haven't done this over time. And, I was sort of mesmerized by watching the scanner process my business card stack. That is the fast part. The other portion of the three minute average was spent looking over the scanned data (automatically exported from ReadIRIS Pro 9.0 into Entourage) and "proofing". I was very impressed by the quantity of correct data, even with "pretty" photograph enhanced business cards.
My business card organization project will be ongoing. But now I have a much better tool set.
I definitely recommend the Iris Business Card Reader, but I also recommend contacting the company to see when the enclosed version of software is upgraded, since I didn't benefit from the full corporate version of the software at the listed price.

Quicken 2001 Deluxe Review

Quicken 2001 Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great program to help keep your finances organized and (ideally) under control. It is easy to use and once you start you might wonder what you did without it. One beef--the Mac version has fewer features than the Windows version, for the same price. At least Quicken is available in a Mac version, which isn't the case for many other software programs.

macXware Mac Pac (Mac) Review

macXware Mac Pac (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This package caught my eye, much in the way the original iMacs, with their distinctive coloring captured my attention.
And in this manner, once I got into the application package itself, I was as pleased as I was with how the iMac was as much a integration of form and function.
The MacPac is described as "A Collection of Useful Applications for OS X". I'd agree. There are five programs contained within: FontManager; AppSwitch; RadicalSqueeze; MacCabinet; and, RadicalPhoto.
Initially, I pulled out the small user's manual and the CD-rom from the MacPac box. While I don't always read the manual before popping the CD-rom into my PowerBook, I stopped and perused the manual. In this case, I was very pleased by how "short and sweet" the user's manual is. Each application is listed one only one side of one page, per. Good enough, in my opinion. Each application's help and on-line help links are more than enough. I like the software developer's instinct that more would not have made the user's manual better.
My only real concern about this whole suite of programs -- at install, I would have liked to install all the programs at once! Unfortunately, each needs to be installed separately. This isn't a big deal, but a single install option would have improved my ability to get at "all" of the programs. So, I installed each application in the MacPac, and began to play.
FontManager is a nice way to review fonts, install them temporarily and/or permanently, and remove fonts as desired. While I don't generally do a lot with fonts (I have about five favorites), I appreciated the ability to look over the font TrueType formats. In general, I see this application as one I'd use only once in a great while, but when I do, its just the tool for the job.
AppSwitch is a handy way to have all open applications available in a drop down menu, from the toolbar. To a certain extent, this feature is redundant to the dock, and to the ability to "Apple-Tab" switch between open applications. But, I do find that this program might be useful if you find yourself switching between OS 9 and OS X. In this case, the AppSwitch is just familiar enough, and a fair trick. In this case, you might want to have AppSwitch open and running with log-on.
RadicalSqueeze is a quick and convenient way to compress stuff. Its options are to compress into either .zip or .tar format. Having played a little with unix in a previous life on a Sun workstation, I prefer the .tar format, but both seem to work satifactorily. This application is useful when sending files over email, or uploading files to an online directory. If you are using this program with any dial-up log-in, you will enjoy the time savings.
MacCabinet is one of those organization tools. I broke myself of keeping files on my desktop a good while ago. But, MacCabinet allows you to "pull" open a storage window (definable in the right or left side of your screen) and put/grab files from this location. Fairly simple to use, and another of those programs that, if you like it, you'd set it up to begin when you log-in. One quirk I noticed: when I started it initially, a message (which I probably misread) instructed me to go to the left side of the screen to "pull open" my cabinet window. But I found my cabinet opening on the right side of the screen. Not a real issue, because of the extremely simple way to customize the cabinet.
Finally, RadicalPhoto is one nice simple photo enhancement program. I have been using iPhoto predominately for most of my images, but sometimes, I'd like to use something a bit "more." While I have used Adobe's PhotoShop Elements, I prefer Radical Photo for both is simplicity and its price. Plus, I like the option of saving in a wide variety of formats. Finally, I had a lot of fun playing with the various effects available.
Overall, the MacPac is very nice. And I recommend it to you. As a plus, at such a low price, this collection of five programs is well worth the list price.

Macware MacFreelance Review

Macware MacFreelance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MacFreelance bills itself as 'Invoice and billing software made for Creative Professionals'. Having recently taken on a consulting job, I thought this might just be the software to make things in my life a bit simpler. I don't have any experience with other hour-tracking/billing software on the Mac, so
In the box, you'll receive a CD and a brief, ten-page Quick Reference Guide. Installation of the software is simple and on par with most any other program - open the disc, drag the program to your applications folder. Simple and easy.
Once you open the program, you're presented with the main window of the program, which presents a series of icons along the top edge and shows you clients, projects and ongoing charges tied to those projects. The first thing you'll want to do is set up your business. You can do business and send bills out as John Q. Public, as CreativePublic LLC, or under whatever name suits. You can enter multiple businesses for various project or clients with ease. Importing from the Address Book is also possible.
After getting whom you'll be billing as sorted out, you can now move onto adding clients. You can accomplish this by either double-clicking in the 'Clients' field, clicking on the Clients icon along the top bar, or through the menu system. While there are a variety of ways to accomplish this task, I found this to be somewhat cumbersome: double-clicking in the clients field isn't mentioned anywhere, and I stumbled on it by chance; the clients icon in the top bar is grayed out at various times for reasons not immediately apparent. That said, once you have the clients window up, it is simple to add clients, either manually or from the Address Book. You can also configure how invoicing is handled and which company or companies you use to bill the client.
Setting up projects is simpler and more straight forward than the troubles I encountered with clients, though not without some quirks. To add a new project, simply click the '+' button below the Projects field. You can title the project and enter any additional information in the tab below, who will bill the project, whether to produce a quote, tax information, mileage, discounts and add any dates to the calendar in iCal. Adding various Timed Items or Fixed (rate) Items is straight forward. The program does not allow you to add new items when you've got the clock running, as you wouldn't want to be billing for administrative activities, now, would you?
Once you're set up, you can start working. MacFreelance puts a small icon in the upper right-hand menu-bar icons where you can start and stop time-tracking for any hourly projects you've set up. You can also bring up a larger Task Monitor window to keep track of information. Finally, you can also start and stop timing from the main program window.
Once you've finished a project, or at least come to the point where you need to create an invoice, MacFreelance provides a variety of options. You can customize your invoice header and information through the program preferences. With your invoice preview created, you can easily print or email it out. MacFreelance also has an invoice book which allows you to keep track of the outstanding bills, advances, paid bills, and any other tracking information you might need. The main window in the program also has a Statistics tab which gives a variety of time worked, billed, paid and other information in concise form.
Mileage tracking, which is a must for some projects, is also available. This feature is initially disabled and must be turned on in the preferences. You can track either through the entry of actual mileage or odometer readings. Entering miles traveled was simple, though I could not figure out how to enter the odometer readings into the program, and the help function was of little help, other than to let me know the feature was there and how to enable it.
Generally, I found the software to be adequate. MacFreelance integrates with a number of other applications seamlessly, which makes for simple billing and calendaring. The program itself has some frustrating user interface inconsistencies which keep it from achieving its full potential. Additionally, the help features are relatively thin and not completely up to speed with current version of MacFreelance. With some time to gain familiarity, MacFreelance will enable you to easily take care of invoice and billing tasks, but some of the features are not intuitive. With a few changes, I feel MacFreelance could go from adequate to quite good.

Bento 3 Review

Bento 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a Bento user since 2.0, and I'm reasonably experienced in database. I also use Filemaker Pro 10.
In short, Bento 3 is very useful for personal users, for purposes it is advertised, but I would not expect much more from Bento. Bento 3 is also not much more than Bento2 engine with new cosmetic features. It is no Filemaker. It is very useful when you want to extend or add function to Addressbook, Todo list, calendar, etc., or make your own task manager. In other words, Bento can serve very well as a highly customizable personal information management (PIM) or digital organizer system based on simple databases. Its main weakness are limited relational functions, limited to one table per "library" (databse), and lack of embedded browser interface. Also, "media" field and URL list field of Bento databases are not exportable or importable through CSV files. They are retained within local Bento database files, and they can't be exchanged with other apps in any standard way (unless you are familiar with SQLite database engine, used by Bento. You could access these files directly, if so desired.).
There are many annoying inconveniences in terms of features and user interfaces. I'm actively filing suggestions though their website, so I am strongly hoping that they will release new version soon to fix these problems, but so far I didn't get any luck. I will revise this review and potentially raise the star rating when I see this happening (by the way, I gave 3 stars to Bento 2).
Compared to Filemaker, Bento is a lot easier to use, and much more like Mac software, while Filemaker has more awkward user interface as a Mac application. When creating a simple database, Bento requires a lot less initial work than Filemaker, and the screen layout looks much nicer. Fast, easy, convenient, streamlined are the strengths of Bento over Filemaker.
Bento also has star-rating element, and a few other convenient features that Filemaker lacks. It seems to me that Filemaker avoided these useful features from Filemaker Pro 10 to distance itself from Bento. (I personally want Filemaker Pro 10 to be a superset of Bento, so that I don't have to switch apps to manage personal records, and research data sets, business data and others.)
On the other hand, Filemaker is much more powerful when it comes to relational functions, elements available to user interface. For example, Filemaker can have a web browser (which can also display PDF documents or local files) embedded as an element of user interface within the Filemaker window, which I find very convenient. When the database is large (say more than 10000 records), Filemaker is considerably faster when running search, etc. This is to be expected, since Bento is based on SQLite engine, while Filemaker Pro uses more powerful database engine.
I bought both Bento and Filemaker Pro 10 myself, out of my personal funds. That should tell you that I find both apps are useful for different purposes, and they are different enough. This much is true. What I am not happy is why they did not make Filemaker Pro 10 to have some of the cool features of Bento to make it more useful for quick applications by power users. If you are a Filemaker user, you may find the same bitterness when you decide to shell out for Bento.
I use Bento among my MacPro, Macbook and iMac, synchronized via a pocket hard drive (iMac and Macbook) and/or intranet (MacBook), using MacPro as the base machine. I do this by syncing Bento database folder, Addressbook folder and iCal folder using a free software called unison. It is essential that all three of these databases are synchronized concurrently on all machines, or the references from Bento to the other Mac apps will be broken. If you routinely use multiple computers, Unison is a very worthwhile software to familiarize yourself with, although it is a Unix-originated free software and there is some unfriendliness to it.
