Journeyman Project Trilogy Review

Journeyman Project Trilogy
Average Reviews:

The Journeyman Project Games are the best surrealistic, problem solving games in existence, even though i didn't buy this bundled package, i got the original and Buried In Time as a bundled package years ago, i later bought Legacy of Time, the third chapter to this illustrious saga. These games are challenging, the graphics are beautiful, they may not be fast paced, but they give great fun to the sci fi fans, all of my friends love these games and I certainly do and always will.

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Review

Microsoft FrontPage 2000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
FrontPage 2000 is, like much of Microsoft Office 2000, very little improvement over its predecessors.
I eat, breath and sleep Web design and site management. Since 1994 I have searched high and low for a Web page editor that would provide the same kind of control and ease-of-use that I had come to expect from page layout programs like Quark XPress and PageMaker. I tried them all: PageMill, NetObjects Fusion, AOLPress, and then FrontPage. While better than what had come before, FrontPage has always had one overwhelming shortcoming: it is inexorably linked to other Microsoft software, particularly the IIS Web server and Internet Explorer.
I am not a Microsoft-hater; I use IE5 everyday and think it to be a very good browser. And I used FP98 for a number of sites in the past. However, the many problems raised by other reviewers are legitimate
- HTML "Correction" - All versions of FP give the author access to the underlying HTML code, but not complete control over it. If there was only one right way to do something in HTML, that wouldn't be a problem, but with three or four ways to centre something, how can FP know which one is correct? An HTML editor should give the user complete control over all code. Pointing out errors is fine, but correcting them without asking is not.
- Server-side extensions - While FP offers some cool stuff like a guestbook, what isn't made clear to the novice user is that you will need to have FrontPage extensions installed on your hosting server in order for the gizmos to work. A lot of ISPs don't want to do this, which is understandable when CGI scripts can accomplish the same functions with less hassles.
- Bad HTML Code - Like most Web editors that have come before it, FP2K produces bloated HTML.
- IE-specific JavaScript and DHTML - The first time I tried to slam out a page in FP2K, this problem bit me. JavaScript is a problematic thing: different Web browsers interpret it differently. It is important to use code that will be understood equally well by IE and Netscape. With FP2K, forget it. Some JavaScript and DHTML effects are cross-browser, but many are not, and the interface doesn't tell us which is which.
FrontPage 2000 is not a professional Web designer's tool. For them, there is Macromedia Dreamweaver, and text editors like Allaire Homesite and HotMetal. And FP2K isn't a tool for people just starting out, because they won't know how limiting the software really is until it is too late. For them, I recommend a good free WYSIWYG editor such as Netscape Composer or Namo WebEditor, and some books on HTML.
The bottom line? Take a serious look around before purchasing FrontPage 2000.

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 makes FrontPage-based Web creation as easy as creating a new folder on your hard drive. With many Web servers, you have one Web site, but with FrontPage, you can create as many Webs as you want, including nested Webs. A FrontPage-based Web consists of three layers of Web structure, folder structure, and navigation structure. Click one of the links below to select a specific topic. You can use Dynamic HTML to animate, use Cascading Style Sheets 2.0 to wrap or layer text and images, and find just the colors you want with enhanced color tools. The program fixes hyper-links when files are renamed or moved, and 13 new management reports summarize the status of a site at a glance. FrontPage shares toolbars, menus, themes, background spell checking, and Format Painter with Microsoft Office.
In-box upgrade good ONLY for those who own one of the following Microsoft products: Microsoft Office, Professional, Standard, Small Business Edition, Developer, or VAR edition version 4 or later; Microsoft Word version 6 or later; Microsoft Excel version 5 or later; Microsoft PowerPoint version 4 or later; Microsoft Access version 2 or later; Microsoft Visual FoxPro version 3 or later; Microsoft Publisher 97 or later; Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000 or later; or Microsoft Project version 4 or later for MS-DOS, Windows, and Windows NT Workstation.

I.G.I. 2 Covert Strike Review

I.G.I. 2 Covert Strike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was actually looking forward to this stinker, but after purchasing it I came to realize that it was plagued by stability problems and it was simply no fun to play. The **most** frustrating problem is the utter lack of aiming accuracy when your character is inside a building. Try to aim for a headshot and your mouse pointer just... never... quite... goes where you want to aim. A close second on the irritation scale is the fact that enemy units can snipe you from 200 yards away with machine pistols -- yep, I'm not joking. Finally, IGI2 simply offers nothing new -- in fact, it feels as though the Innerloop developers were following some sort of first person shooter development handbook. For example, wherever there's a camera, there's a box to hide behind; wherever there's a guard, you can be sure there's a good 10 second interval where his back is to you. The original IGI (although sometimes incredibly frustrating) was actually quite fun -- it improved with replay. But, this sequel makes you wonder what the developers were thinking. In fact, I can't finish this game... When a game begins to feel like work it's time to cut your losses. I play a *lot* of videogames and I suggest you take your money and your valuable time elsewhere. I would suggest purchasing either Splinter Cell or No One Lives Forever 2 as an alternative to this waste of packaging material.

Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Upgrade Review

Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The beta version arrived at my house, was installed, and had lots of bells and whistles. Fancy colors, buttons, etc. However, I am not sure that the changes are worth the kind of cash proposed by Microsoft's suggested retail price. Word, Access and Excel are basically the same programs as XP, Powerpoint has a few nicer features (it always has had nice features), and Outlook does have some data management not previously available. As a small business operator, I have found it much easier to track business contacts, emails, etc. I also have a FrontPage designed website. The new FrontPage has a nifty "split" screen which allows you to look at your HTML coding along with the actual published page, both at the same time. The new FrontPage also makes general HTML tagging, coding, and changing much more user friendly. However, it suffers from the traditional Microsoft misery; namely, the online help is virtually useless. This is also true for Publisher. You will spend lots of frustrating moments with both of those programs.

Microsoft Project 2003 Standard Upgrade Review

Microsoft Project 2003 Standard Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This upgrade is worth its price.
Used in conjunction with Project Server and Project Professional 2003 the program now allows project tasks to appear in Outlook calendars and messaging. As a project manager, I find this feature eases communications with team members and fosters greater team participation.
This ease of communication saves time and money. If you have doubts over this upgrade, my unequivocal recommendation is to proceed. The software's tight integration with other Microsoft Office Products, including Outlook, enables you to focus on project goals, not the technology that supports them.

Quicken 2005 Basic Review

Quicken 2005 Basic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just laid out $30 for Quicken 2005, thinking it would be a great replacement for ACE-Money which I was using for my checking account. What a mistake. This year they changed their program so you can no longer import data from your old programs or your banks using .qif (Quicken Interchange Format)
This makes the program useless, since you can't bring your old data into it from another program or from banks which permit exports of your bank account data using .qif files.
Navigating the Quicken tech support page is worse than navigating a mine field. There are no phone number listings and no real help in how to adapt their new 2005 version to older programs by letting you import .qif files into your checking account.
If you are enamoured of Quicken, stick with version 2004 or older. The upgrade to 2005 is a catastrophe.

Roboform Password Manager & Form Filler Review

Roboform Password Manager and Form Filler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems like you have to have passwords for everything these days and more and more often there are increasingly unique requirements for the passwords ... case senstive, number of characters, special characters required vs. not allowed. How all the sites, companies and such expect us mere mortals to remember all these passwords is beyond me. After takign on a new work role and being inundated with literally a dozen or more new requirements for passwords, I decided that I had to find some help. I reviewed a variety of professional and user reviews of different software applications and eventually settled on Roboform and am glad that I did.
I had used FireFox's password manager and liked it but it only worked with Firefox and some of the sites I use had to be used with Internet Explorer. RoboForm works with both. Plus, you can go in and actually see the unencrypted passwords, print out the password, create a profile for completing on-line forms and much more. It was easy to install and set up ... very intuitive. They have a demo that you can run through quickly upon set up which gives you the basic how-to's and from there I was able to do everything I needed. It remembers the passwords and other logon info when you enter it the first time ... and then populates it at the click of a button the next time you're there. It'll also populate forms and such. I like that it only populates these fields when you click the button to tell it to ... as oppose to automatically doing it (since there's times that you don't want it to auto-complete forms and such).
The real test was when my computer started to die and I had to re-install on a new laptop. I figured that I was safe because I could print out my passwords and would just have to re-enter again the first time. But, instead, I was able to copy over the password file to the new computer and pick right up where I was without having to re-enter any passwords.
I give roboform high marks overall ... it's certainly made my password management a lot easier! Highly recommend Roboform.

Microsoft Money Plus Premium Review

Microsoft Money Plus Premium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using MS Money for several years now and it has been a good experience. The improvements from year to year are modest. There are still reasons to upgrade though. First, each version of Money is only good for two years of online services. These services include price quotes for stocks and mutual funds, banking services, and so forth. Second, if you upgrade only once in many years, then the program might have trouble performing the update for you. It has to convert your computer file of financial history to a new format (it changes every year).
I have started a discussion topic "How to enjoy Microsoft Money" that is visible on the product page. This topic explains how I have avoided serious problems using Money.
The most significant competitor to Money is Intuit Quicken. Both programs are good. Recent versions of Quicken became increasingly restrictive about exporting data from the program. That is what prompted me to switch to Money.

Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 Review

Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm waiting for the day when software becomes more expensive than the actual hardware to run it (it should happen soon, considering the trend in computer prices these days, right??). In the meantime, I'm happy that Microsoft at least offers a lower-priced version of their software for those pursuing academic endeavors.
The Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 is basically identical to their standard Microsoft Office 2003. It contains:
- Excel 2003
- Outlook 2003
- Powerpoint 2003
- Word 2003
What it does NOT contain (compared with the professional and small business versions) is Access 2003, Publisher 2003 and the Outlook 2003 version that has a Business Contact Manager - none of which would be particularly necessary for students.
Microsoft stresses that this version of their Office 2003 is only for non-commercial use. You qualify for this edition so long as you are 1) a full- or part-time student enrolled in a K-12 institution, 2) home-schooled, 3) taking at least 6 credits at an accredited college/university, or 4) a full- or part-time faculty member and work 20+ hours at a school.
It retails at the amazon price, which seems like a lot until you remember that the Standard version is sold for over two hundred dollars more. There is no discounted upgrade price for the academic version, but this is still probably the best price you can get. AND you can use the software on up to three computers, so long as someone in your household qualifies (for instance, if you have a child who qualifies for this version, you can upload it onto your computer as well and use the software even if you do not qualify for the discount).
If you are a college/university student, I would suggest visiting your school bookstore before purchasing this software. Microsoft offers academic volume licensing through a lot of colleges/universities, where you can get the same software for up to 70% off if you qualify. Check out [microsoft website] for more information.
