Daycare Nightmare Review

Daycare Nightmare
Average Reviews:

This is a great time management style game with a clever twist that has penalties for not keeping up with the tasks the game sets for you - for instance if you don't change a vampire baby's diapers fast enough he will bite you which slows you down for a brief period of time, or if the ghost baby gets upset he scares all the other babies causing them to wet themselves (and of course you need to change all the diapers then). This twist adds a new dimension to managing your tasks as you not only have to consider what reward you might miss if you fail to keep up with the tasks at hand but also what penalty you will suffer as well.
The game seems to have a smooth difficulty ramp up (I'm only on level 20 so far) and for the most part is challenging enough without being too hard, though there was one level I lost several times before finally beating it :-)
So if you like fast paced games that challenge your ability to think quick and make fast decisions then this one is a definite buy.

Readiris Pro 11 Review

Readiris Pro 11
Average Reviews:

The good: works like it is supposed too! scans to pdf image over text which is allowing me to shift towards a paperless workspace.
The bad: you need to request an CD key over the internet for every time you have to reinstall - hard disk crash - or reinstall because the default installation is incomplete - or re install for a second or third language - install for a second computer at home.
The ugly: Not only will they not send me a CD key - they won't even answer my emails! - The link in the customer service section for support in North America is dead - check it yourself - 404 - and the first email is "We are sorry to hear that you are having problems with our software - please send us your machine ID." - So you send them the information and you don't get a reply. Now I have been ripped for 100$!
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Pocket Money 2.1 Review

Pocket Money 2.1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a HUGE fan of PocketMoney and have been for a year and half ever since I tried out the demo version. This simple little program is easy to use and will help you to keep your finances in line with minimal effort! I have tried Pocket Quicken as well and I'm happy to say that Pocket Money 2.1 is easier to use and more powerful (as well as less expensive!) than even Pocket Quicken. And as I mentioned in my title, this the only Palm app that I use on a daily basis..aside from the Datebook!
I use this in place of Quicken or MS Money. You heard me right...this little app is robust enough to be your stand alone financial software. Even better is that it's portable and does many of the things the desktop money managers do. Of course you can use it as a supplement for Quicken/MS Money as it does export QIF files, but on it's own, PM has the power and features to do everything you need.
Setting up accounts is easy as is doing the actual tracking of debits/credits and so on. You can set up recurring payments, regular deposits, and so on. You can set up which accounts are counted as part of your total net worth on the overview screen so that you always have a snapshot of just how much money you really have. The portability factor is great...stop at an ATM or purchase something and you can quickly record the transaction with a minimum of stylus taps and not have to worry about entering the receipts in your desktop PC when you get home.
The app is stable (never crashes), small in size (only a few hundred Kilobytes) and the password screen is a welcome basic safety feature. Plus, all your card info and bank contact data can safely be stored in this app in the event that you lose your wallet or need to call your bank!
If you buy just one Palm application or if you feel the need to organize your finances (and keep them organized), Pocket Money is a worthwhile purchase. I can't say enough about this great product!

RoboHelp Office X5 Review

RoboHelp Office X5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
ADDITION TO MY REVIEW: After updating an old Help project for a Java application, I learned that this version of RoboHelp automatically and without warning changes all map IDs to a different form than the older version, with NO provision in RoboHelp X5 for generating IDs in the old format. Solution: go in and manually change all the map IDs to the old format. This is INEXCUSABLE and makes upgrading from an old version of RoboHelp A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.
And get this: If you have two topic files with the same name IN DIFFERENT FOLDERS, the properties box for each file shows the map IDs for BOTH files, with no indication which ID is actually assigned to each file. Really helpful.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: There is very little that is "robo" (i.e., automated) about RoboHelp. Sure, it will auto-generate things when you ask it to, but its output is so erratic and incomplete you might as well do it all by hand.
As a manual Help creation tool, it's got a nice complement of features, but let me tell you about a couple of little quirks or bugs...
You're supposed to be able to switch the type of output you get from RoboHelp at any point in your project. We started out with the goal of producing WebHelp, then switched to MS HTML help. Well, the part where you define what's available in your final output (Window definitions) did not come along for the switch. It took some time to realize that we had to delete the window definitions and define new ones in order for RoboHelp to actually produce the output we wanted.
Another little quirk is that when you add a hyperlink to existing text in a bulleted list, RoboHelp throws in a bunch of space characters (from 3 to 10) between the bullet and the text. And the WYSIWYG editor is not really WYSIWYG, not that that's any surprise, but it won't allow you to do everything you want to do. There is a TrueCode editor to let you get around that, if you know your way around HTML.
A new quirk that I've been wrestling with this morning is that any edit to an existing topic changes the style for that topic, and RoboHelp will not allow me to change it back, even when I edit the HTML directly!
Workarounds, more workarounds, and living with things you can't work around--expect to spend a lot of time developing your project's Help file with RoboHelp.

macXware Mac Pac (Mac) Review

macXware Mac Pac (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This package caught my eye, much in the way the original iMacs, with their distinctive coloring captured my attention.
And in this manner, once I got into the application package itself, I was as pleased as I was with how the iMac was as much a integration of form and function.
The MacPac is described as "A Collection of Useful Applications for OS X". I'd agree. There are five programs contained within: FontManager; AppSwitch; RadicalSqueeze; MacCabinet; and, RadicalPhoto.
Initially, I pulled out the small user's manual and the CD-rom from the MacPac box. While I don't always read the manual before popping the CD-rom into my PowerBook, I stopped and perused the manual. In this case, I was very pleased by how "short and sweet" the user's manual is. Each application is listed one only one side of one page, per. Good enough, in my opinion. Each application's help and on-line help links are more than enough. I like the software developer's instinct that more would not have made the user's manual better.
My only real concern about this whole suite of programs -- at install, I would have liked to install all the programs at once! Unfortunately, each needs to be installed separately. This isn't a big deal, but a single install option would have improved my ability to get at "all" of the programs. So, I installed each application in the MacPac, and began to play.
FontManager is a nice way to review fonts, install them temporarily and/or permanently, and remove fonts as desired. While I don't generally do a lot with fonts (I have about five favorites), I appreciated the ability to look over the font TrueType formats. In general, I see this application as one I'd use only once in a great while, but when I do, its just the tool for the job.
AppSwitch is a handy way to have all open applications available in a drop down menu, from the toolbar. To a certain extent, this feature is redundant to the dock, and to the ability to "Apple-Tab" switch between open applications. But, I do find that this program might be useful if you find yourself switching between OS 9 and OS X. In this case, the AppSwitch is just familiar enough, and a fair trick. In this case, you might want to have AppSwitch open and running with log-on.
RadicalSqueeze is a quick and convenient way to compress stuff. Its options are to compress into either .zip or .tar format. Having played a little with unix in a previous life on a Sun workstation, I prefer the .tar format, but both seem to work satifactorily. This application is useful when sending files over email, or uploading files to an online directory. If you are using this program with any dial-up log-in, you will enjoy the time savings.
MacCabinet is one of those organization tools. I broke myself of keeping files on my desktop a good while ago. But, MacCabinet allows you to "pull" open a storage window (definable in the right or left side of your screen) and put/grab files from this location. Fairly simple to use, and another of those programs that, if you like it, you'd set it up to begin when you log-in. One quirk I noticed: when I started it initially, a message (which I probably misread) instructed me to go to the left side of the screen to "pull open" my cabinet window. But I found my cabinet opening on the right side of the screen. Not a real issue, because of the extremely simple way to customize the cabinet.
Finally, RadicalPhoto is one nice simple photo enhancement program. I have been using iPhoto predominately for most of my images, but sometimes, I'd like to use something a bit "more." While I have used Adobe's PhotoShop Elements, I prefer Radical Photo for both is simplicity and its price. Plus, I like the option of saving in a wide variety of formats. Finally, I had a lot of fun playing with the various effects available.
Overall, the MacPac is very nice. And I recommend it to you. As a plus, at such a low price, this collection of five programs is well worth the list price.

Fundamentals of Law Office Management Review

Fundamentals of Law Office Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I do like how the book is designed. Although there are a few websites that are no longer available at the time of publication, the drills and practice questions really maintain a real world feel. The CD is also helpful in printing out examples from the book.
The appendices are helpful as a study guide, summarizing answers to the drill questions at the end of each chapter. Also we follow the adventures of the law offices of Black, White & Green, LLP and what they go through in each chapter of the book.
Especially helpful was the section on calendaring, how filing systems work and when are we ever going to reach the level of the "paperless" office.
You have the law information, civil and criminal. You know how to write a pleading and to research the law. But many attorneys and secretaries just "wing it" when organizing a law office.
This book solves that problem and makes for better paralegals and secretaries.
The only bad point are the occasional spelling errors, but that's the publisher's fault. Recommended.

Fairy Godmother Tycoon Review

Fairy Godmother Tycoon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Fairy Godmother Tycoon" is the first "Tycoon" game I ever played, and because of how great it is I've become addicted to playing the whole Tycoon series!
In this game you've been hired by the Fairy Godmother to re-build her potions empire. Your goal is to increase sales & take business away from the competition, ultimately putting them out of business. You do this by:
*Checking the weather report daily, as this lets you know the percentage of the population that will need your potions that day.
*Ensuring that you purchase enough stock each day & that you've priced the potions appropriately - if you price them too high no one will buy, but if you set the price too low you won't make enough of a profit.
*Choosing how much to spend on marketing & research
*Paying attention to the sales reports to see how happy your customers are, the number of lost sales, & how you are doing in relation to the competition.
*And purchasing upgrades that will allow you to:
1. Help your store look better
2. Decrease the time it takes to make potions
3. Keep customers entertained while they're waiting
4. Increase wharehouse size
5. Put various spells on townspeople & competition
If you find that you need additional funds to get going, you can always visit the loanshark - but the interest rates are REALLY high!
You can also make additional cash by helping out various fairytale characters like the tortoise & the hare, the 3 bears, & Rapunzal in hysterical fairy-tale spin-offs/spoofs that pop up here & there.
It might sound complicated but its really not - a great tutorial is included that walks you through everything - in fact, it's one of the best tutorials I've seen.
Overall, this game is AWESOME! But be warned, it's HIGHLY addictive! I think it would be great for older kids as well as adults. I am 37 years old & couldn't get enough of it!
