Conquest: Frontier Wars Review

After the magnificence that was Starcraft, few good original RTS games have been released, most simply clones of that game, or the one other original and highly entertaining recent RTS, Commnand & Conquer: Red Alert 2. Both these games revolutionized RTS, but all others are bland copies in comparision. Then came Conquest: Frontier Wars (C:FW). This game is GREAT! What makes the game great? More than just having a variety of units, you'll actually USE most of these units. The new sector system is revolutionary! And the supply system brings in a whole new strategic element which must be taken into account.
1.Finally, a game where you need to build more than just 2 types of units!! Most RTSs are a simple race to get to the top of the research tree, then begin building the most powerful units before your opponent can build them. Not this game. Your fleets must be varied, or you'll see that wonderful fleet of nothing but Dreadnaughts massacred by a more varied fleet of Lancer Frigates, Battleships, Fleet Carriers, and Dreadnaughts. Keep your fleets varied!
2.This is how space battle should be! Not contrained by one map, but each battle can have up to 16 maps playable at the same time. Nothing beats using one fleet to attack one map, just to distract the opponent long enough to use the brunt of your forces on another sector which is your true target. The wormhole and sector system is intuitive and easy to use, and a great addition to the RTS genre.
3. In a real war, your unit would not have an infinite amount of bullets to fire. You would have to keep your units in supply, and C:FW manages to bring this reality to war, yet keeps it from being overwhelming. You simply keep your ships in the supply range of supply platforms in systems you own, and they stay in supply. When you begin an attack on a neighboring system, you must have built supply ships that will keep your units supplied until you can get a supply platform built in there. Of course, knowing this, your opponent will attack and destroy these ships first, hoping you run out of supplies. The strategic possibilites are endless! My only qualm about this is sometimes the action must be halted until you can replace supplyships which have been destroyed, or wait until your supply depot is built in order to advance. But this problem is minor, and won't deter you from playing.
I just wish all RTSs were this original and this much fun. This is a must buy!

Superb graphics. Clean AI. Truly exciting battles. Creative strategies. And, i had no problem with this on my own system. I even have windows xp and i got this to run very easily. Don't knock this game because some guy knows so little about his own computer that instead of trouble-shooting, he goes out and gets another one and even IT wont run the program. I thik this game was and still is underrated. Massive levels with a pretty cool multiplayer setup (8 players on my lan!) The background (space, mostly) is BEAUTIFUL. Runs on a moderate system. Athlon 900 / 1 gig ram(pc 133)/ geforce 4 4800 (128 ddr) / soundblaster audigy 2 / 12x dvd+rw drive / 24x cd-rom drive There is a little rough language, which is where the fifth star went. There's little need for that in a great game like this. It takes away from it, really. It just feels forced.

Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord Review

Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord

I was going to write a lot more about this game, but all I can say is that it's excellent, as are are the titles in this series. It's not going to be a game for everyone - it takes some patience and a lot of thought to make the outcome work for you. It's not an arcade game by any means. There is a lot of detail where it counts. The human figures are very simplistic as they're meant to be representations of an entire squad and not screen actors. The tank/vehicle/artillery textures are nicely done to make up for this.
If you don't know how to best utilize your troops and weapons, this will be a way to learn. The AI is pretty sharp once you understand the Human limitations it's governed by - ie line of sight and sound detection, etc. If the enemy doesn't attack you at a point on the map, that's not an AI glitch, that's a tactical advantage. You found a breech in the enemy defenses. Hurry, before they find out. Divide and conquer works here too.
In most scenarios, there's a lot of trees and buildings blocking the view of both sides, as well as the formation of the landscape - exploit these. Think like a Commander of troops, because that's what you're playing at. You really can't afford too many losses, and you will suffer too many if you make poor decisions in your Strategy and Tactics. This game is based heavily on Historic reality not Hollywood's - indeed, it's intended to be as realistic as possible minus the gore and physical pain. Most scenarios are recreations of real engagements, and if you play them as-is, you will have the same limitations that the soldiers had that day - low ammo, fatigue, morale issues, weakened units, etc. Other scenarios are admitted to be fictive.
Give it a go. At these prices you shouldn't be disappointed. It really is a good game - all 3 of them! These are the kinds of games I only dreamed about back in the 80s when the state-of-the-art was an Apple IIe and the first Castle Wolfenstein. We've come a long way from ASCII. And computer games have finally caught up with my imagination. I'm like a kid in candy shop right now.

Gary Grigsby's World At War Review

Gary Grigsby's World At War

You basically cannot go wrong with a Gary Grisby game, but I want to quickly assure those of you who shy away from his "monster" games, like War in the Pacific, that World at War was not designed only for the die hard wargaming grog....World at War will appeal to all gamers for its' relatively ease of play and respect for the historical period. Once you navigate the slightly steep learning curve, you will quickly become comfortable with the gameplay, and realize that many of the rules are intuitive.
One of the problems with buying many games is that after playing around with them for a week or two, you find it sitting on your hard drive, unplayed, to the point that WINDOWS tells you that you have unused desktop icons which can be deleted. This will not be the case with Gary Grisby's World at War. The replayability of this game is very high for the following reasons:
1. You have 5 different sides you can play v. the AI. You can play either Germany, Japan, Russia, The Western Allies, or China. Feeling adventurous? Then play more than one country such as Germany and Japan and see if your strategy for both nations can change the course of history. Want to learn the game mechanics better before playing the Western Allies? Then control China and see if you can withstand the Japanese invasion.
2.The game has 5 default difficulty settings. Winning as the Western Allies at the normal setting? Then crank it up a notch and see the strategies you employed previously crumble to dust as the AI is not only tougher during combat, but new strategies conducted by the AI are opened up as well.
3. Customizing the game is easy to do which will once again increase the difficulty. Just one example: you can increase your enemies supplies and transport abilities or conversely, deny your AI allied partners the same...either way, an entirely new game will result from these changes....these are only 2 of many adjustments you can make to increase your enjoyment when playing World at War.
4. The game supports PBEM play which will result in countless hours/days/months of play with your friends.
World at War is a turn based game, not real time, thus allowing you to pace the turns at your comfort level. The manufacturing and research aspects of the game are handled very cleanly and will not boggle you mind what to do next. The combat system is easy to comprehend and you will quickly understand why a particular attack of yours fell apart. The supply system of the game can be set at no supplies (recommended for beginners and the first game only), standard (where supplies you build for your forces are simply drawn from a common supply pool) or advanced (where you are responsible to create supply chains and physically have supplies present with your forces). These various supply rules illustrates the depth of the game. Finally, you can complete a game in one 4 to 6 hour gaming session.
Gary Grisby's World at War is a breath of fresh air in the stale world of WWII strategy games. Enthusiastically recommended!
