It is now only available in the Visio version through an MSDN Subscription - expensive and unreasonable for individual purchasers. Buyer beware....if you want database management functionality get something else.

QuickBooks: Customer Manager - New Version Review

(More customer reviews)I have used ACT! and Qbooks for years. I needed an upgrade to ACT! but received very poor reviews for ACT! 6.0. Intuit always gives a quality product so I bought This Customer Manager.
The advertising makes it sound so powerful but I cannot find much to do with it. It is like Intuit sold a shell they were developing to recapture development costs.
Its kind of funny in a sick sort of way .. but I can't find much functionality in this product at all. It really doesn't do anything except list your customers and... nothing!

Prophet 3.0 - 3 Pack Review

(More customer reviews)I have purchased the Prophet Pro 4.0 version for $199.95 from the vendor and straight out of the gate the installation was fraught with bugs and problems. I had to first tweak the registry with a patch to get the software to even begin the install, I then had to download a file from Micrososft "Windows Installer Distributable 3.1" to get the software to install on the machine. After the installation according to the users guide when I start Outlook I was to be asked questions regarding the configuration and what files to use and where to install which never happened. After this it was no suprise to find that no component of the application was present at all within Outlook. I uninstalled the software and went through the process again and finally got it to run only to find that some of the toolbars did not work when pressed and that when I wanted to backup my DB to my network drive it would not do it because you have to backup locally and manually copy it to the server for safekeeping. To make this even worse, if that was possible, Avidian does not provide patches, updates or fixes on their website like most NORMAL developers do, you have to pay a seperate fee for that bit of heaven. When asked why this was not included in the purchase price I was told that their oversees customers dont require patches or fixes, which makes you wonder what the heck those people are doing over there. In short the only good thing about this product is the money back guarantee which I am going to fully avail myself of. If you are looking for a good CRM product look at Maximizer, I think that will be the route I am going to pursue.
PS... Avidian people dont seem to give a hang whether or not you are happy with their product or service, maybe they will start if more of us who buy the product and return it spread the word a bit.
PSS... Too bad I cant choose a number of stars lower than 1, 1 seems to good for them.

I've since switched to PCs, and FileMaker Pro is now its own company. But the quality of the software remains excellent, the upgrades are always worthwhile, and this is still the most user-friendly database I've ever used.
Especially if you're an Access user (which is impossible software!), you will love the ease and versatility of this program.

GoldMine Standard 6.7 Review

(More customer reviews)I have used Goldmine for five years and find it to be invaluable for managing contacts and projects for my consulting business.
Best Features:
#1) Organization Charts can be created that can include other organizations as a subset. This is the feature that I utilize the most and don't know of any other product that has this capability. To manage projects, I include vendors that I have contacted under the client organization chart that they support, yet can tie them to other clients as well and maintain their own independent org charts.
#2) All phone calls are logged under my contacts as are emails. You can file relevant documents such as Word and Excel documents under a contact also but this is not a feature that I make use of.
#3) There is sales forecasting feature that I've worked with that is another important capabiity but I'm not taking full advantage of that yet.
Other Comments:
Another reveiwer found the syncronization and learning curve to be a problem. I was syncing Goldmine with my Palm Pilot and it was a two step process - first syncing to Outlook and then another step to sync to the Palm. I have stopped using this feature as I'm generally in the field and didn't have the cradle available for the Palm. I'm looking at using a smartphone as my PDA that has a USB connection, so I expect to go back to syncing. The two-step process is inconvenient but like other workarounds with technology, I've gotten use to it. Goldmine definitely has a learning curve but there are a lot of features and is a very powerful program, so I expect that.
Tip:
I recently started to keep four quadrants open in the program at all times: 1) Contact Records, 2) Calendar, 3) Contact Search Center, and 4) E-mail Center. I read about this technique and it greatly speeds up my use of the application.
Things Goldmine Could Do Better:
#1) I would like to see a To Do List similar to Franklin Planner method whereby you could assign priorities along with the suspense date that you want them to show up on instead showing future items before they are needed.
#2) Have a more flexible method of showing more phone numbers under a contact - I have contacts with multiple work numbers (as they work at multiple locations), two cell phones (work and personal), home phone, fax numbers (work and home)and the list goes on. As I recall, ACT does a better job at handling this issue but I find Goldmine's other features to offset this.
I totally depend on this program to manage my contacts and feel that it is an ideal program for small businesses. While it isn't perfect, I can recommend that you seriously consider it. I give it four stars as while it is quite robust - it can benefit from further improvement.

(More customer reviews)Bento is a smart, convenient database for the non-power user. Within its limitations it's excellent, interacting automatically with other apps (like iCal and Address Book) on the Mac. It also simplifies database use in general for those of us intimidated by full FileMaker.
Unfortunately, it lacks some capabilities a lot of ordinary Mac users will want - primarily the ability to sync data among multiple Macs. If you keep Bento on your desktop you can't readily sync its data to the same app on your laptop, or vice versa. Makes it tough for use in a mixed environment.
Online discussions have highlighted this shortcoming, and we can hope the first revision will overcome this limitation. Meanwhile, if you do all your computing/database use on a single machine, Bento's fine.

I am familiar with designing a basic database, and was able to do so right away. However there are options that will keep me learning for many months ahead. ACT 6.0 - 5 User Review

(More customer reviews)I've been a faithful user of ACT since 1998. I've always found it intutive and an absolute must for my sales activities. I've been such a big proponent of ACT that I often recommend it during my company's sales consulting practice. I've attended several one day training courses from ACT approved training centers to improve my operating of the software.
I've always upgraded shortly after ACT has brought a new version to market. The changes have always been minimal, but you could always see the improvements from one version to the other and they always made sense. The improvements have made ACT easier to use and much easier to use with Outlook.
I decided to do the trial version of the newest ACT to see how I would like it......and I didn't.
What a disaster. The only positive point was that I kept my ACT 2004 as a seperate program and am I glad I did.
The new version of Act was slow, clunky, very unintutitive and hard to operate. I lost all ability to synch with Outlook. It is a disaster. I hope ACT will improve the system before jaming a new one down our throats. I bet I get an email once a week urging me to upgrade and how the price will go up if I don't. After the trial session I wouldn't upgrade if they gave it to me.
Stick with your older version of ACT until they get the major problems with the new version repaired.
Shame on you ACT for bringing a product to market that is vastly inferior to your older versions.

FileMaker Pro 10 Review

(More customer reviews)I've used Filemaker since it's been black and white on a Mac Classic. From version to version it has always upgraded my files and performed flawlessly. At FM 6 I migrated over to Windows and the migration of my relational database was virtually flawless -just a little tweaking of layout and fonts.
It has always been very easy to use -I have built entire applications for my personal use and it's always trouble free and fast. It is crazy simple to customize.
I stopped at FM 6 for a while because FM 7 switched to a new database model, more in line with other databases like MySQL. Finally this year I switched to FM 10. I did need to redo my databases into tables and used it as an opportunity to clean out the unused stuff I'd added and then stopped using over 15 years -but I was surprised that it was way easier to migrate than I expected.
FM10 also has a nifty function where, as I update my FM records locally on my computer, it updates the MySQL database where my website is hosted. I enter new products and my website, running off MySQL and PHP is instantly updated!
FM is stable as all get out. My Macs didn't crash but of course my PCs do. When that happens FM will sometimes say it needs to "rebuild the database" -it has NEVER failed to do so. I have never lost data. Also, they don't release until it's right. Windows seems to be in perpetual Beta mode and you get to be the tester but through many upgrades, Filemaker is never half baked -new versions always run well and I'm not on tech support bringing up bugs they didn't catch.
Filemaker has a good deal of power for the power user, but FM has also been the database of choice for people who have no database experience. I started as a newbie many many years ago, found it easy to learn (once I understood the idea of a relational database) and I still love it! When a company does a good job of something I think it's very important to say so (cause usually I'm bitchin'.)

Membership Plus 2005 Deluxe Review

(More customer reviews)Our church recently purchased this software to manage our church membership data and contribution data. We have been VERY disappointed with this product.
Several of the features promised do not function at all. The custom filter features do not work at all - you cannot print a report of just your "members" for example, or find all couples with children.
Attempting to export data or print reports is a hit or miss proposition. Sometimes the program will respond to the options you have selected, sometimes it seems to ignore the selected options and do totally its own thing. Sometimes it doesn't give you any of your data at all.
The features that do "work" are so full of errors and bugs that it makes it a challenge to work with, much less a program I trust to safely store all of the data we want to enter into it. We have consistently encountered "bugs" both large and small. Dialog boxes that do not work. Check boxes that do not appear when checked. "Address violation" errors that freeze the program and require a computer restart, loosing any recently entered data.
This program contains a "Contributions at Home" portion that allows a financial secretary to enter the data from their home computer and then update the main database. This section of the program does not reliably save the data entered, and to give you an idea, it creates a fatal error anytime you open the "funds" section of this module (A crucial part of this "convenient" feature).
We have found that while some of the program does work it is not enough to offset the frustration of the things that do not work. In addition to the frustrations of the program itself, the Customer Service and support has been minimally helpful at best. I am a computer literate indiviaul, these errors and problems are NOT simply operator error or lack of understanding.
If the program actually, successfully executed all of the features it tries to offer it would be a great program. However, until this company learns to create software that is functional, I would strongly recommend that you AVOID THIS PROGRAM. It does not come even CLOSE to doing what it says it does.

A friend of mine recommended Customer Appointment Manager, so I tried it out. IT IS SOOOO EASY TO USE. And if I can use it, anybody can. I am much more organized now and quickly check past appointments, schedule future appointments, or create recurring appointments. GREAT PRODUCT!

Simple things such as e-mailing multiple contacts at one time are now seemingly impossible, though easily accomplished in earlier versions. Bugs galore and by the way, these are new bugs overwriting tried and true software. But then again, I guess that helps support the $45 charge per tech support call. Note - you cannot e-mail tech support from the Multisoft website... hmmmmm.
I removed 6.0 and reloaded 5.0 so that I can get some work done... still waiting to get my money back.
BTW - I still have my copies of 1.0, 1.2, 3.0, 97is & 5.0

Filemaker Pro 11 Review

(More customer reviews)I am the Senior FileMaker Pro Developer at a major American university/medical school, where we have integrated FileMaker Pro and Oracle-based products to manage the vast amounts of clinical data collected for our cancer research center. We've recently started testing FileMaker Pro 11 in our environment, and have so far been very impressed with the new features and enhancements I've encountered.
Here are a few notable things I've encountered:
CHARTING
This long-overdue feature alone justifies the upgrade price! In the past, creating a simple chart in FileMaker Pro has been a complex process involving byzantine workarounds and/or expensive plug-ins or services. Now you can create dynamic charts which key off table data, found-set data, or related data. The new feature supports bar, line, area, and pie charts. I looking forward to seeing more chart types in future releases.
SUMMARIZED DATA ON TABLE LAYOUTS
This feature greatly increases the usability of the table view in FileMaker Pro, and reduces the need for my Excel-savvy users to export the data for further analysis.
RECURRING IMPORT
This feature creates a dynamic link between an existing Excel spreadsheet and a FileMaker Pro file. This is great in an environment like ours where many different data platforms (including Excel) must be supported. With this feature, I can allow an Excel spreadsheet to be the primary repository of a given chunk of data, but still use a FileMaker Pro solution for analysis and reporting. This gives us more flexibility to offer multi-platform solutions to complex workflows.
THE INSPECTOR
The old "Object Info" palette has been greatly extended as a full-blown "Inspector", where all aspects of an object such as position, text & data formatting, field behavior attributes, etc. can be managed. Multiple inspectors can be open, which makes creating layouts a lot more efficient.
ENHANCED OBJECT BADGES
"Object Badges" are visual hints which appear in layout mode which advise the developer about how that object is formatted. This feature has been implemented before with badges for tooltips and script triggers, but has now been extended to show fields with conditional formatting and indexing for the new "Quick Find" feature.
QUICK FIND
This new feature allows the user to search for a particular value across all fields in the layout at once. I don't know how many times I've created this feature in my own solutions, but it was always a hassle and never as elegant or fast as Quick Find. Now I can include this feature in every solution without any any additional effort.
ENHANCED CUSTOM MENU CREATION
A long-awaited re-write of the Custom Menu tool (in FileMaker Pro Advanced) makes the process a lot simpler and intuitive. Finally!
IN-CONTEXT OBJECT CREATION
I've discovered many places in the interface where I can instantly create new objects such as fields, scripts, etc. in the context of what I'm doing. For example, I can invoke a "create script" window directly from within the "Custom Menu" window if I wish to attach a script (which I hadn't previously defined) to a menu item. Another example is the ability to create a new field when defining a table layout without needing to invoke the "Manage Database" window. There are more examples of this "in-context" integration, but the net effect is that I spend less time invoking windows and more time focused on the task at hand. It's a small thing which makes a big difference to a developer.
COPY / PASTE / IMPORT CUSTOM FUNCTIONS
A huge time-saver for developers. Now I can simply keep all my custom functions in a reference file, and move only the ones I want into any given solution.

I'm still discovering all the new features of FileMaker Pro 11, but as a 20-year FileMaker Pro developer, I can tell you the upgrade price is more than justified - it's a no-brainer. For companies, institutions, and casual users who are considering FileMaker Pro as a new platform, there has never been a better time to jump on the bandwagon - you won't regret it!

I faced a lot of challenges and many times thought FileMaker just wasn't capable of doing what I wanted to do. However, in most cases, I was able to find a way to accomplish my goals. The FileMaker on-line community is robust and helpful. I'll never go back to Access.

My only disappointment is that I had hoped to be able to sync with iPad Filemaker Go, but can't. I can add records on the iPad, then replace the file on my iMac with the iPad file, but they don't sync.
